KANSAS CITY, Mo.
Swingman Steve Nash Jersey . -- Matt Garza
pitched eight impressive innings for his first victory in six starts and the
Texas Rangers kept close in the playoff race, beating the Kansas City Royals 3-1
on Saturday night. The Rangers won for only the fifth time in 19 September
games. They remained a half-game behind Cleveland for the second AL wild-card
berth. The Royals, out of the playoffs since winning the 1985 World Series,
dropped 3 1/2 games in back of the Indians. Adrian Beltre got two hits and drove
in a run for Texas. Garza (10-6) was 0-3 with an 8.22 ERA in his first three
September starts. He pitched four-hit ball before giving up Eric Hosmers leadoff
home run in the ninth, and was pulled. Garza struck out five and walked one. He
is 4-5 in 12 starts since the Rangers acquired him on July 22 in a trade with
the Chicago Cubs. After Hosmers 17th homer, Joe Nathan relieved. The Texas
closer struck out two for his 40th save in 43 chances. Nathan posted his 41st
career save against the Royals. opportunities. Jeremy Guthrie (14-12) allowed
three runs and seven hits in six innings. He has permitted six runs and 20 hits
in 14 innings in losing his past two starts. Beltres .374 career batting average
at Kauffman Stadium is the highest for an opposing batter with at least 150
plate appearances. Guthrie gave up a triple to Ian Kinsler to lead off the game.
Kinsler scored on Elvis Andrus groundout. In the third, Guthries control
betrayed him when he walked Andrus and Alex Rios on eight pitches, and both
scored. Beltre bounced an RBI single up the middle and A.J. Pierzynski had a
sacrifice fly. The Royals had only one batter past second base before Hosmers
homer. Jarrod Dyson tripled with two out in the fifth, but was stranded when
Alcides Escobar looked at a called third strike. NOTES: Craig Gentry had three
hits and stole a base for the Rangers. He became the fourth different starting
left fielder in as many games for Texas. The others were David Murphy, Joey
Butler and Jim Adduci. ... Royals RHP James Shields, who starts Sunday, is 10-3
since June 28 after starting the season 2-6.

that were close," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "I just think, right
now, the acquisition cost just doesnt work for us right now. I dont know if I
can quantify how far off or things like that that they might be but I would say
we continue to have dialogue.

Sunday.WIGAN, England -- Wigans Premier League survival hopes took a major hit
by losing 3-2 at home to Swansea on Tuesday, while Manchester City secured its
place in next seasons Champions League with a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
Escaping the bottom three looks a tall order for Wigan now after twice
surrendering the lead at DW Stadium, with Dwight Tiendalli grabbing the
76th-minute winner for Swansea in a helter-skelter second half. Wigan, which has
escaped relegation on the final day in three of the last six seasons, is three
points from safety with two games left -- one of which is away at Arsenal. "We
have never thrown the towel in at this football club and we wont do it this time
round," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. "There are still many twists and
turns ... but obviously today was fantastic opportunity." City, which plays
Wigan in the FA Cup final on Saturday, was celebrating another season of
Champions League football after Edin Dzekos 35th-minute winner at Etihad
Stadium. It guaranteed the deposed champions, who fielded a largely
second-string lineup with this weekend in mind, a top-three finish. "It was a
difficult game because we changed a lot of players, but it was important for us
to win the game," City manager Roberto Mancini said. The two Robertos couldnt be
heading to Wembley in more different mindsets. While Mancini has a fresh and
largely fully fit squad to call upon and no more worries in the league, Martinez
has a whole host of injuries -- and the very real prospect of relegation -- to
contend with. Defender Ronnie Stam sustaining a suspected broken leg after
almost his first touch of the ball capped a frustrating night for Wigan that
began so brightly with Rogerr Espinoza volleying home the opening goal in
first-half injury time.
Steve Nash Jersey. Wigan needed victory to
climb clear of the bottom three and dump Newcastle into the relegation zone but
fell apart after the break, even though James McCarthy regained the lead for the
hosts in the 53rd after Angel Rangel had volleyed Swansea level three minutes
earlier. A defensive error by Gary Caldwell was pounced on by Itay Shechter in
the 59th for Swanseas second equalizer before Wigan pair Shaun Maloney and James
McArthur collided trying to clear a cross, allowing Tiendalli the chance to
sweep home a close-range finish. "You have to accept we shot ourselves in the
foot," said Martinez, who used to manager Swansea. "After the second goal, you
felt the players could not be themselves. The dressing room is really down. "We
have done it (survived against the odds) before and we can do it now -- we can
go anywhere in the Premier League and get the points." Wigan doesnt play Arsenal
until next Tuesday, by which time its three-point deficit to Newcastle, Norwich
and Sunderland could have grown. The likes of Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero,
Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure were all rested by Mancini for the visit of West
Brom but it didnt backfire, with Dzeko making amends for a number of missed
chances by his teammates by guiding home a volley after good work by Carlos
Tevez. City struck the goal frame twice, through Carlos Tevez and James Milner,
in the first half. Sweden striker Markus Rosenberg did likewise for West Brom
after the break. "After 10 minutes, we started to play better and we missed five
incredible chances to score which made it difficult for us in the second half,"
Mancini said.
