Garza pitched eight impressive innings for his first victory in six starts and
the Texas Rangers kept close in the playoff race, beating the Kansas City Royals
3-1 on Saturday night. The Rangers won for only the fifth time in 19 September
games. They remained a half-game behind Cleveland for the second AL wild-card
berth. The Royals, out of the playoffs since winning the 1985 World Series,
dropped 3 1/2 games in back of the Indians. Adrian Beltre got two hits and drove
in a run for Texas. Garza (10-6) was 0-3 with an 8.22 ERA in his first three
September starts. He pitched four-hit ball before giving up Eric Hosmers leadoff
home run in the ninth, and was pulled. Garza struck out five and walked one. He
is 4-5 in 12 starts since the Rangers acquired him on July 22 in a trade with
the Chicago Cubs. After Hosmers 17th homer, Joe Nathan relieved. The Texas
closer struck out two for his 40th save in 43 chances. Nathan posted his 41st
career save against the Royals. opportunities. Jeremy Guthrie (14-12) allowed
three runs and seven hits in six innings. He has permitted six runs and 20 hits
in 14 innings in losing his past two starts. Beltres .374 career batting average
at Kauffman Stadium is the highest for an opposing batter with at least 150
plate appearances. Guthrie gave up a triple to Ian Kinsler to lead off the game.
Kinsler scored on Elvis Andrus groundout. In the third, Guthries control
betrayed him when he walked Andrus and Alex Rios on eight pitches, and both
scored. Beltre bounced an RBI single up the middle and A.J. Pierzynski had a
sacrifice fly. The Royals had only one batter past second base before Hosmers
homer. Jarrod Dyson tripled with two out in the fifth, but was stranded when
Alcides Escobar looked at a called third strike. NOTES: Craig Gentry had three
hits and stole a base for the Rangers. He became the fourth different starting
left fielder in as many games for Texas. The others were David Murphy, Joey
Butler and Jim Adduci. ... Royals RHP James Shields, who starts Sunday, is 10-3
since June 28 after starting the season 2-6.

. Brett Kulak and Jackson Houck of the Vancouver Giants were each charged with
assault causing bodily harm on Aug. 18, according to the B.C. court services. The
original concussion lawsuit against the NHL included 10 former players, and that
number has already grown. More than 200 players have joined, according to
lawyers Steve Silverman and Mel Owens, who are at the forefront of the suit.
Owens, an NFL linebacker-turned-disability lawyer said in a phone interview
Wednesday that "hundreds" of ex-NHL players are going to become part of the
suit, which was filed in U.S. federal court in Washington on Monday. "These are
10 players, but theres hundreds of guys that, theyre in the lawsuit," said
Owens, who works for NBO Law in Beverly Hills, Calif. "They just havent been
named yet. Theyre going to be there." A list of the 200-plus players was not
made available when requested. More than 200 players have joined the effort,
which began with 10 players: Gary Leeman, Bradley Aitken, Darren Banks, Curt
Bennett, Richard Dunn, Warren Holmes, Robert Manno, Blair James Stewart, Morris
Titanic and Rick Vaive. Former New York Islanders centre Bob Bourne announced he
joined the suit shortly after it was filed. Leeman and Vaive in recent days have
politely declined comment about their involvement, deferring to Silverman and
Owens, who said he did not know how many players would wind up being a part of
it. "I dont know how many liiving alumni there are in the NHL that have these
significant problems," Owens said.

that. But like in the NFL, it just matured over time. Once the players find out
that, Oh, there may be hope for me. I might be able to get some help and some
treatment to address my quality of life issues, Im sure theyll be in contact."
More than 4,500 former NFL players sued that league in a case that Owens said
has "parallels" to this one. That settlement was worth US$765 million. Owens
said there wasnt any recruiting being done to get more players to join the
cause. He sent tweets to several former players informing them of the case
beginning Monday. "All of our business that weve ever done has all been by word
of mouth. The players are the ones that talk amongst themselves," he said. "Once
I have knowledge as a player, like you have knowledge and like everybody else
has knowledge, the word spreads. Back in the 60s and the 70s and the 80s the
person with all the knowledge and the power were the owners. They controlled the
message." In a statement released Monday evening, NHL deputy commissioner Bill
Daly called the subject matter "very serious" and said the league intended to
defend the case "vigorously."
