SANDY, Utah -- Steven Lenhart scored two goals in a four-minute span of the first half to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. The Earthquakes second victory in 15 road games this season moved them within three points of a playoff spot with four games remaining in the Major League Soccer regular season. "It was a big win for sure," San Jose coach Mark Watson said. "We knew we maybe had to be perfect, and win the rest of our games. I thought the effort and the commitment the players put in was fantastic." Real Salt Lake, which had won this seasons previous two meetings by shutout, got a goal from Javier Morales in the 19th minute. It was his eighth of the season and came during a flurry of scoring on an otherwise quiet night at the goal. Real Salt Lake remained tied for second place behind Seattle in the chase for the Supporters Shield, awarded to top team in the regular season. Still, it missed an opportunity to capitalize on a struggling Earthquakes team that won the Shield a season ago. Lenhart began the goal spurt when he headed in a cross from Cordell Cato in the 18th minute. After Morales equalizer, Lenhart beat goalkeeper Nick Rimando with another header, this time off a free kick from Shea Salinas. "I think he heads the ball harder than I shoot it," Salinas said of Lenhart, who recorded the sixth career multi-goal game of his career. "Its pretty impressive." Lenhart entered the night with two goals in 17 games and hadnt scored since July 27 against Portland. The forward followed each goal with an animated celebration that included a leap into the air and fist pump toward a section of the announced crowd of 20,504 - the fourth-largest in Rio Tinto Stadium history. Lenhart left to a chorus of boos when he was replaced at the beginning of stoppage time. San Jose, which ranks 16th in the league in scoring, tallied more than one goal for just the second time in seven games. Morales goal came on a corner kick from Kyle Beckerman. Salt Lake, which played without injured leading scorer Javier Morales (calf), had its three-game home winning streak snapped. Salt Lake tested the Earthquakes defence in the second half, but repeatedly failed to connect on crossing passes into the goal box. Robbie Findley and Chris Wingert each narrowly missed on shots that went wide left in the final 20 minutes. PORTLAND, Ore. -- LaMarcus Aldridge wasnt even sure he was going to play against the Clippers. Portlands top scorer and rebounder had his wisdom teeth removed on Sunday. So on Thursday night he was still in some pain. Worse, he hadnt had much to eat. But Aldridge came out and had 32 points and 10 rebounds for the Trail Blazers in a 116-112 overtime victory over the Clippers. "Ive had nothing but soup for the last four days," he lamented. "So I was a little worried about my energy levels." In the end, he didnt even have a turnover as the surprising Blazers upped their record to an NBA-best 24-5. Portland has won seven of their last eight games, and theyve dropped just two at home this season. The Clippers, playing the second of a back-to-back, mounted a challenge after trailing by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter. Blake Griffin had 35 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Paul finished with 34 points and 16 assists. Aldridge hit a fadeaway with 39 seconds left in overtime and Portland went ahead 110-109. Griffin missed a layup on the other end before Nicolas Batum made a pair of free throws to make it 112-109 with 26.5 seconds to go. After Griffin dunked to narrow it again, Damian Lillard made two free throws for Portland. Portland clung to a 114-112 lead with 13.4 seconds left and padded it with Wesley Matthews foul shots. Paul missed a 3-point attempt as time ran out. Aldridge scored all of Portlands field goals in overtime, and finished with his ninth game this season with at least 25 points and 10 rebounds, second only to Minnesotas Kevin Love. As for his teeth? "Its a little bit throbbing," he shrugged. It was the second of back-to-back losses for the Clippers. Earlier Thursday, the NBA said its referees made a mistake when they ejected Griffin in the teams 105-103 loss to the Warriors on Wednesday night. Griffin got his second technical with 10:43 left after scuffling with Andrew Bogut, following Warriors forward Draymond Green to the showers after they got into it at the end of the third. "A common foul should have been called on Griffin for initially attempting to dislodge the Warriors Andrew Bogut and a technical foul should have been asssessed to Bogut for grabbing Griffin by the shirt and wrestling with him," Rod Thorn, the NBAs president of basketball operations, said in a statement.dddddddddddd Clippers coach Doc Rivers said he thought Griffin handled the situation well. "Everyone is a target at some point in their career," Rivers said. "You just have to play through it." It was the second ejection for the Clippers in as many games. Forward Matt Barnes was ejected with 56 seconds left in the third quarter of a 120-116 OT win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night. Barnes fouled Love. "Its a long season. Were in a bad ejection rut right now," Rivers said. "Well get out of it." No one got tossed on Thursday. Mo Williams made back-to-back 3s to give Portland a 34-22 in the first half. The Clippers responded with a 9-0 run to close to 34-31, but Aldridge scored six straight points in an 8-2 run and Portland stretched the margin to 42-33. Pauls 3-pointer closed the Clippers to within 47-46 at the intermission. Dorell Wright hit a 3-pointer that gave the Blazers an 84-75 lead early in the fourth quarter. But the Clippers clawed back in, and Pauls pull-up jumper made it 97-96 for Los Angeles first lead of the second half. After Aldridges tip-in, Paul added another jumper to give the Clippers a 99-98 lead then nailed a step-back 21-footer from the corner with 9.3 seconds left. Undaunted, Batum hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 101 with 5.3 seconds to go. Paul missed a 17-footer to send the game into overtime. "I got right where I wanted to -- I probably tricked myself too much, I dont even know if they had a foul to give," Paul said. "And with five seconds left I think I went a little too quick because I thought they were going to try and use one of their fouls. I didnt think I would end up as wide open as I was -- Ive got to make that shot. " Notes: The game was the first of three meetings between the two teams this season. The Clippers claimed last seasons series 3-1. ... The Clippers 14 first-quarter points are the fewest theyve scored in the first quarter. ... DeAndre Jordan finished with 19 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. ... Barnes also fouled out in OT. DETROIT -- Canadas Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch set a personal best score en route to the silver medal in pairs on Sunday at Skate America, the first stop on the ISU Grand Prix figure skating circuit. World champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia won the gold medal with 237.71 points, Moore-Towers and Moscovitch followed at 208.45 and Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia were third at 187.35. It was the same top-three order after Saturdays short program. "This is the kind of start we definitely wanted in an Olympic year," said Moscovitch, from Toronto. "Its a confirmation that we are doing the right thing with our programs. And we know there is still a lot of room for improvement." Moore-Towers and Moscovitchs previous best overall score was 199.50 set in a fourth place finish at the world championships last season. "Its really been a combination of factors thats helped us achieve these scores this early in the season," said Moore-Towers from St. Catharines, Ont. "Our programs are a lot more consistent and we are a lot better at telling a story when we perform." Margaret Purdy of Strathroy, Ont., and Michael Marinaro of Sarnia, Ont., were eighth. The Canadians were also pleased with their performance, seeing it as a building block to develop their Olympic season. Moore-Towers and Moscovitch had some slight errors, such as his step-out on their side-by-side triple salchows. The free skate, to a "Fellini Medley" by Nino Rota, was not their original concept when they started preparing for the year. They didnt feel a strong connection to the first program, and switched to the Fellini selection for a better spirit. The pair said the Skate America scores for the program validated their decision. "Both feel that this is the program that will take us where we want to go," Moscovitch said. In womens singles competition, Japans Mao Asada beat American Ashley Wagner to take the championship. Asada, the leader going into the free skate, won despite a fall on her triple axel and a two-footed landing on her triple lutz. She scored 204.55 points, thanks to her elevated technical difficulty. Wagner, the 2012 Skate America champion, finished with 193.81. Russias Elena Radionova, only 14, finished third at 183.95 in her first ISU Grand Prix event. "I am not completely satisfied with my performance today," Asada said, through a translator. "This was a learning experience." Asada scored higher than Wagner in each of the five program component elements, more than overcoming a one-point deduction for falling. MALMO, Sweden -- As the minutes ticked down on Canadas victory over the United States, the overwhelmingly Canadian crowd of 3,882 at the Isstadion chanted "Foo-KAL-eh!" That was for goaltender Zach Fucale, the key man in Tuesdays 3-2 win that gave Canada first place in its preliminary round group and a date with Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the world junior hockey championship. "It gave me a lot of energy," the 18-year-old said. "It was very special. "It just lifts you and you sort of play in the moment. It was good for me and the team." Fucale, given a second straight start after helping Canada to a 5-3 win over Slovakia on Saturday, couldnt recall ever having his name chanted quite that way. "Maybe a couple of thousand chanting against me," he offered with a laugh. "In Quebec City it happened. Maybe tonight a little louder." Connor McDavid and Curtis Lazar scored in the third period and Fucale stoned Connor Carrick on a breakaway. Stefan Matteau scored for the Americans with 2:15 left to play on a shot that eluded Fucales glove, but Canada shut the door the rest of the way to pull off a win in their toughest, most emotionally charged game of the tournament. American captain Riley Barber and Canadas Nic Petan traded goals in the second frame, after Fucale shone in a scoreless first period in which the Americans controlled the play and had a 13-6 shot advantage. Only a regulation time win would give Canada (3-0-1) first place over the U.S. (3-1-0). The Canadians will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Thursday at the Isstadion. As usual, coach Brent Sutter wasnt offering much insight about his teams upcoming opponent. "We now have 48 hours to prepare for our next opponent. Our focus over the next two days needs to be on this game and only on this game," was all he would say. The Swiss pulled off a 4-3 shootout win over Finland, but it didnt lift them out of fourth place in their group. What the win did, however, was give the Americans a very tough quarter-final opponent in Russia. The Canadian squad got all it needed to win -- solid goaltending, timely scoring and strong special teams play. The Americans went into the game with a whopping 58 per cent power play success rate (11-for-19), but were held scoreless during all three man advantages. Canada answered with Lazars power-play marker in five opportunities. "It was the first time weve been minus on special teams in four games and that was the difference," said American coach Don Lucia. Technically, Barbers goal at 3:29 of the second was short-handed. The teams were each down a man and Barber came around the net and caught Fucale moving the wrong way one second after Canadas Taylor Leiers slashing call expired. Some hard work by Anthony Mantha produced the tying goal at 12:49, as he used his long reach to push the puck to the left side where Petan trailed in late to beat Jon Gilles to an open side. Petan had scored the game-winner and an empty-neet goal in Canadas 5-3 win over Slovakia on Monday.dddddddddddd Mantha picked up his team-leading 10th point in four games. Canada killed a penalty to start the third and then got one just as their own power play ended 3:54 into the third when Josh Morrissey got the puck to the net and McDavid had two chances to slide it past Gilles. The 16-year-old McDavid was under pressure since his benching in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Czech Republic, and scoring a goal could go a long way to restoring confidence in the highly skilled Erie Otters forward. "Maybe a little bit," said McDavid. "As a hockey player you have to stay even keeled. Things happen in the game. The highs, the lows. You have to remain pretty confident. I think Ive done a pretty good job of that." Lazar was camped in front for the re-direct on a power play at 6:13 as the puck went from Derrick Pouliot to Jonathan Drouin to the Edmonton forward for his second goal in as many games. "Im really getting into my element," the Ottawa Senators prospect said. "Coach Sutters been moving me around. Ive played centre, right and left wing. Im still getting used to things, but it feels good to contribute." The game also saw big forward Frederik Gauthier moved from left wing to centre, where he drew praise from Sutter for winning several defensive zone faceoffs. But most of the post-game attention was on Fucale, the chatty goaltender who backstopped the Halifax Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup last spring. Fucale was dropped to backing up Jake Paterson after the first of three pre-tournament exhibition games, but it looks like hes Sutters man now. "Hes a confident young man and he stood tall," said Sutter. "We need that." Fucales teammates laugh about Fucales non-stop talking, even when hes by himself in the net during games. "I try to stay low key, but maybe I talk a lot," Fucale said. "I love Zach," said forward and fellow Montreal Canadiens prospect Charles Hudon. "I played with him peewee and bantam (in Boisbriand, Que.) and he had the same swagger. "He was always cocky. It was a good for him and I think the crowd loved it too." "It was unbelievable standing on the blue-line at the end of the game with the fans chanting Fucale," said McDavid. "I had chills and it wasnt for me, so I cant imagine how he felt. "You see a lot of goalies and theyre pretty weird. They have their routines and you cant talk to them, but hes really relaxed and honestly, he does have that swagger." Canada also got a boost with the return of big defenceman Griffin Reinhart after serving a four-game suspension for a slash at last years world juniors. Reinhart was counted on to be the leader on defence and he showed it with 20 minutes of ice time, mostly paired with Matt Dumba. He finally got to play at a world juniors with his younger brother, forward Sam Reinhart. The two were on the ice together a lot, especially while penalty killing. LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Hannah Miller and Rebecca Leslie each had a goal and an assist as Canada held on to beat the United States 3-2 Friday in a womens under-18 exhibition hockey game. Breanne Wilson-Bennett and Leslie scored in the first period to give Canada an early lead, and Miller made it 3-0 at 7:54 of the third period. Maliya Rodgers and Lexie Laing replied for the Americans to make the game close. "I thought we came out flying, we played a good first period," Canada head coach Laura Schuler said. "We talked about how the U.S. would be coming out hungrier, having played one game against us and knowing what we were going to throw at them. So we had to be prepared for that and I think we did a really good job." Kassidy Sauve stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Canadians. "Our goalie came up pretty big with some really nice saves for us," Schuler said. Maddie Rooney made 31 saves for the United States. Canada has won the first two games of the three-game series between the rivals. The final game is Sunday morning. "We just need to keep with out game plan, play calm and keep doing what were doing," Leslie said. "The Americans have a really good team, but weve been working hard, battling as hard as we can and finishing really well." The games are part of Canadas preparation for the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Womens World Championship next April. Schuler is getting her first look at the potential Canada team in Lake Placid, and is liking how the players are coming together. "One of the things were doing as a coaching staff is making sure everyone has a role on the team, Schuler said. "I think when you do that it really helps to build team chemistry." The NFL announced Monday that Meriweather will be suspended for this weeks game against the Denver Broncos and the following game against the San Diego Chargers, a severe blow to a struggling defence as the Redskins try to recover from their poor start to the season. Meriweather has the right to appeal. If he does, an expedited hearing will be held this week and a ruling issued before the Broncos game. He was flagged twice for hits on defenceless receivers in Sundays 45-41 win over the Chicago Bears, in the third quarter for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Alshon Jeffery in the fourth quarter for a helmet-first hit to the head and neck area of Brandon Marshall. In announcing the suspension, the league cited Meriweathers status as a repeat offender. He was fined $42,000 for a helmet-first hit on Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy in Week 2, forcing Lacy out of the game with a concussion. Later in that same game, another helmet-first hit left Meriweather with a concussion, knocking him out of the game. The two-game suspension will cost Meriweather $141,176 in salary. He will not be allowed to participate in any football activities with the team during the suspension. Meriweather said after Sundays game that he thought both hits against the Bears were legal. He said hes tried to change his game to suit the NFLs tackling rules. "I wasnt trying to be dirty. I wasnt trying to hurt nobody," he said. "I didnnt lead with my, didnt launch with my head.dddddddddddd I used my shoulder like they told me to do." Coach Mike Shanahan said earlier Monday that he didnt think Meriweather would be suspended. "I think he knows exactly what he has to do," Shanahan said. "And sometimes the intent -- theres no intent there -- sometimes you hit a guy a little bit higher than anticipated. Even the last one, he came to the sideline and says, Hey, one guy told me it was a good hit and the other official told me he saw it differently. So theres a lot of different interpretations of it, and at the end of the day well find out." The suspension could leave the Redskins without their two starting safeties when they face Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Strong safety Reed Doughty suffered a concussion Sunday when the Bears attempted an onside kick in the fourth quarter. He will have to pass the leagues required tests before he can be cleared to play next week at Denver. The Redskins are already thin at safety. Rookie Phillip Thomas was lost for the season with an injury during training camp, and rookie Bacarri Rambo lost his starting job after struggling in the first two games. The only other safeties on the roster are Jose Gumbs, who has played in two NFL games, and Trenton Robinson, who was signed last week. Washington is ranked 24th in the NFL against the pass and gave up 24 second-half points Sunday against a backup quarterback. Shanahan was asked how he would manage if he doesnt have Meriweather and Doughty. "Not a whole lot you can do about it," Shanahan said, "except prepare the best way you can." LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Blake Griffin had 30 points and 12 rebounds, J.J. Redick added 26 points and the Los Angeles Clippers rallied to beat the short-handed Brooklyn Nets 110-103 Saturday night, improving to 5-0 at home. DeAndre Jordan had 16 rebounds, Chris Paul added 12 points and 13 assists, and Jamal Crawford had seven of his 13 points in the fourth for the Clippers, who kept the Nets winless against them in Los Angeles since Nov. 15, 2010. The Nets played without injured starters Kevin Garnett, Brook Lopez, Paul Pierce and Deron Williams, leaving Joe Johnson as the only regular in the lineup. Still, the Clippers had to hold off an inspired bunch of subs who were coming off an overtime win at Phoenix a night earlier. Andray Blatche and Mason Plumlee scored 19 points each, and Alan Anderson had 15 for the Nets, who fell to 1-5 on the road under rookie coach Jason Kidd. The anticipated reunion of new Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers and his former Boston stars Garnett and Pierce was scuttled. Neither of the Nets players was at the game. The trio teamed to lead the Celtics to the 2008 NBA championship. Byron Mullens and Crawford hit 3-pointers early in the fourth, when the Clippers led by six. The Nets got within three points three times before Johnsons jump hook cut their deficit to 93-92 with 4:12 left. Redick and Paul sandwiched 3-pointers around a free throw by Griffin to stay ahead, 100-94. Johnsons running bank shot pulled the Nets to 104-101 with 36 seconds to go, but Jordan dunked and the Clippers finished the game off at the line. Brooklyn opened the third with 10 straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Anderson, to go up 65-54. The Clippers staged a furious rally, outscoring the Nets 20-2 in a run that had three 3-pointers — two by Redick and another from Mullens — for their first lead, 74-67, since the end of the opening quarter. Redick scored 10 points and Mullens and Griffin added five each. Griffin blocked Plumlee at Brooklyns end and scored at the other end, getting fouled and hitting the free throw. Paul tossed up an alley-oop that Griffin threw down to ignite the sellout crowd. But the Nets closed with a 9-2 spurt to trail 76-75 going into the fourth. The Nets led 55-54 at halftime after blowing nearly all of a 10-point lead while being outscored 10-1 over the final 2:12. Paul scored five straight points and his steal led to a fast-break layup by Griffin, who got fouled and made the free throw. NOTES: Garnett and Lopez have ankle injuries; Pierce has a groin injury; and Williams sprained his left ankle in Friday nights overtime win at Phoenix. Reserve F Andrei Kirilenko was out with back spasms. ... In the Nets six losses, theyve been outscored in the paint. The Clippers had a 44-38 edge. ... Paul has had at least 10 points and 10 assists in 10 straight games to start the season. ... Nets F Reggie Evans had 11 rebounds against his old team. ... Ibrahimovic, who also helped set up the other goal for Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi, has scored 22 league goals and is closing in on his career-best total of 30 from last season. At this pace, he is on course to get 50 goals in all competitions. "It was a good game. It wasnt easy to play on this pitch because it wasnt in a good state," said Ibrahimovic, who scored twice in the 4-0 rout of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday. "I feel good, very good physically. I dont know how far we can go but I hope the team keeps on playing like this, and well see what we can win." PSG is finding its best form again at just the right time and next faces bitter rival Marseille at home next weekend. "Weve scored a lot of goals in one week. It shows our attacking talent and its going to be very hard to catch us," PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi said. "Now we can recover properly before the Marseille game." Toulouse coach Alain Casanova promised to attack and was true to his word, with lively striker Wissam Ben Yedder scoring twice to set up a nervous finish before Ibrahimovic converted his second penalty of the match in the last minute. "We didnt play particularly well, because the players were a bit tired (after Tuesday night)," PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. "We didnt create an enormous amount of chances but we took them, and when you score four goals the coach can only be happy." Meanwhile, Lille fell further behind the top two after a dour 0-0 draw with Lille. Third-place Lille is 10 points behind Monaco and one point ahead of fourth-place Saint-Etienne, while Lyon is five points behind Lille in sixth place. PSG took the lead in the 33rd minute when Serbian defender Uros Spajic brought down Lavezzi, and Ibrahimovic drilled his spot kick down the middle with goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher guessing wrong as he dived to his right.dddddddddddd PSG should have scored again in the 43rd when Ibrahimovic crossed from the left and centre back Thiago Silva failed to hit the target as he lunged in at the far post. A minute later, Toulouse punished PSG for that miss when Ben Yedder volleyed in a cross from midfielder Etienne Didot. But PSG regained the lead in the 56th when Ibrahimovic again crossed from the left, Matuidi let the ball run and Lavezzi finished with a first-time shot. Ibrahimovic seemed to have put the result beyond doubt in the 70th, heading in substitute Yohan Cabayes free kick after the impressive Lavezzi had been fouled, but sloppy play let Toulouse back into the game three minutes later. After PSG midfielder Thiago Motta went to challenge forward Martin Braithwate, the ball bounced into the penalty area and Ben Yedder beat goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu with a calm finish. Not to be outdone, Ibrahimovic went close with another header from Cabayes free kick — which Boucher kept out — and then scored another penalty after Issiaga Sylla had handled his free kick. Ibrahimovic was lucky, however, as he tried to dink it over Boucher. The goalkeeper saved the shot, only for the rebound to fall kindly into the Sweden forwards path. Hardly anything happened at Lille until the hour mark, when Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes thwarted 18-year-old forward Divock Origi and then tipped away Salomon Kalous cross before it reached striker Nolan Roux. The game finally started to open up and, when Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier clipped the ball over onrushing goalie Vincent Enyeama, defender Pape Souare had to make a goal line clearance. Lopes then made an excellent finger-tip save to push Origis strike from 20 yards onto the bar, and Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette shot straight at Enyeama from a good position. Earlier, struggling Rennes moved nine points away from the relegation zone with an impressive 3-0 win at Nantes, with Sweden forward Ola Toivonen, strike partner Paul-Georges Ntep and Norwegian midfielder Anders Konradsen getting the goals. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Montreals Eugenie Bouchard needed seven match points to secure a tough win over Virginie Razzano of France, 6-2, 7-6 (10) on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open. Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver, seeded 28th, played through severe back pain to claim a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (9), 6-1 victory over Australian Matthew Ebden. You can watch Day 3 coverage today at 1pm et/ 10am pt. Watch Day 4 action live at 7pm et/4pm pt on TSN.ca and on TSN at 10pm et/7pm pt. The Canadian needed treatment three times in the second set and at times looked finished, but the 23-year-old fought on and managed to earn the improbable victory. The back pain has bothered him since the start of the year, forcing him to quit a semifinal in India and pull out of a tournament in Sydney. "Its been lingering, I had to hang tough. Im super-thrilled to get through," said Pospisil, who depended on painkillers to get him to the finish after being told by a physiotherapist that he could go on if he wished. "Midway through the third I was not feeling very good, I took some tablets and 30 minutes later I didnt feel so much." The Canadian next plays eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka after the Swiss beat Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. It will be Pospisils first career appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam. Bouchard will play in the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time after reaching that plateau at Wimbledon last summer. Shes the first Canadian woman to reach the third round at Melbourne since Sonya Jeyaseelan in 2000. The 30th-seeded Bouchard faced a stiff battle against Razzano, whos ranked No. 100 in the world. The Canadian won the first set in 35 minutes but took nearly 90 minutes to win the second. "It was kind of crazy," Bouchard said of the second set. "It became just mental and I just had to fight. Im happy I pulled through in the end. We had some crazy points." "She played some really good points, too, on my match points," Bouchard continued. "It was a battle back and forth. I felt overall I didnt play as well as I know I can. But even if its a bit ugly, still fight and try." Bouchard, 19, is making her main draw debut in Australia after failing to qualify in 2013. She had an early break in the opening set against the Frenchwoman and pulled ahead 5-1. But she lost a break in the seventh game before eventually taking the set on a Razzano double-fault. In the second set, the French player fought off match points and took the set to a tiebreaker. Bouchard finally closed it out with a cross-court winner. Bouchard, who was named The Canadian Press female athlete of the year last month, won with four aces, 25 winners and the same number of unforced errors. "I came into this Slam seeded now for the first time," Bouchard said. "So, of course, my first few rounds Im expected to win. I always expect myself to do well. "I just try to ignore the outside expectations and pressure and really just focus on what I need to do. At the end of the day, I really need to perform. I cant really worry about what people say on the outside." Bouchard had a handful of Aussie fans in matching singlets spelling out "Eugenie" cheering her on. She threw them her towel after the match and had a koala bear doll tossed back as a memento of the evening. She next plays Lauren Davis of the U.S., who beat Germanys Julia Goerges 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. In mens doubles, Torontos Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia opened with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Germans Benjamin Becker and Daniel Brands. The eighth-seeded duo needed just 65 minutes to win with eight aces. In womens doubles, Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Monica Puig of Puerto Rico dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision in their opening match to Spaniards Garbine Muguruza and Arantxa Parra Santonja. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Kansas City Royals are hoping to make another push for a playoff spot, and their latest successful series at Target Field is definitely going to help. Bruce Chen bounced back with a solid start and the Royals earned their fifth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota, sending the slumping Twins to their fifth straight loss. "This was a nice series for us," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "We did everything really well, we pitched well, swung the bats well, played solid defence." The Royals outscored Minnesota 17-3 in the three-game set to finish the season series with a 15-4 record against their AL Central rival. Kansas City has won seven straight at Target Field. "Theyve probably had our number in the past, so its tough to say anything bad about them," said second baseman Chris Getz, who had one of Kansas Citys three RBI singles. Coupled with Oaklands 7-6 loss in Detroit, the Royals are six games back of the As for the ALs second wild-card slot. "I couldnt even tell you whos ahead of us," Yost said. "My focus is if we win everything else takes care of itself." Getting Chen back on track certainly helps. Chen (6-2), who is good at deception and changing speeds, gave up one run and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. In his past two starts, he allowed 13 runs in nine innings. Before those two, he had allowed just three earned runs in 38 2-3 innings over six starts. "I went back and tried to be more aggressive," Chen said. "I wanted to make sure I pound the strike zone." Kelvin Herrera and Will Smith combined for 2 1-3 innings of scoreless relief. Greg Holland pitched a scoreless ninth for his 36th save in 38 chances. "It was a total team effort," Chen said. "We won collectively." The Twins hit just 15 for 91 (.165) in the series. Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which has totalled just six runs during its skid. Minnesota is one game ahead of last-place Chicago in the division. "Its a tough time of the year," said bench coach Terry Steinbach, who filled in when manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the second inning. "They dont call it the Dog Days of August for nothing, and whether youre in first place or last place or somewhere in the middle, as players and as organizations and teams youve got to figure out a way to get through this stuff." Justin Maxwell was hit by a pitch -- the ninth batter plunked this season by Twins starter Samuel Deduno -- and both benches were warned by plate umpire Alan Porter. Gardenhire came out to protest and was tossed for the fourth time this year. Maxwell was hit by a pitch in Wednesday night. Salvador Perez homered twice in that game for the Royals and had a fastball come in high and tight. "I dont think they were trying to hit me on purpose," Maxwell said. "Im just glad it helped lead to a big inning." Getz, Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon singled home runs in the second. Deduno (8-8) allowed three runs in three innings before leaving because of soreness in his right shoulder. An MRI is scheduled for Friday. He said he felt a little pain when trying to throw his fastball hard. "I wanted to be aggressive. Thats when I felt it," he said. "I wanted to keep pitching, but they told me they want to see whats wrong with my shoulder." Deduno had been bothered by biceps tendinitis in his throwing arm earlier this month but told the team he was feeling fine. Dozier homered in the sixth to make it 3-1. His 14th homer tied him with Tim Teufel (1984) for most homers in a season by a Minnesota second baseman. Already playing short-handed because outfielder Oswaldo Arcia was unavailable with a sore wrist, Minnesota lost right fielder Wilkin Ramirez in the fifth inning after he fouled a ball off his left shin. He was scheduled for an MRI later Thursday. NOTES: Minnesota C Joe Mauer, out since Aug. 20 with a concussion, said before the game he is "feeling better," but is not close to returning. "Its not any fun watching, so hopefully I can get back there soon," he said. ... Perez, who was 11 for 22 with four homers and 13 RBIs in his previous five games, did not start. He singled as a pinch hitter in the ninth. ... Ervin Santana (8-7, 3.21 ERA) starts for Kansas City on Friday when the Royals open a three-game series in Toronto. Mark Buehrle (10-7, 4.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays. ... Minnesota opens a weekend series at Texas on Friday with Liam Hendriks (0-2, 6.20 ERA) scheduled to face the Rangers Yu Darvish (12-5, 2.68 ERA). The International Olympic Committee released the official list of bid cities on Friday after the deadline for applications had passed. The candidates -- all previously announced in their own countries -- are: Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Oslo, Norway; and Stockholm. Krakow is bidding jointly with the mountain resort of Jasna in neighbouring Slovakia. Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and Stockholm held the 1912 Games. Oslo hosted the 1952 Winter Olympics. Beijings bid envisions hosting snow events in the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou, while Stockholm plans to have the Alpine skiing in the northern Swedish resort of Are, more than 600 kilometres (400 miles) away. Oslo would hold Alpine events in Lillehammer, which hosted the highly successful 1994 Winter Games. The winning city will be selected in 2015. The IOC said the 2022 field "includes a strong mix of both traditional and developing winter sports markets" and "highlights the keen interest cities around the world have in the games and the lasting benefits and legacy they can bring to a region." The field has twice as many candidates as there were for the 2018 Winter Games, when the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang defeated Munich and Annecy, France. "These cities and their supporters clearly understand the benefits that hosting the games can have and the long lasting legacy that a games can bring to a region," IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement.dddddddddddd "Indeed, while recent games have left an array of sporting, social, economic and other legacies for the local population, many cities that did not go on to win the right to host the games have also noted benefits as a result of their bids." The IOC did not mention that potential 2022 bids from two traditional European winter sports countries were rejected by voters. Last week, voters in Bachs home country of Germany said no to another bid from Munich, citing financial and environmental concerns. In March, Switzerland dropped its candidacy from St. Moritz, the 1928 and 48 host, when voters in the region refused to support it amid concerns over costs and disruption. Fridays announcement marks the first phase of a long bid campaign. The six cities will be invited to a seminar in Lausanne from Dec. 4-6 to participate in an observer program for Februarys Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. The candidates must submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by March 14. The IOC executive board will decide which cities go through to the final round in a meeting next July 8-9. The finalists will have to present their bid documents and financial guarantees by January 2015. An IOC evaluation commission will visit the cities in February and March 2015. The IOC will select the host city by secret ballot on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Islanders dealt Thomas Vanek to the Montreal Canadiens after less than a year on Long Island. In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. With the short-handed Warriors needing help from someone -- anyone -- to stop a three-game skid, ONeal returned from right knee and groin injuries that had sidelined him for four games and put up season highs with 18 points and eight rebounds. It was just enough to help lift Golden State to a 102-101 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night.
