TORONTO -- Andrew Stein and Glenn Macaulay bought into the Blue Jays hype.
New
Balance 990 DK . Best friends since kindergarten and lifelong
baseball fans, the pair were swept up in the promise of 2013 and purchased
season tickets. From the top level of Rogers Centre above home plate they
watched as Toronto slumped through the spring then came alive during an 11-game
winning streak only to finish last in the AL East. Excitement isnt a word they
used to describe their hopes for 2014. "I wouldnt say worried," said Stein. "Not
optimistic," said Macaulay. "Yeah, not optimistic," said Stein. "Maybe slightly
uneasy that its just going to be a repeat of last year." Stein and Macaulay were
among the Blue Jays season ticket holders at Rogers Centre on Wednesday for the
teams annual State of the Franchise event. Team president and CEO Paul Beeston,
general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons were on hand to take
questions as jazz played throughout the stadium and food and drinks were handed
out to fans wondering just what the state of the team is. Anthopoulos had no
surprise announcements, nor was he worried about being grilled despite promises
of change going unfulfilled during a quiet off-season. "When you dont have a
good season you expect theres criticism that comes with that, that goes without
saying, thats part of it," he said. "But again, these fans, I think its a
different type of setting because these are the season-seat holders. They
support the club. They love the team good and bad. Obviously were here to be
accountable and to make ourselves available to talk and answer whatever
questions they might have." Torontos only notable acquisition has been catcher
Dioner Navarro, who was brought on to replace J.P. Arencibia. Navarro, who hit
.300 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs in 240 at-bats with the Chicago Cubs last
season, barely made the splash that all-stars Jose Reyes or R.A. Dickey did when
Toronto traded for them prior to last season. "(Navarro will) be serviceable. Im
not going to buy his jersey or anything," said Stein. The Blue Jays real need,
the one Anthopoulos promised would be his winter focus, is starting pitching.
Dickey, coming off a Cy Young season, struggled, although not as badly as
Josh Johnson. J.A. Happ missed time after being hit in the head by a frightening
comebacker in May, while Brandon Morrows season ended in July with a forearm
injury. Only Mark Buehrle, who also had a slow start to the season, performed to
expectation. Torontos rotation finished with a 4.81 earned-run average last
season, second worst in the majors, and the starters 899.1 innings pitched were
28th in baseball. But Toronto has stood pat during the off-season. Japanese
phenom Masahiro Tanaka was signed by the New York Yankees before veteran
Matt Garza joined the Milwaukee Brewers. Several pitchers such as Ervin Santana
and Ubaldo Jimenez still remain on the market, but Anthopoulos said progress has
been slowed by free agents who cost teams draft picks. That doesnt apply to the
Blue Jays -- theyve got two protected first-round draft picks. But Anthopoulos
remained non-committal. "We like some of the upside of the guys that are coming
back. Wed still like to add," he said. "I think weve been very open about that.
I dont know whats going to happen obviously between now and the start of camp.
"Depending on how free agency goes or even the trade market, maybe its beyond
that, but we are excited about some of the guys coming back, especially some of
the young guys. Theres upside to the performance of a lot of these guys. But at
the same time were still going to be active and try to get a starter." Whereas
Anthopoulos could only ask fans to stick by the team, Gibbons said hes looking
ahead after making peace with 2013. "After I was home for about two weeks I
said, you know what, its time for a new season," said Gibbons. "Ive always been
an optimistic guy. Its smart to look back and look at some areas to do things
differently maybe to improve some things. But in the end youve got to turn the
page and its a new start here in the next two months." Gibbons, who heard plenty
of calls for his dismissal last season, isnt worried about the direction of the
team. He acknowledged fans frustrations, and that there wont be as much good
will in April as there was last year. "It sure would be nice me coming in here
feeling good going to this thing having won something, but until you do that
youre just hoping and dreaming. So hopefully we can do that." What, then, is the
state of the Blue Jays? Ask again on Opening Day.

playoff. Still, Pittsburgh knows its taut 3-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday
night is a pretty good place to start laying the groundwork. "They are a very
good defensive team," Penguins forward Brandon Sutter said.

Andres Torres lined a game-ending single to right field with two outs in the
10th inning, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 victory against the
Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday to avoid a sweep. Javier Lopez (1-0) pitched
the 10th for the win after Sergio Romo blew his second save in 14 opportunities,
failing to finish off Barry Zitos gem. Buster Posey hit a pinch-hit single to
start the 10th against Antonio Bastardo (1-1) and was sacrificed to second by
Joaquin Arias. Posey advanced to third on a wild pitch before Torres came
through with his fourth career game-ending hit. The Giants earned their fifth
walkoff victory. Zito pitched another gem in his home ballpark and Hunter Pence
homered against his former club for the second time during the three-game
series, but Romo wasnt his usual spot-on self in the ninth. Pence sent a 2-2
pitch into the stands in left field leading off the second for his seventh
homer. Marco Scutaro hit a go-ahead single in the fifth to score Gregor Blanco
after he singled and stole second. Still, Zito is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA in his
four home starts this season -- and the home ERA ranked third-lowest in the
majors. And San Francisco has won Zitos past 11 regular-season starts in the
waterfront ballpark. He pitched into the eighth, struck out three and didnt walk
a batter for the first time this season. Zito left to a rousing standing ovation
from the sellout crowd of 41,048 in the eighth and added an RBI single in the
sixth. Coming off a pair of no-decisions against the division rival Padres and
Dodgers, Zito helped get the Giants back on track following a pair of 6-2 losses
on the heels of their season-best six-game winning streak. Santiago Casilla took
over from Zito after Carlos Ruizs leadoff single, but he came out with a right
knee injury two batters later and Jeremy Affeldt finished the eighth. Romo
allowed Jimmy Rollins leadoff double, an RBI single to Chase Utley and Delmon
Youngs tying sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth. Kevin Frandsen hit his first
home run of the year against his former team to tie the game leading off the
fourth..

Sko Børn. He was booed as he rounded the bases. That was just the
second earned run allowed by Zito in 33 innings at home this season.
Philadelphia did little else until late, and couldnt pull off the clubs first
three-game series sweep in San Francisco since May 18-20, 1984. The Phillies
have never swept at 14-year-old AT&T Park. Their 69-year-old skipper,
Charlie Manuel, managed his 1,331st game for the franchise, matching Gene Mauch
for the most in team history. The Phillies lost for the first time in four
career starts by Jonathan Pettibone, who threw 112 pitches over 5 2-3 innings.
Rollins doubled with one out in the sixth, but was thrown out at third for his
second caught stealing in four attempts. Zitos single in the sixth chased
Philadelphias rookie right-hander. With two outs, Pettibone intentionally walked
Guillermo Quiroz to get to Zito, who singled to right for his fourth hit of the
season and second RBI. The Phillies received the news right-hander Roy Halladay
would have arthroscopic shoulder surgery but could still return this year if all
goes well. The team travels to the Arizona desert to continue a seven-game road
trip that has shown some positive signs after Philadelphia dropped the final two
games of its homestand -- including a 14-2 defeat to the Marlins on Sunday. An
MRI exam on Giants centre fielder Angel Pagans right leg revealed a strained
groin rather than a hamstring injury, which caused him to miss games Sunday and
Monday before he returned Tuesday. He was held out of the lineup Wednesday.
"Angel is feeling better," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He can play but I want to
be cautious with him. The last thing we need is a setback. We feel like this
will go away. He wants to play, doctors say he can play if he can stand it, but
it was my call to give him another day. He feels it hitting, not throwing or
running." Notes: Posey had the day off after a night game until his pinch-hit
appearance in the 10th. ... The Phillies will call up RHP Tyler Cloyd from
Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Halladays turn in the rotation Friday at Arizona.
