.C. -- Chris Thorburn thinks one of the reasons the Winnipeg Jets have been
successful under new coach Paul Maurice is that theyre playing together as a
team.Minnesota Wild 2 Winnipeg Jets 1 – It was game one of five between these
two teams in what is expected to be a very good divisional rivalry. For the Wild
it was their first win of the season and they now have a record of 1-1-2 while
the Jets fall to 2-2. Jets start a six game home stand Friday with another
divisional game, home to the Dallas Stars. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) This is the
first of 10 times this season that the Jets will be playing on consecutive
nights. They are also in a stretch of three in four nights with the New Jersey
at MTS Centre Sunday. Jets were the better of the two teams in the first period
despite being outshot and were tied at one, thanks to a late goal scored while
they were on a five on three power play. Interesting to note that in ten tries
last season, the Jets did not score a goal while on a two man advantage.
Bryan Little (3rd) redirected a Toby Enstrom shot, giving both players a point
in each of the Jets four games this season. The games opening goal went to video
review and it was ruled that Jonas Brodin had the puck go off his glove and in
rather than be intentionally direct it into the net. The game winning goal
came in the second period following an offensive zone face-off win by the Wild.
Ondrej Pavelec, again outstanding, lost his goal stick and after stopping a
sharp angle chance by Torrey Mitchell, felt the play should have been stopped
with the puck under his pad. However, Matt Cooke jammed at Pavelecs pad knocking
the puck into the net.
Shawn McLaws Jersey. Wild outshot the Jets
12-4 in the second and have now outshot their opposition 54-19 in second period
action this season. Jets did create some chances in the third period despite
only five shots on goal, but Josh Harding shut the door to record the win in his
first ever game against the Jets. Final shots were 30-15 in favour of the Wild,
and in post-game interviews Jets players were first to say 15 shots is not good
enough. Evander Kane led the way with four shots, Blake Wheeler was held to
one, while captain Andrew Ladd had none. Coach Claude Noel juggled his top unit
trying to create more offense. Its very difficult to judge the game simply
because of the face-off results. The Jets won only 26% of the draws and as a
result were chasing the puck all night. Mark Scheifele was the best in the
circle winning six of ten face-offs. Bryan Little won only one of 20 tonight, at
times the last two seasons Little would be in the 60% range. Ladd did feel the
team lacked "jump". Coach Noel agreed. "We chased a lot, and never created
much." Kane also mentioned "too many turnovers." The power play went 1-5, while
the penalty kill for the second straight game was perfect, going six for six
against one of the NHLs best power plays. Wild came into the game with five
power play goals on thirteen chances.
