Lightweight world titlist Terry Flanagan will defend his belt against Orlando Cruz in a late addition to promoter Frank Warrens card on Nov. 26 at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, Warren announced Thursday.Flanagan (31-0, 12 KOs), a 27-year-old southpaw from England, will make his fourth title defense and fight for the third time this year. He will be boxing in Cardiff for the second consecutive fight. He won a shutout decision against former junior lightweight world titlist Mzonke Fana on July 16 but was not pleased with his performance.Im excited to get out there again and put in a big performance before getting the blockbuster fights that Frank has promised me next year, Flanagan said. Last time I fought in Cardiff, I wasnt happy with how I boxed, so it will be good to show the Welsh fans that Im a lot better than I showed against Fana. Also a southpaw, Puerto Ricos Cruz (25-4-1, 13 KOs), 35, is boxings first openly gay fighter. He is moving up from the junior lightweight division less than two months after notching a seventh-round knockout of Gabino Cota on Oct. 7.The fight with Flanagan will be Cruzs second opportunity to win a world title. In 2013, Orlando Salido knocked him out in the seventh round in a vacant featherweight title fight in Las Vegas.Flanagan is hoping to win and move on to face bigger names next year.Franks delivered everything he promised. He got me a British title, a WBO European title and a WBO world title, Flanagan said. I got the opportunity to defend it in my own town [Manchester] and then defend it in someone elses backyard. I know Im the best lightweight in the division, and Im looking to get these big fights to prove it.Still, Flanagan said he is not going to downplay Cruz, who has won five fights in a row.I do what I need to get the win, but if I feel the stoppage is there, Ill go for it, Flanagan said. Cruz is a strong fighter and very dangerous and more than capable of causing an upset.Im out to prove a point and show everyone that Im world-class. [Jorge] Linares is seen as No. 1 in the division after beating [Anthony] Crolla, and it would be good to get that fight and do something that Crolla couldnt do to prove Im the best around. 0Number of captains who scored a century at an older age than Misbah-ul-Haqs 42 years, 47 days in the history of Tests.
