MONTREAL -- Geroy Simon is the CFLs all-time receptions king. But the Saskatchewan Roughriders slotback was in no mood to celebrate after his team lost a fourth game in a row on Sunday. Simon made the 1,018th catch of his 15-year career when he hauled in a seven-yard pass from Darian Durant nearly 10 minutes into the first quarter of the Roughriders 17-12 loss to the Montreal Alouettes. "Its tough to put it into words after a fourth loss in a row," a dejected Simon said. "It means a lot, but it will mean a lot more in a while. "Im not about individual accolades. Im about winning and right now were not doing a good job." The 38-year-old had three catches on the day to give him 1,020. Simon set the historic mark in the same place, Percival Molson Stadium, where the man whose record he broke made many of his grabs -- former Alouette Ben Cahoon. Cahoon, who played 13 seasons, all with Montreal, set the record when he passed Terry Vaughns 1,006 receptions on Oct. 11, 2010, and added 11 more in the regular season. He retired after winning the Grey Cup that season. Simon did not celebrate on the field. His catch was short of a first down. He just went to the bench and sat down, to polite applause from the crowd of 24,106. "Congratulations to Geroy Simon: a superb talent, valued teammate, consummate professional and now, one of the all-time greats," said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon in a statement. The veteran receiver will be honoured in a special pre-game ceremony at the next Roughriders home game on Oct. 12. It was Simons preference not to have an in-game ceremony. A scoreboard message was played from Cahoon congratulating Simon. "It represents tens of thousands of frequent flyer miles and hundreds of dollars buying all those quarterbacks dinner so theyll get you ball," said Cahoon. "Congratulations Geroy, you earned every one of those balls." Simon appreciated the gesture from the Alouettes and Cahoon, but wanted to focus on winning the game. "Ive been friends with Ben for a long time, before we ever got to this league," said Simon. "Hes a first class guy. "I didnt want them to stop the game or anything like that. I just wanted to play good football. Ben sent me a message last night and I appreciate that. Hes been a great player in this league." Simon broke in with Winnipeg in 1999, but rose to stardom after joining the B.C. Lions in 2001. The Johnstown, Pa., native moved to Saskatchewan this season. Last season, he became the CFLs all-time leader in reception yards. His 47 yards Sunday gave him 16,188 in his career. MORITZ, Switzerland -- Fog prevented downhill racers from getting their Olympic dress rehearsal.ROME -- Gervinho scored a late winner as Roma beat league leader Juventus 1-0 in the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Ivory Coast forward acrobatically finished Kevin Strootmans cross after a well-worked move with substitute Miralem Pjanic to line up a two-legged semifinal with either Napoli or Lazio. It was a match between the top two sides in Serie A. Roma lost 3-0 in the league to Juventus earlier this month to slip eight points behind the two-time reigning league champion. "It was a win we wanted at all costs," Roma captain Francesco Totti said. "Today we showed that we are at the same level as a great Juve side. "For me, theres not all this distance between us and them. But its normal that everyone looks at the current table. Were doing really well, but theyre going beyond the limits." It was also a matchup between the two clubs which have won competition the most times, with both boasting nine Italian Cup victories. Roma, which lost last years final to bitter rival Lazio, started well and had two good opportunities inside the opening 11 minutes but first new signing Radja Nainggolan and then Alessandro Florenzi fired wide. Juventus players and staff called fuuriously for a red card for Mehdi Benatia when he dragged down Sebastian Giovinco as the forward was attempting to race onto Andrea Pirlos long ball.dddddddddddd. However, Benatia escaped with a booking. The home side went close to taking the lead 10 minutes from halftime when Maicon rolled a tantalizing ball across goal and past Juventus goalkeeper Marco Storari -- but there was no Roma player on hand to tap it in. Juventus had the ball in the back of the net in the opening minute of the second half but Federico Pelusos header was ruled out as Mauricio Islas cross had already gone out of play. "Maybe we were a bit too timid in the first half but I dont remember us suffering particularly," Juventus coach Antonio Conte said. "They scored when they had a good chance, while when it happened to us they ruled out the goal." Conte clearly felt the refereeing decisions had not gone Juves way, starting with Islas cross. "The ball seemed in to me," he said. "Also Benatias foul on Giovinco was that of the last man but we accept the referees decision. Its disappointing to be knocked out of a competition, but I dont have anything to reproach the lads for." DALLAS – Standing behind the visitors bench at the American Airlines Center as his team was being pummeled, Randy Carlyle muttered under his breath some of the frustration and disappointment that goes hand in hand with such a thoroughly one-sided defeat. "It gets passed a point of mad and frustration," said Carlyle, bearing the look of a baffled head coach. "It just gets to a point of disappointment and what the heck is going on out there. Those are the things that bring you back to Earth in a hurry. "This is the thud." Toronto hadnt won seven straight in more than 10 years. Thumped 7-1 by Jamie Benn and the Stars in Big D on Thursday night, theyll have to wait at least a little longer to do it once more. The Stars exploded for four goals in an imbalanced middle frame – Benn with a pair of assists – wrestling complete control of a tilt that featured on a whole lot of ills from the visiting hockey club, including a host of turnovers and slew of lost battles. "We didnt really have anything going for a good part of the hockey game," said Carlyle. "We turned the puck over. We didnt make strong plays. We looked like we were a step behind the Dallas hockey club tonight. They skated and we didnt." Considering their recent string of success – the longest win streak by the club in more than seven years – the lacklustre effort seemed to come out of nowhere and was more in line with much of the disappointment and inconsistency that plagued the seasons first half. "It might help put us back down to even-keel here," said Tyler Bozak afterward. "We were pretty confident and maybe a little overconfident after that win streak we had." "Its the management of success as well as well as management when youre not having success of how to remain on an even-keel," Carlyle said. "Obviously we didnt do a very good job of that in our performance tonight." All the elements that flourished so prominently during the six-game win streak disappeared in a hurry. The goaltending had a rare off-night. The previously scorching top line was silent and burned often on the other end. And the power-play, so prominent in the past week and really all season, was a large negative, empty in three attempts with a shorthanded goal against. Blown out in Carolina two weeks ago to the day, the Leafs responded with some of their best hockey, eventually rallying with this most recent win streak. Theyll be looking for more of the same when they visit the suddenly resurgent Jets to conclude the road trip on Saturday. "Weve got to find a way to pick ourselves back up because we cant let this linger with our group," Carlyle concluded. Five Points 1. Rare Off-Night in Goal Between Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer, goaltending has been a strong point for the Leafs all season and more recently during the six-game win streak. But on this night that elite level of performance was nowhere to be found (though they lacked much help). Bernier was bounced for just the second time all season following the third Dallas goal – 13 shots – a redirected Benn point blast that snuck through the five-hole of the 25-year-old. He was replaced by Reimer, who fared no better, yielding four more goals on just 15 shots. "I think they fit in with the rest of our team," said Carlyle of the goaltenders. "Im not going to throw those guys [under the bus] any more than the rest of the group. We just didnt have anything going. We just didnt have it." Leaf goaltenders owned an impressive .932 save percentage during the six-game run, but were hammered for seven goals on 28 shots against the Stars. 2. Top Line Finally Silenced The trio of Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak combined for 12 goals and 25 points during the win streak, but they were completely silenced in Dallas. The line failed to generate much of anything against the Stars – combining for just four shots – while also being burned for four goals against on the other end. "We werent skating. We werent winning battles. We were getting outsmarted pretty much all over the ice," said Bozak. "Especially our line – we were terrible. They outplayed us in every facet of the game. Its just one that weve got to put behind us." Prior to the game, Carlyle described their recent success as more expectation than surprise. "Check the size of their pay cheque," said Carlyle with good humour. "Arent they supposed to do that? Thats what theyre paid to do. Thats the bottom line. The reality of it is they are paid to provide offence and I guess theyre doing their job." Kessels potent seven-game point streak was snapped in the loss. He had six goals and 14 points in that span, but was held to two shots on Thursday. 3. Lupul at LW After residing on the right wing for the better part of a month – mostly due to injuries – Joffrey Lupul has, in recent days, returned to his more comfortable left wing. Lupul spent the past three seasons on the left side, moved there at the request of former Leafs head coach Ron Wilson. Randy Carlyle noted Thursday morning that Lupul "seems to be much more comfortable on the left side than the right side". The reasons why, as explained by Lupul himself, start in the defensive zone. "Im better in my own zone for sure," he told the Leaf Report on Thursday morning. "I find it easier to get the puck out on the wall – which a lot of guys dont. I dont why necessarily I do, [but] I find it easier to protect the puck and play better in my own end." Additionally, the 29-year-old believes he is a more dynamic threat offensively streaking down his off-wing. "I think Im a much better passer off the left side," said Lupul. "[Playing there] just gives me a chance to use my body again to protect the puck whereas on the right wing I feel like Im kind of skating with the puck exposed and it can get knocked off a lot. And it just gives me a chance to buy myself that extra second, whether it be to shoot or to pass." 4. Wrong Direction Hes unquestionably been felled by some particularly rough outings from his teammates, but Reimers season has gradually turned in the wrong direction just as Bernier has clutched hold of the crease. The 25-year-old burst out of the gate with a .949 save percentage in October, but has trended downward ever since. Reimer has started three games in January, while stepping in for Bernier in two others, owning an unflattering .875 save mark in the opening month of 2014. Month Save Percentage October .949 November .916 December .909 January .875 5. Clarkson & Other Injury Updates Missing his fourth consecutive game with an elbow injury, David Clarkson isnt due to return to the Toronto lineup until next week. Clarkson had been playing with an infection in his elbow since December and required minor surgery last week to alleviate the issue. Frazer McLaren meanwhile, out the past five games with a bruised shoulder, was due to meet the team in Winnipeg on Friday. Trevor Smith, sidelined since the middle of December with a broken right hand, is expected to start skating with his teammates next week. Stats-Pack 4 – Goals scored against the Leafs top line on Thursday. 2 – Number of times in 32 starts that Jonathan Bernier has been pulled this season. 7-14-2 – Leafs record when failing to score the first goal. 2 – Number of games this season in which the Leafs have allowed seven goals. .750 – Save percentage for the goaltending duo of Bernier and Reimer against the Stars. 11-8-1 – Leafs record versus the Western Conference this season. Now its official. The Angels beat Seattle 6-5 Saturday night for their 21st victory in 28 games, but this surge came way too late. Earlier in the day, they were mathematically eliminated from post-season contention. After starting the year with big expectations, boosted by the winter signing of former MVP Josh Hamilton, the injury-plagued Angels didnt spend one day atop the AL West after winning their season opener at Cincinnati. The Angels have been no fewer than nine games out of first place since the All-Star break. This is their fourth straight year without a post-season berth, after winning five division titles. "I think the one word that still lingers out of all this clubhouse and how we all feel is certainly frustration," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I dont think theres been any way to sugarcoat it. Its obviously not a good feeling when you dont accomplish your goal. "Theres been some nonperformance on our club, some injuries and some depth issues. But I think weve gone a long way in the past month to show the kind of baseball we can play, particularly on the pitching side. Hopefully well temper that frustration and finish strong," he said. Collin Cowgill homered and also stole home for the Angels. Rookie Grant Green hit a three-run double to help Jerome Williams win his fourth straight start. Cowgill walked and scored in the second inning and hit a solo homer in the fourth. He tripled to open the seventh, then broke for the plate as Andrew Romine squared around to try a suicide-squeeze bunt, and scored when left-hander Joe Saunders pitch sailed to the backstop. Williams (9-10) allowed one run, five hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings. He left after No. 9 hitter Henry Blanco snapped an 0-for-32 drought with a bloop single. "I always want to go out there and do my best," he said. "Ive had a couple of rough stretches, and now I just want to finish strong and end this season on aa good note.dddddddddddd" Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his 36th save in 40 attempts despite giving up Raul Ibanezs 300th career homer. Ibanez and Ted Williams are the only players to hit 29 home runs during the season in which they were 41 years old. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be in this situation," Ibanez said. "Anytime youre in the company of the great Ted Williams -- and its just this one thing that I have in common with him -- its a great blessing. I read his book when I was in high school, and he was the greatest hitter that ever lived." What made this milestone even sweeter for Ibanez was that it came with the Mariners, the team he began his big league career with in 1996. This is his third stint with the club. "Ive always considered myself a Mariner," said the 17-year veteran, who hit a career-high 34 homers in 2009 with Philadelphia. "This is the organization that first game me the opportunity. So to do this in a Mariners uniform, I feel very fortunate." Saunders (11-16) tied the Astros Lucas Harrell and the Cubs Edwin Jackson for the most losses in the majors. Saunders gave up six runs and six hits over seven innings and tied a career best with nine strikeouts. The 32-year-old left-hander threw 125 pitches, one short of his career high. Abraham Almonte scored Seattles second run on a seventh-inning balk by rookie Cory Rasmus. NOTES: Last year, the Angels post-season hopes ended with two games left on the schedule. ... LHP C.J. SHANGHAI, China -- Luke Guthrie stumbled at the end of the third round Saturday and wound up tied for the lead with Rafa Cabrera-Bello in the BMW Masters. Guthrie has led this European Tour event since his 65 in the opening round, and he had a three-shot lead at one point on the back nine at Lake Malaren. But his tee shot caught the bunker on the 16th, leading to a bogey. And he was in such an awkward spot on the 18th green that Guthrie felt his best option was to chip off the putting surface. He missed an 8-foot putt to take another bogey for an even-par 72. Cabrera-Bello was far more efficient, keeping bogeys off his card in a round of 67. His final birdie on the par-3 17th turned out to be good enough for a share of the lead. They were at 8-under 208, one shot ahead of Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. Even though he finished poorly, Guthrie still managed to see the big picture. In his first trip to Asia, his first time playing a regular European Tour event filled with names he has only seen in print, he had a tie for the lead with one round to go. "Beginning of the week, if I was tied going into the fourth round, Id have taken it, take my chances for tomorrow," Guthrie said. "Im excited for the day. I just kind of let a few shots get away toward the end, and thats never run. But Im tied for the lead going into tomorrow. Im excited." A win would allow Guthrie to stay in Shanghai one more week for the HSBC Champions, a World Golf Championship that counts toward the PGA Tour. Theres more at stake for him than that. Because of the strong field at the BMW Masters, a win might be enough to put Guthrie well inside the top 50 in the world. Suddenly, though, those last 18 holes feels like a long way to go. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano had a 67 and was one shot behind. Ten other players were within five shots of the lead. Lee Westwood thought he might be closer until he finished with back-to-back bogeys for a 70, leaving him five shots behind. Peter Uihlein had a 69 and also was five back. Rory McIlroy ran off four straight birdies to start the back nine and was trying to work his way into contention until he failed to birdie the par-5 15th, and then took double bogey on his last hole for a 71 that left him six shots behind. John Dalys return to golf, which looked so promising in the opening two rounds, fell apart on a windy afternoon. He took a pair of triple bogeys and shot 44 on the back nine, sending him to a 78 and out of contention. Daly had been within five shots of the lead until the back nine. It didnt look like anyone would get close to Guthrie, the only player to reach 10-under at any point. Cabrera-Bello opened with two straight birdies, and while he only made two more on the back nine, he plodded along in the wind and never dropped a shot. The Spaniard will be going for his third European Tour win. "Im not like really excited or anything," he said. "Im happy, Im proud, Im confident and Im enjoying the tournament so far. Hopefully, tomorrow I can keep those feelings and take them on to the golf course with me, go out there, play my best and enjoy." Fernandez-Castano looked like he would drop shots at the end, like so many other players. His tee shot went into the water on the par-3 17th -- the only green he missed in the third round -- but he recovered beautifully to drop only one shot, and then picked up a rare birdie on the 18th to get back into the picture. Gregory Bourdy, who won the Wales Open this year, had a 67 and was two shots behind. Paul Casey missed a short par putt on the last hole for a 71, though he was only three shots behind, along with Scottish duo of Craig Lee and Scott Jamieson. Simon Dyson never had a chance to make a move. He left the course Friday in a six-way tie for second, only four shots behind. When he arrived, however, he was shown a video of his play on the eighth green of Fridays round. After marking a short putt, Dyson inexplicably used the golf ball to tamp a spot on the green directly in his line. Thats a violation of Rule 16-1a, which carries a two-shot penalty. Dyson was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. It was a big blow for Dyson, who is No. 66 in the Race of Dubai. Only the top 60 advance to the World Tour Championship in Dubai to close out the year, and because he is not in the HSBC Champions next week, he will have only one tournament to try to crack the top 60. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays rode the momentum of a marathon victory to another big win. Desmond Jennings drove in four runs, Alex Cobb took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Saturday in a matchup of exhausted teams to maintain their lead in the AL wild-card race. "Weve got to keep things going," Jennings said. "Theres no relaxing or anything like that. Keep finding ways to win games." The first pitch came 10 hours, 56 minutes after the Rays 5-4, 18-inning win over Baltimore that ended at 2:05 a.m., a game that stretched on for 6:54 -- a record time for both teams. Saturdays game, by comparison, seemed to breeze by in 2:51. "You cant put into words how appreciative you are when youre on the mound and these guys after an 18-inning game when youre in bed sleeping while theyre putting together a win, and they come out with the same intensity for you the next day," Cobb said. "Its amazing." Cobb, in a common practice, left the ballpark early Friday night and went to bed 2 1/2 hours before the game ended. Tampa Bay (85-69) and Cleveland (85-70) hold the two AL wild-card positions, with Texas (84-70) a half-game back. The New York Yankees (82-73) overtook Baltimore, which is tied with Kansas City at 81-73 and trails by 3 1/2 games. Cobb didnt allow a hit until Steve Clevenger lined a single to right with two outs in the fifth. The Orioles had only two hits over the final 11 innings on Friday. "I think it was more Cobb than anything," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "Hes got command of that changeup, to both left and right-handed hiitters.dddddddddddd. Hes impressive." Chris Davis tripled with one out in the ninth off Cobb, a fly ball David DeJesus struggled to locate in left. Adam Jones followed with an RBI single that chased Cobb, who struck out 12 and walked two. Closer Fernando Rodney completed the five-hitter. Miguel Gonzalez (10-8) gave up three runs, two hits and five walks in six innings. The right-hander had been 2-0 with an 0.92 ERA in his previous three starts at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay went ahead in the fifth when Jose Molina and Yunel Escobar walked. One out later, Jennings hit his career-high 14th homer. Jennings added an RBI triple in the seventh and scored on Ben Zobrists single off Francisco Rodriguez. Eleven players who went the distance on Friday came back to start on Saturday: Baltimores Davis, Jones, Nick Markakis, Manny Machado, J.J. Hardy and Danny Valencia, and Tampa Bays Zobrist, Escobar, David DeJesus, Wil Myers and Evan Longoria. Baltimores Matt Wieters, who caught all 18 innings, was rested. "I was worried with the guys that went all the way, and they did fine," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Showalter agreed. "Everybody was engaged and ready to play today," Showalter said. "No excuses." ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor will miss Sundays game in Houston because of a sprained right knee. The Raiders ruled out Pryor on Saturday and announced that undrafted rookie free agent Matt McGloin will start against the Texans. Pryor had a setback at practice on Friday and had been listed as questionable. He leads all NFL quarterbacks with 504 yards rushing. But he wore a thick brace over his knee during last weeks 24-20 loss to the New York Giants when he was held to a season-low 19 yards on the ground and sacked four times. McGloin was 7 for 15 for 87 yards in relief of Pryor against the Eagles in Week 9 in his first game action of his career. He will be the 17th quarterback to start for Oakland since the start of the 2003 season. The Raiders also promoted rookie Tyler Wilson from the practice squad to back up McGloin and waived defensive end Brian Sanford. Wilson was a fourth-round pick but was beaten out for a roster spot by McGloin. McGloin entered training camp fourth on the depth chart. He was originally a walk-on at Penn State before setting the school record for career touchdown passes. "What can you say about Matt McGloin? Having been in that league, I know it takes a smart guy, it takes a competitive guy, it takes a guy that does the same thing every day," said Penn State coach Bill OBrien, the former offensive co-ordinator for the New England Patriots. "He works at it. Hes in the office early, he leaves late. Thats what Matt is. Everything Matt gets, he deserves because he works for it. Its going to be fun to watch him play." McGloin will start against another undrafted free agent in Houstons Case Keenum. This marks the first time since 2011 that two undrafted free agent quarterbacks started against each other. Kansas Citys Tyler Palko faced Chicagos Caleb Hanie on Dec. 4 that year, and Miamis Matt Moore faced Dallas Tony Romo on Nov. 24. Disregarding the strike year in 1987, this will be just the second time two undrafted quarterbacks in their first year in the NFL started against each other, according to STATS LLC. The only other time it happened came on Dec. 1, 1985, when Dieter Brock of the Los Angeles Rams faced Bobby Hebert of the New Orleans Saints. He was stellar at the plate. Chacin tossed six shaky innings and helped himself with his first career home run and the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Friday night. Troy Tulowitzki, Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson also went deep for the Rockies, who won a day after outlasting St. Louis in a 15-inning marathon in their longest game of the season. Paul Goldschmidt hit his NL-leading 35th homer and drove in two runs and A.J. Pollock homered for Arizona. During the game, The Denver Post reported that Colorado owner Dick Monfort wants to bring manager Walt Weiss back for next year. The Post said Monfort is pleased with the job Weiss has done in his first year despite the fact that the Rockies will finish with a losing record for the third straight season. Weiss, who signed a one-year deal last November, said after the game nothing has been finalized. "I havent signed any extension," he said. "Id love to come back, but there will be time for that." The Diamondbacks were playing a day after the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West in Phoenix and then celebrated by jumping into the Chase Field pool. Some players were upset by the move, but Goldschmidt wasnt bothered. "I cant speak for anyone else, but I didnt care. Its just my opinion," he said before Fridays game. "Im not saying the other guys who spoke out against it are wrong, for me they can do whatever they want. They won." Outfielder Adam Eaton said some of the players werent happy about the Dodgers celebration but pointed out they could have prevented it. "We werent all thrilled with it. We had a chance to win, we had a chance to send them on their way and we didnt do that so its our own fault for letting it happen," he said. The Rockies couldnt do much against starter Randall Delgado. The right-hander allowed three hits and two walks before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth. His only mistake was Chacins two-run homer in the third that tied the game 2-all. "I feel I hit it good and I saw the outfielder running," Chacin said. "I was happy to tie the game and give the team a chance to win later." Chacin had the home run ball, which bounced bacck onto the field, in his locker.dddddddddddd "It was a mistake. I never pitched here before but I heard from everybody to be careful with the curveball," Delgado said. "I made a mistake and I paid for it. I never thought it was going to be the pitcher." The score stayed tied until Blackmon greeted reliever Tony Sipp (3-2) with his fifth home run to lead off the sixth. Josh Rutledge singled and Dickerson hit a ball off the facing of the second deck to make it 5-2. It was Dickersons fourth home run. J.J. Putz relieved Sipp and gave up a two-out RBI single to Charlie Culberson to make it 6-2. "They didnt miss today," Arizona catcher Wil Nieves said. "They made us pay. They hit the ball pretty good when we made those mistakes." Goldschmidt homered off Mitchell Boggs in the seventh to make it 6-3. Tulowitzki answered with his 24th of the year, a two-run shot to centre to give Colorado an 8-3 lead. "Three home runs from the relievers," manager Kirk Gibson said. "The relievers werent very effective at all tonight." Arizona showed it was over the pool party right away. Eaton led off the game with a triple and scored on Pollocks eighth home run to make it 2-0. Chacin (14-9) worked out of trouble all game in part because of five walks. He only allowed two runs and was able to pitch his way out of jams to earn his first win in three weeks. "I couldnt control my sinker and my slider. I wasnt throwing them for a strike, I was getting behind in the count and had runners every inning," Chacin said. "I was happy I was able to find a way to get out of the innings." He loaded the bases in the sixth with two walks but got pinch-hitter Willie Bloomquist to line out to end the inning. "That was a huge inning there," Weiss said. NOTES: Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... The last Colorado pitcher to homer was Alex White on Sept. 16, 2012, at San Diego. ... Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid is in line to miss another 2-3 weeks with a nagging quad injury. The 27-year-old has missed a combined 30 games to injury heading into the Bruins game against the Washington Capitals on Thursday. An injury to the quad has kept him out of the lineup since Jan. 19. He had finally resumed skating and was very close to a return after the Olympic Break before re-aggravating it. Boston acquired defenseman Andrej Meszaros from the Flyers for a conditional pick in this years draft and claimed Corey Potter off waivers from Edmonton on Wednesday, in part to alleviate the effects of McQuaids absence, along with Dennis Seidenbergs season-ending ACL tear and surgery. Moments after his Brooklyn Nets teammates ran out onto the court to congratulate him following their 100-98 overtime win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, Johnson could only shake his head at scoring only 13 points on 6-of-19 shooting. But two of those shots were game-changers. The first, a short floater with 30 seconds left, sent the game into overtime. The second, a close-range teardrop, fell in as time expired. Johnson grabbed a loose ball tipped out to him by teammate Kevin Garnett and glided up the court as the clock ran down in overtime. "I knew I didnt have to take a rushed shot," Johnson said. "I just took my time coming up the court and got in the paint and made a play. I hesitated to make them (defenders) think I was going to pull up at the 3-point line. "I had to get as close as I could. Obviously, I couldnt make a shot to save my life tonight." Brook Lopez scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime and added seven rebounds and three blocked shots to help the Nets pick up their first road win of the season. The Suns had tied the game on a lob to P.J. Tucker for a dunk with 57 seconds left in overtime. Tucker scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime for the Suns, who had been undefeated at home in four previous games. Tuckers 3-pointer out of the right corner with 39.1 seconds left in regulation gave the Suns a 92-90 lead, but Johnson tied it seconds later with his floater. Goran Dragic led five Suns in double figures with 19 points. Dragic, playing with 13 stitches near his left eye from a collision with Portlands Mo Williams on Wednesday, added 10 assists. The Nets lost point guard Deron Williams with 7:26 to play in the first quarter when he went down in a heap driving to the basket. Williams hopped off the court with what was determined to be a sprained left ankle and did not return. X-rays were negative, and the team did not give a timetable for Williams return. "I landed on (teammate Mason) Plumlees foot," Williams said. "All my weight was on it (the ankle). Its frustrating. No words can describe it. Sick of getting injured, sick of being hurt. I just want to be healthy and help my team.dddddddddddd" Williams had ankle problems in the preseason. The first quarter saw the Suns lead by as many as 12 as the Nets shot 25 per cent from the field. Phoenix took its largest lead of the game at 46-32 with 3:47 to go in the second quarter after Gerald Green hit a free throw. Guard Eric Bledsoe scored all 13 of his first-half points in the quarter for the Suns. The Nets began to chip away. Shaun Livingston, Williams replacement at the point, scored the last six points of the first half and the Nets cut the Suns lead to 50-46 at halftime. Livingston finished with a season high 18 points and six assists. "Just not offensively but defensively, he was big for us," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "You tip your hat to him." The Nets stayed hot in the third quarter, scoring the first 16 points. Lopez, with only two points at the break, had for 10 in the first six-plus minutes of the third. His layup off a pass from Livingston made the score 62-50 for Brooklyn and prompted a Phoenix timeout. "When teams get tough like that, you have to buckle down," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Thats when other teams smell blood. They got a run going, then they turned up the defence." The Suns never led by more than four in the fourth quarter, and Johnsons driving layup with 5:21 to play gave the Nets an 84-83 lead. "They are more experienced than us, and they made the tough shot and we didnt," Dragic said. "But thats part of the sport." NOTES: Five Nets and three Suns are on the NBA All-Star ballot: Johnson, Williams, Garnett, Lopez and Paul Pierce (Fridays starting five for Brooklyn); and Bledsoe, Dragic and Markieff Morris for the Suns. ... The Suns broke out their road purple jerseys for the game, while the Nets wore their typical home whites. . The game marked the first time brothers Miles and Mason Plumlee played against each other at the professional level. Miles Plumlee starts at centre for Phoenix and Mason Plumlee entered the game for the first time late in the first quarter for Brooklyn. . Former NFL star Terrell Owens attended the game, sitting courtside a few seats down from the Suns bench. He drew a few boos when he was introduced to the crowd. CARSON, Calif. -- Seattles Eddie Johnson and Los Angeles Juninho traded first-half goals and the Sounders and Galaxy settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday night. Johnson headed home a corner kick to give Seattle a 25th-minute lead, and Juninho scored on a 24-yard free kick in first-half stoppage time. Seattle (15-8-5), which saw its five-game winning streak halted, increased its lead in the Western Conference and Supporters Shield standings to two points. Los Angeles (13-10-6) jumped back into fourth place in the West, five points behind the Sounders. Both teams were without their U.S. national team stars. Galaxy forward Landon Donovan sprained his ankle sustained last weekend and Sounders forward Clint Dempsey strained a calf in training this week. The Galaxy were dominant after halftime, scoring a potential tiebreaking goal that was waved off and created little else that was concrete. "We just werent good enough in the final third of the field, with the final pass or our look at the goal, and it made a difference in the game," Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said. "We obviously got the one goal called back. If that was a foul, then maybe Eddie doesnt get his goal in the first half. I thought (the officiating) was inconsistent, and in a tight game like that, those kinds of plays and calls are what decides the outcome." Johnson scored on an open header from about 8 yards, losing Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez as he started his run at the top of the box to get to Mauro Rosales serve. Johnson nearly scored another in the 39th, but Los Angeles goalkeeper Jaime Penedo leaped to grab his open shot in the box. Juninho tallied with the final touch of the first half, bending a free kick from just above the semicircle inside the left post. Rookie Gyasi Zardes forced a leaping save from Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning with a blast toward the upper-right corner in the 19th minute, and he appeared to put the Galaxy ahead following a free kick 15 minutes into the second half, after Gonzalez headed Juninhos cross into the goalmouth. Referee Silviu Petrescu whistled the Galaxy for a foul, apparently on defender Todd Dunivant, while the ball was in the air. "I think they had a little more possession than we had, for sure," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "But I think that we had some very dangerous chances. ... I think we had opportunities to get our second goal, but thats the way it is. Its an end-to-end game, an exciting game for the fans, but it wasnt always the best soccer." DAVOS, Switzerland -- Glen Metropolit hasnt played an NHL game since 2010, but on Thursday, the oldest player on Canadas Spengler Cup roster showed why hes the captain of the Canadian squad. After nearly scoring on his first shift of the game, the 39-year-old Metropolit -- whos played for Lugano in the Swiss league the past two seasons -- picked up a goal in the first period and assisted on Derek Walsers game winner in the third as Canada opened up the Spengler Cup with a 5-4 victory over the HC Vitkovice Steel of the Czech Republic. "Even at his age, on the blue-line and in the offensive zone, hes still one of the best players in the game in Switzerland so thats where hes going to be really good for us," head coach Doug Shedden said. "Hes played for me before and thats why I made him captain. This could be his last Spengler Cup and his children are here visiting from Florida. "Its just something that gets him excited about playing." Byron Ritchie, Micki DuPont, and Alexandre Bolduc also scored for Canada in a back-and-forth offensive game that saw leads slip away between both teams four times. Rudolf Huna, Peter Huzeka, Roman Szturic and Lukas Kucsera scored for Vitkovice. Vitkovices Filip Sindelar was the busier of the two goaltenders, stopping 37 of 42 shots in the losing effort. Canadas Chris Mason made 18 saves. "We were outshooting them pretty good all night," Shedden said. "We really carried the play against them." Ritchies goal tied the game at 4-4 at 7:58 of the third period, and Walser beat Sindelar off passes from Anthony Stewart and Metropolit at 13:47 to pull Canada ahead for good. Bolduc opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 2:30 of the first period, but Kucsera responded with a goal for the Czech club team less than two minutes later. Canada took the lead again on Metropolits goal, and Vitkovice replied to take a 2-2 tie into the first intermission. The second period proved costly for Canada when a turnover gave Vitkovice a 4-3 lead 11 seconds after DuPont tied the game 3-3 on a power play. Shedden said the mistake could be chalked up to unfamiliarity between his players, whove had just one practice and one morning skate together before their first game. "The problem was we gave up some easy scoring chances off some miscues and thats going to happen with guys who havent played together, and it happens every night anyway if you have played together." Shedden said. "I thought their goalie really kept them in it because we really crashed the net all night, and it showed the heart of the Canadians. "We were down going into the third period and we thought we were playing well enough, we just had to keep at it and we did that. You work hard enough eventually youre going get rewarded with a couple goals." Canada plays host HC Davos on Saturday. "No excuses." Someone jokingly wrote "Early hitting 7 a.m." on the message board in Tampa Bays clubhouse Saturday morning. NOTES: Baltimore recalled LHPs Mike Belfiore and Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk. ...
