Lanny McDonald Flames Jersey . -- Ricky Ray
knew right away the news about his injured right shoulder wouldnt be good. The
Toronto Argonauts quarterback hurt the joint in last weeks 35-14 home loss to
the Calgary Stampeders. Hell be out approximately six weeks after partially
tearing the teres major muscle when he was taken down hard to the turf by
defensive lineman Charleston Hughes. "As he hit me and I was falling down, I
felt my arm above my head and kind of knew it wasnt going to be good," Ray told
reporters Friday. "When I got slammed down I knew right away something wasnt
right. "Its frustrating to be out this long but youve just got to try and stay
in it mentally." The good news, though, is Ray, who suffered a separated
shoulder in 2007 with Edmonton, wont require surgery. "Any time you dont have to
have surgery on something, its a nice thing to hear," Ray said. "As bad as it
was knowing I was going to be out an extended period of time its comforting to
know its going to heal on its own and nothing else is required to get it fixed."
Hughes has been the recipient of threats from irate fans for his hit on Ray. On
Thursday, Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said there was nothing wrong about
Hughes hit, a belief supported by Ray. "Thats unfortunate, I felt like it was a
clean hit and its physical," Ray said. "Hes just trying to get in there and put
a hit on the quarterback. "I was just scrambling out and he got a good hit on me
from the backside and I just felt awkwardly." With Ray on the sidelines,
sophomore Zach Collaros becomes Torontos starter and will lead the Argos (5-3)
against the Montreal Alouettes (3-5) at Rogers Centre on Tuesday night. Collaros
led Toronto to a 38-12 home win over B.C. earlier this season when Ray was out
with a knee injury. Ray said hell be readily accessible for Collaros but wont
constantly be talking to the young quarterback. "My philosophy is Im not going
to just be in his ear all the time," Ray said. "I wouldnt want somebody there
after every ball I throw being like, Oh, did you see that? "When I play, I like
to just focus on what Im doing and if I have a question Ill ask it and try and
get help. Im just trying to be there so if he have a question for me I can
answer it for him . . . he knows how to play the quarterback position and can
play it pretty well. Im just there as an extra set of eyes to help him out when
he does come with a question." Losing Ray will be a big blow to Torontos
offence. The 33-year-old has completed 148-of-189 passes (78.3 per cent) this
season for 1,824 yards with 15 TDs and no interceptions. Ray was especially
sharp in his four last starts, completing 69-of-79 passes (87.3 per cent) for
907 yards and nine TDs before his injury. Ray anchors the CFLs top passing
attack (320.6 yards per game) and the Argos are third in scoring, averaging 30.5
points. Collaros certainly impressed against B.C. in his CFL starting debut.
After a full week of working with the starting offence, Collaros completed
21-of-25 passes for 253 yards and three TDs while adding 28 yards rushing in the
July 30 victory. Collaros was forced to come in cold off the bench against
Calgary and wasnt as sharp, finishing 16-of-26 passing for 221 yards with an
interception -- Torontos first this season. Collaros definitely brings a
different skillset to Torontos offence than Ray. The former Cincinnati Bearcats
star is a very mobile quarterback and isnt afraid to use his arm and legs to
make plays. Ray is a more traditional dropback quarterback who has pinpoint
accuracy. Ray is confident Torontos offence wont skip a beat with Collaros
taking the snaps. "Hes a good player," Ray said. "You see the skills he has to
make plays, extend plays out of the pocket. "Hes a smart kid, to, he knows how
to get through his progressions and be accurate with the football and make plays
in the pocket. He also has that extra ability to make plays outside the pocket."
Ray was very durable during his nine seasons in Edmonton, missing just six
regular-season starts. Ray has been forced to deal with more injuries -- and
subsequently miss more playing time -- since coming to Toronto prior to the 2012
campaign. The good news for the Argos, though, is after missing three starts
last year with a knee injury, Ray made a triumphant return and anchored Torontos
late-season march to a Grey Cup title. "As an athlete you dont want to get hurt
. . . but what can you do about it?" Ray said. "Its not like theres a quick fix
for preventing injuries. "Its a physical game and sometimes it just happens." If
theres a silver lining to this latest injury, its forced Ray to learn more about
the muscles of the shoulder. Before now, he admits hed never heard of the teres
major. "No, I didnt," he said with a chuckle. "They were talking about the
rotator cuff and I thought that was one muscle but I guess its like four
different muscles "Anatomy is not my strong suit."

St.ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Seattle Mariners are still going with a
bullpen-by-committee and it worked out perfectly Tuesday night — except for one
minor flaw that Kendrys Morales overcame with a clutch hit against his former
team. Morales hit an RBI single in the 10th inning, leading the Seattle Mariners
to a 3-2 victory against the Los Angeles Angels. It was only the third RBI for
Morales in 30 at-bats against the Angels since he was traded to the Mariners in
December for pitcher Jason Vargas. Charlie Furbush (1-3) faced only one batter
to get the victory, striking out Josh Hamilton with runners at first and second
to end the ninth. Rookie Yoervis Medina got three outs for his first major
league save. Hamilton grounded into a double play his first three times up and
struck out his next two at-bats. The 2010 AL MVP, who signed a five-year, $125
million contract in December, is batting .213 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs in 69
games. "Its hard for me to tell why hes struggling because Ive only faced him a
handful of times," Furbush said. "He just working through whatever hes working
through to try to get back to the big power numbers that hes had in the past."
"I just try to do the things Ive got to do to make myself successful." Kyle
Seager sparked the winning rally with a two-out double in the 10th against
Garrett Richards (2-4). Morales, who struck out his previous three times up,
then lined a 3-2 pitch off the glove of shortstop Erick Aybar to give Seattle
the lead. Seattle grabbed a 2-0 lead on consecutive homers by Raul Ibanez and
Justin Smoak in the second inning against Joe Blanton. But Mark Trumbo connected
in the bottom half, and Albert Pujols tied it with a leadoff drive against Tom
Wilhelmsen in the eighth. "There were a couple of guys in the bullpen we wanted
to try and stay away from, and Tommy was the guy to go to right there," said
manager Eric Wedge said, who got 16 saves from Wilhelmsen in 20 opportunities
before removing him from that role. "It was a fresh inning, and we had to send
him out there for the next inning, too. We were planning on saving Medina to
close, so we couldnt go to him right there." Jeremy Bonderman pitched six
innings of six-hit ball and Oliver Perez got three outs before Wilhelmsen
yielded Pujols 12th homer on an 0-1 pitch. Until then, right-handed batters were
only 5 for 48 against Wilhelmsen, who had not allowed a home run this season in
29 1-3 innings. The 30-year-old Bonderman, who missed the previous two seasons
due to injuries and Tommy John surgery, is 1-0 with a sparkling 0.90 ERA over 20
innings covering his last three starts. The Mariners signed him to a minor
league contract in January. "When you lookk at the physical shape hes in and how
hard hes worked to come back, it was a good guy to give an opportunity to — and
it was worth it," Wedge said.
Dougie Hamilton Jersey. The Angels, who
outscored Seattle 30-4 in the previous three meetings, got their first run when
Trumbo drove Bondermans first pitch of the second into the rock pile in
left-centre for his team-high 16th homer and first since June 1. It ended
Bondermans streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings, equaling his career best
from 2007 with Detroit. Blanton gave up six hits in 6 2-3 innings and tied a
career high with 11 strikeouts, following an eight-day stretch between starts to
work with pitching coach Mike Butcher on his fastball command. Blanton, whose
no-decision left him at 1-10, still shares the major league lead in losses with
former Philadelphia Phillies teammate Cole Hamels. He has a 5.62 ERA in his
first 14 starts with the Angels after signing a two-year, $15 million contract
in December, and has surrendered giving seven home runs during his last four
starts. "Throwing strikes is one thing, and commanding the zone is another,"
manager Mike Scioscia said. "Joe has the ability to throw strikes. Its just
making that quality pitch in a good zone that has kind of waivered a little bit
in his game, and thats when hes had trouble." Ibanez led off the second with his
14th homer. Smoak, who came off the disabled list Tuesday after missing 18 games
because of an oblique strain on his right side, drove the next pitch to right
field for his fourth of the season. "It was nice to come back and pop one on the
first swing," Smoak said. "I figured hed try to get ahead. He left a fastball in
the middle and I put a good swing on it." Smoaks drive landed in the first row
above the 18-foot right field wall. Angels manager Mike Scioscia came out to
suggest fan interference to the umpires, but the ruling was upheld after a video
replay. NOTES: It was only the second time in 806 major league games that
Hamilton grounded into more than one double play. He did it twice on June 18,
2010, with Texas at Boston. ... Ibanez has hit safely in his last 13 games at
Angel Stadium — one off his career best streak at this ballpark. His first
career homer off Blanton came in his 50th at-bat against him. ... The Angels
have scored no more than three runs in any of Blantons last 10 starts while he
was still in the game. ... The Angels have played in a major league-high 26
games that were decided by a one-run margin (10-16). ... The Mariners have hit
49 home runs on the road, compared to 29 at Safeco Field. ... Mariners reserve
1B Alex Liddi was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to make room on the roster for
Smoak.
