PITTSBURGH -- The problems the Pittsburgh Steelers face, to borrow one of coach
Mike Tomlins favourite words, are obvious.
Mitchell Marner Jersey . The solutions? Not
so much. Given an extra week to stew over the worst start in 45 years, Tomlin is
tweaking the lineup hoping to find a spark that will help his team begin the
long road back to respectability. Defensive end Cameron Heyward will start on
Sunday against the New York Jets. Embattled left tackle Mike Adams will sit.
Kelvin Beachum and newly acquired Levi Brown will both get a look at Adams
vacated spot. Rookie Vince Williams will line up alongside Lawrence Timmons at
inside linebacker. The moves are not an elixir, to be sure, but a step toward a
fresh start for a team in desperate need a reboot following an 0-4 September. "I
like the attitude, demeanour and approach to work that the guys have taken,"
Tomlin said. "Thats just part of the equation. Obviously, putting it together
and producing victory is the most significant part of the equation." One the
Steelers have failed to solve. They remain the only team in the league yet to
create a takeaway. Their minus-11 turnover differential is second only to the
even more hapless New York Giants (0-5), and their four sacks are dead last.
Heyward could provide a boost. The former first-round draft pick spent the first
month of the season as the third man in a four-man rotation at end behind
Brett Keisel and Ziggy Hood. While Keisel has looked downright spry at times at
age 35, Hood continues to be a disappointment. Tomlin plans to keep Hood and
Al Woods in the mix but believes Heyward has earned the right to get more snaps.
"I think hes been really solid, not taking anything away from Ziggy," Tomlin
said. "Obviously, both guys will continue to play. We just want Cam to play more
than hes been playing and in order to ensure that, were going to put him in the
starting lineup." Tomlin doesnt need Heyward to create havoc so much as simply
do his job for a defence that is surprisingly benign. The Steelers are 11th in
the league in yards allowed, giving up 321 a game. Not bad by most standards,
but hardly acceptable at a place that has been ranked No. 1 in fewest yards
surrendered four times in the last decade. While the pass rush has been
toothless, the run defence has been even worse. Pittsburgh is 25th against the
run, allowing an average of 122 yards. The Steel Curtain has become little more
than a warm blanket. Tomlin admitted hed like the defence to be more "sound"
against the run. What he would really like, however, is for his players to be
more physical. Though the number of padded practices is limited under the
collective bargaining agreement, Tomlin thinks his players dont have to be
suited up to improve their mindset. "We have to minimize the big plays," he
said. "I think that has been an issue for us ... We just need to get more solid
in that area, minimize big plays and make people work to produce points against
us. Thats how weve done it for a long period of time. We have to quickly get
back to that." Rookie running back LeVeon Bell was a revelation in his debut
against the Vikings, running for a pair of touchdowns. His workload figures to
increase against the Jets, and hell likely have at least one and perhaps two new
faces in front of him. Tomlin called Brown -- brought in from Arizona in a trade
last week -- a "critical addition" and isnt ruling out the prospect of the fifth
overall pick in the 2007 draft starting. Guard Ramon Foster remains bothered by
a strained pectoral muscle and his status wont be determined until later in the
week. If Foster doesnt heal in time, Brown will likely start at left tackle,
with the versatile Beachum replacing Foster. Its not exactly the line the
Steelers projected in August. Then again, that might not be a bad thing
considering how the unit underachieved in September after centre
Maurkice Pouncey went down with a season-ending right knee injury. Already three
games behind AFC North rivals Baltimore, Cleveland and Cincinnati in the
standings, Pittsburgh needs to start moving. How it begins is irrelevant. When
Tomlin talks about the route Adams can go to get back on the field, the coach
might as well be talking about his team too. "Its time for Mike to roll his
sleeves up and go about working to find more consistency," Tomlin said, "so that
he can be the player that we know and he knows he is capable of being."
Kris Versteeg Jersey . The third-ranked
Ivanovic, who won the event in 2008 and 10, served five aces and broke
Wickmayer, also a former winner in 2009, five times. "The result looked easier
than it really was," Ivanovic said.
Darcy Tucker Jersey . Carey Price didnt, but
he still came out on top against one of his rivals for the No. 1 job at the
Sochi Games. The Anahim Lake, B.C., native was stellar in making 39 saves in his
home province and Lars Eller got credit for a bizarre short-handed winner as the
Canadiens defeated the Canucks 4-1.

. The 26-year-old Ireland striker, who has four goals this season, has signed a
three-and-a-half year contract with his new club.MADISON, Wis. -- Melvin Gordon
darted for the end zone, carrying the lunging Purdue defender with him over the
goal line. Nothing seems to stop Wisconsin running backs. Gordon ran for three
touchdowns and 147 yards, James White added 145 yards and a 70-yard score, and
the 24th-ranked Badgers opened Big Ten play by trampling over Purdue with a
41-10 win Saturday. "Theyre just so dynamic, their ability to make people miss
and they really kind of complement each other with the running styles, in my
opinion," coach Gary Andersen said. Wisconsin moved on nicely from last weeks
stunning 32-30 loss to Arizona State, after officials mishandled the final
seconds to deprive the Badgers of a game-winning field-goal try. No last-minute
worries this week. Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0) led by two touchdowns at the half and by
three scores early in the third quarter after Gordon fended off Ricardo Allens
failed last-ditch effort to stop the 15-yard touchdown run. Andersen said he
wanted his players to learn from the loss and move on -- but not necessarily
forget about it. Thats a very sizable chip on the collective shoulders of the
Badgers. They might be a field goal away from being unbeaten heading into next
weekends showdown at Ohio State. "Its just getting started, its not as if were
ever going to forget that," linebacker Chris Borland when asked about the
Arizona State loss. "Were going to play with the idea of taking frustration out
on our opponents all year." Purdue (1-3, 0-1) got walloped with decisive
disadvantages in total yards (546-180), yards rushing (388-45) and first downs
(22-12). Not the way coach Darrell Hazell hoped his first Big Ten game would go.
"Right now, weve got to do a good job as a football team soul-searching," he
said. "Obviously, thats not the way Purdue football wants to play. We need to
get a lot better." Quarterback Rob Henrys 22-yard scramble for a score on what
appeared to be a busted play provided one of the few highlights for the
Boilermakers. Nose guard Warren Herring had a sack and three tackles, and
Borland had six stops and a pass breakup at the goal line with the game still
close in the first half. "We got more push today, overall. We got aa few more
pressures that came clean early, forced him to escape," Andersen said.
Custom Maple Leafs Jersey. "The kids rushed
the passer better today and had some opportunities to make some plays, and they
made them." Wisconsin tallied four sacks on the afternoon after recording just
one combined over the first three games. Purdues defensive highlight came after
Allen intercepted an errant throw by Joel Stave and returned it to the Wisconsin
10 to put Purdue in good shape on its next drive. But two running plays stalled,
and Borland broke up the third-down pass to hold Purdue to a 24-yard field goal
by Paul Griggs. That made it 14-10 early in the second quarter. Still, maybe,
just maybe, the Boilermakers were going to build on their near-upset last week
of Notre Dame before losing 31-24. One big problem: Purdue couldnt stop the run.
Gordons 27-yard scoring run sapped Purdue momentum after Griggs field goal to
put Wisconsin back up by 11. He followed with his 15-yard run early in the third
quarter. "We were in the game in the first half. When the second half came, we
have to find a way to win. We came out a little bit low and they ganged up on us
in the third quarter," cornerback Taylor Richards said. "We have to come out in
the second half and find a way to win." Its not like Purdue didnt know that
Wisconsin would run the ball, though. Its as much a part of Badger football as
students rocking to House of Pains "Jump Around" between the third and fourth
quarters, even with Andersen in his first year calling the shots in Madison.
Statistically, Purdue seemed to be in decent shape coming into the game after
holding its last two opponents to less than 100 yards rushing. Instead, Gordon
and White made the poor-tackling Boilermakers look silly. Gordon had 16 carries
in his fourth-straight 100-yard game. White, the FBS active career leading in
yards rushing (3,013), also got 16 carries. Henry finished 18 for 36 with 135
yards and an interception. He netted zero yards on seven carries. Overall,
Purdues running game was nonexistent again, with starter Akeem Hunt gaining just
31 yards on nine carries. Herrings solid play early set the tone for Wisconsins
active defensive front.
