DETROIT -- The way James Conner and Tyler Boyd played in their first post-season
game, its no wonder Pittsburgh coach Paul Chryst is excited about next season.
New Balance
Nederland . With a pair of freshmen leading the way -- and breaking
some long-standing school records in the process -- the Panthers edged Bowling
Green 30-27 on Thursday night in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Conner rushed
for 229 yards. Boyd caught eight passes for 173 yards and also scored on a punt
return. "We obviously have some great young talent and thats why we are so
confident about the future of this program," Chryst said. "We think were in
great shape going forward." Conner broke a Pittsburgh bowl record for yards
rushing held by Tony Dorsett, and Chris Blewitt kicked a tiebreaking field goal
with 1:17 remaining. Conner even played a handful of snaps on the defensive
line. Boyd gave Pitt (7-6) a boost with his versatility as well. One star the
Panthers will have to replace is Aaron Donald, their All-American on the
defensive line. Donald, a senior, helped thwart any last-ditch comeback with a
sack deep in Bowling Green territory in the final minute. "They were without
question the most physical team we faced all season," said Adam Scheier, Bowling
Greens interim coach. "The offensive line was tough, the running back was
obviously a bear to tackle and the whole defensive line was disruptive. We knew
we had to keep Donald and their other guys out of our backfield, but we couldnt
do it." Scheier took over after Wake Forest hired coach Dave Clawson away from
the Falcons. Scheier coached the bowl, but now Dino Babers takes over. Dorsett
rushed for 202 yards in Pitts win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1,
1977. The schools receiving record for a bowl came the next season. In a Gator
Bowl win over Clemson, Gordon Jones had 163 yards receiving. Both marks fell
Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Conner rushed for 165 yards in the second
half, helping Pitt overcome the loss of quarterback Tom Savage, who didnt play
after halftime because of a rib injury. Conner and the Panthers drove 51 yards
in seven plays late in the fourth quarter to set up a 39-yard kick by Blewitt,
who had missed from the same distance earlier. Then Conner was back on the field
on defence, helping the Panthers protect the lead. "After the last game, coach
told me they wanted to unleash me on both sides of the ball, so Ive been getting
a lot of reps both ways," Conner said. "I was pretty tired by the end, but I
wasnt going to tap out. They kept giving me the ball, so I just kept running."
Chad Voytik relieved Savage and put Pitt ahead 27-20 with a 5-yard touchdown run
in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons -- who upset Northern Illinois in Detroit
in the Mid-American Conference title game earlier this month -- tied it on Matt
Johnsons 15-yard strike to Ryan Burbrink with 4:42 to play. Boyds 54-yard punt
return gave the Panthers a 17-3 lead in the second quarter. Bowling Green (10-4)
rallied, tying it at 17 on a 94-yard kickoff return by BooBoo Gates to start the
second half. Bowling Green appeared to catch a break on the kick return by
Gates. A tussle behind the play drew a flag as Gates approached the goal line,
but officials ruled that the touchdown stood, with offsetting penalties after
the play. The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl faces an uncertain future now that the
Detroit Lions have decided to get in the bowl business and will host a game next
season. If this game vanishes from the bowl lineup, this was an entertaining
finale. Conner put Pitt ahead 7-3 with a 15-yard scoring run near the end of the
first quarter. Boyd nearly lost his balance trying to stay inbounds at the end
of his punt return, but he was able to reach the end zone. "I knew I had to stay
inbounds, because Im not in the goal-line package," Boyd said. "So if I stepped
out, I wouldnt get a chance to score." The Falcons rallied thanks in part to an
ill-timed loss of discipline by Donald, who picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty with Bowling Green about to punt from its own territory. The Falcons
ended up scoring on the drive when Alex Bayer took Johnsons short pass on
fourth-and-1 and turned it into a 29-yard touchdown to make it 17-10. Savage
completed eight passes in the first half. Seven of them went to Boyd, for 111
yards.
New Balance 998 Nederland .ca! Hi Kerry,
Heres an interesting one. I know its common knowledge that all players are
responsible for their sticks. We witnessed that when Zack Kassian hit Edmontons
Sam Gagner in the face after a missed check.
New Balance 576 Dames . Hamelin, who
triumphed in the 500 on Saturday, edged out Victor An of Russia by 0.021 seconds
to maintain his lead in the World Cup standings. Russias Vladimir Grigorev was
third. In the relay, Canada took control six laps from the finish line to beat
Russia and the Netherlands.

.com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins placed forward James Neal on injured reserve
Tuesday. There was nothing second-rate about their performance, but second place
is where Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir find themselves following their short
program in the ice dance event on Sunday. Following a pattern that has become
all too familiar for the defending Olympic champions, the American team of Meryl
Davis and Charlie White bested Virtue and Moir by a margin of 2.56 points at the
Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi to take top spot. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita
Katsalapov fed off the pro-Russian crowd and tallied a 73.04, putting them in
bronze-medal position heading into Mondays free dance (10:00 a.m. ET, streaming
live at cbc.ca/olympics). Virtue and Moir, skating to Ella Fitzgeralds Dream a
Little Dream of Me, put their slip-up in the team event far in the rear view
mirror with a seemingly flawless performance, carving perfect turns, nailing
their rotational lifts and staying in sync during their twizzle sequences. As
the music ended and they struck their final pose, Moir let out a triumphant
"Yes!", knowing that the skate represented one of their best performances of the
season. Their joy was short-lived though, as their score of 76.33 came in below
their season best score of 77.59 at the Grand Prix Finals in December, leaving
the door wide open for the reigning world champions Davis and White, who set a
new short dance world record with a score of 78.89. Canadas other medal
hopefuls, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, skated a strong routine that earned
them a 65.93, good for seventh place. The third Canadian entry, featuring
Toronto-born Alexandra Paul and Barries Mitchell Islam, skated a light, airy and
up-tempo routine, marred only by a small bobble on the opening twizzle by Paul.
The 2010 world junior silver medallists finished with a score of 55.91, putting
them in 18th place. Virtue and Moir have some work to do to catch the leaders,
but they were still happy with how the day unfolded. "It was a really fun
performance," the 24-year-old Virtue told CBC Sports. "Obviously, you are here
to defend your title. You also want to have fun. You still love what you do."
Moir, 26, said that it was this type of performance that has kept them going for
the last four years. "Its definitely the reason we keep going. To be on this
stage representing Canada, its a huge thing forr Tessa and I to be part of a
fantastic Olympic Canadian team.
New Balance 1600 Kopen. " Moir added that
they still get plenty of enjoyment out of competitions like these. "We love what
we do. We love skating together. We have a lot of special moments, and that was
one of them." Sundays short dance marked the third head-to-head battle between
the Canadians and Americans at these Olympics. Davis and White beat Virtue and
Moir by three points in the short dance portion of the team event early in the
Games, and repeated the feat in the free dance portion with a seven-point
victory. The two rivals bring contrasting styles to the sport. Virtue and Moir
boast an elegant and flowing style, and a sense of unison that no other team can
match, thanks to nearly 17 years as an on-ice tandem. Davis and White, on the
other hand, typically display a faster and bolder technique than the Canadian
duo, albeit one with arguably less precision. Virtue and Moir have laid claim to
an Olympic gold medal in Vancouver, two world titles and six Canadian
championships during their careers, but theyve consistently come up short
against the American pair over the past two seasons, including at the 2013 world
championship in Virtues hometown of London, Ont. What makes the rivalry even
more peculiar, if not slightly peculiar, is the fact they share not only the
same training facility in Canton, Mich., but also the same coach and
choreographer, Russian-born Marina Zoueva. Zoueva has coached Davis and White
for the past 14 years, and has been working with Virtue and Moir for 10 years.
While they arent close friends with the Americans off the ice, Virtue and Moir
have often said that they have a good relationship with them and that both sides
enjoy the friendly rivalry. Another storyline that has surrounded the athletes
since the team event, an alleged judging scandal, has fortunately faded into the
background. During the opening weekend, the French sports publication LEquipe
had reported that the American and Russian judges were conspiring against Canada
in order to assure a gold medal for Russia in the team competition and gold for
the U.S., in ice dancing. Despite being at the centre of the controversy, Virtue
and Moir insist that the rumours havent affected their focus on or off the ice.
