HOUSTON -- Johnny Football has done it again.
Hollis Thompson Jersey . Facing another
problem that could have derailed his football career, Texas A&Ms Heisman
Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel has evaded serious punishment one more
time. Manziel was suspended Wednesday for the first half of the Aggies season
opener against Rice on Saturday for what the school said was an "inadvertent"
violation of NCAA rules involving signing autographs. The quarterback was being
investigated for allegedly accepting money for autographs from memorabilia
brokers, a violation of NCAA rules that could have led to a much longer
suspension. ESPN first reported the allegations against Manziel earlier this
month. The latest problem isnt the first time off-the-field trouble has put
Manziels career in jeopardy. Manziel was arrested last summer after a bar fight
near campus and charged with disorderly conduct, possession of a fake ID and
failure to identify himself to police. It was an incident that put him in danger
of being suspended from school and left him having to earn the starting job in
fall camp. Manziel admitted this June that he failed to identify himself to
police following the altercation. As part of a plea deal, other charges against
the 20-year-old, including disorderly conduct, were dismissed, and it looked as
though Manziels trouble was behind him before the latest problems came to light.
The news of Manziels suspension was the talk of Twitter on Wednesday, with many
questioning the length of the suspension. Former NFL and MLB star Deion Sanders
was incredulous at the brevity of Manziels suspension, after Dez Bryant was
suspended for an entire season while at Oklahoma State after lying about having
dinner with Sanders. "Can we investigate the investigators? (at)DezBryant got
suspended a season 4 lying about a dinner that wasnt a violation & Manziel
gets a half," Sanders tweeted soon after the ruling was made public. The
decision also had a major impact in Las Vegas, where the odds of Manziels
chances of repeating as a Heisman winner and Texas A&Ms chances of winning
the national championship shifted dramatically. RJ Bell, the founder of sports
betting website Pregame.com, said Manziels chances of winning the Heisman jumped
from 12/1 to 6/1, and the teams shot at the title increased from 18/1 to 10/1.
The penalty appears to have brought a quick end to an investigation that could
have ruined the seventh-ranked Aggies season. The school issued a statement
Wednesday saying it declared the Heisman winner ineligible and that the NCAA
agreed to reinstate Manziel after he sits out the first half against the
underdog Owls. "I am proud of the way both Coach Sumlin and Johnny handled this
situation, with integrity and honesty," Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp said
in the statement. "We all take the Aggie Code of Honor very seriously and there
is no evidence that either the university or Johnny violated that code."
According to the statement, Texas A&M and the NCAA "confirmed there is no
evidence Manziel received money in exchange for autographs based on currently
available information and statements by Manziel." Conditions for reinstatement
include Manziel discussing his actions with teammates and A&M revising how
it educates student-athletes about signing autographs. "Student-athletes are
often asked for autographs from fans, but unfortunately, some individuals sole
motivation in seeking an autograph is for resale," said Kevin Lennon, NCAA
vice-president of academic and membership affairs. "It is important that schools
are cognizant and educate student-athletes about situations in which there is a
strong likelihood that the autograph seeker plans to resell the items." Manziel
likely will be replaced for the opening half by either junior Matt Joeckel or
freshman Kenny Hill. Joeckel has thrown only 11 passes in his college career.
Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman last season, setting
numerous school and Southeastern Conference records while leading A&M to an
11-2 mark and a victory over No. 1 Alabama in its first season in the SEC. He
followed that with a high-profile off-season of road trips to Las Vegas and the
NBA Finals. Manziel got to meet Heat star LeBron James and rapper Drake, and he
posted some Tweets that made headlines. His biggest misstep, however, came
during the summer when he departed early from a quarterback camp for high school
players run by the Manning family in Louisiana. Manziel said it was a mutual
decision after he overslept and missed meetings and activities. Dat Nguyen, an
All-America linebacker at Texas A&M in the 1990s and former assistant coach
for the Aggies, lamented Manziels mistakes, but noted what hes done for the
program. "Im a little bit disappointed with whats going on down there," Nguyen
said recently. "Going into the season I thought this would be the year for
A&M to win a national championship and this has been a distraction. He made
a bad decision and hes just got to move on ... but overall the guy has put
A&M back on the map." Former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum, who is now a
special adviser to the schools president, has watched Manziels career with great
interest and is looking forward to seeing how hell follow up his incredible
first season. "This young man has been in a position that no one has ever been
in," Slocum said before the suspension was announced. "Hes been a freshman and a
20-year-old winner of the Heisman Trophy, and hes done some great things with
that and hes had a few things Im sure hed like to have a do-over with. And if I
were advising him, I might have said, Thats probably not in your best interests
to do that or say that or be there, but in terms of the upcoming season, Im as
anxious as anybody to see what happens and see what the results are." Manziel
was the main attraction at SEC Media Days, where he was peppered with questions
but answered with the same cool and calm he often shows in the face of a pass
rush. "I dont feel like Ive done anything thats catastrophic," Manziel said at
the time. "Of course, Ive made my mistakes. Its time to grow up." The day before
the Aggies reported for preseason practice, ESPN reported Manziel signed
thousands of autographs for brokers in Texas, Florida and Connecticut, and cited
unidentified sources who said Manziel was paid thousands for dollars for the
signatures. Manziel has been off-limits to the media since news broke of the
NCAA investigation, but has been practicing with the Aggies.

. The 15th-ranked Canadian men lost the opening two games of their European
tour: 19-15 to No. 17 Georgia and 21-20 to No. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- On the final
turn of the final lap, James Hinchcliffe finally saw an opening -- and made sure
he squeezed into it. Hinchcliffe made a last-ditch move on Takuma Sato, going
past the Japanese driver on the inside of the last bend to win IndyCars Sao
Paulo 300 on Sunday. The Canadian was barely even sure that Sato was finally
behind him by the time the checkered flag went down in front of him. "I dont
think I was sure until after we crossed the line," said Hinchcliffe, who earned
his second victory of the season and his career. "I didnt think we had it. It
wasnt really until I crossed the line that I realized, We got it!" The Canadian,
also the winner in the opener in St. Petersburg, Fla., moved from third to
second with three laps to go and then dueled with Sato before finally making the
gutsy move as right before the finish at the Anhembi street track. Sato, coming
off his first career victory two weeks ago in Long Beach, drove in too hard for
the hairpin at the end of the long back straight and gave just enough space for
Hinchcliffe to get past. "To win a race on the last corner of the last lap is
one of the coolest feelings," Hinchcliffe said. "To make a last-corner pass,
thats something Ill remember for a long time. Takuma was making that race car
really wide and he was defending the inside pretty well. He just outbroke
himself just a little bit and I was able to do a high-low (pass) and got the
win." Sato had successfully defended the lead from Hinchcliffe on two other
occasions during the final laps but couldnt hang on at the end with older tires.
"I think I tried everything I could to defend," Sato said. "I was really
struggling on the grip the last laps. I really had to deal with a lot of things.
The last few laps were great fun from a drivers point of view. Its a real pity
that I lost it on the final lap of the race on the final corner." The last
Canadian to win in Brazil was Greg Moore in 1998. "Obviously, Greg Moore was my
hero growing up," Hinchcliffe said. "When I got to IndyCar, the biggest pressure
I put on myself was to maintain the reputation that Canada has with their
IndyCar drivers. To be able to do that now, not only make it to this level, be
successful at that level. Im proud." Despite losing the race, Sato leaves Brazil
with the lead in the drivers standings. American Marco Andretti, who finished
third Sunday, moved to second for the championship. Helio Castroneves, who led
coming into his home race, had an incident-filled race and finished 13th to drop
to third in the championship. Castroneves Penske teammate Will Power, who won
the previous three races in Brazil buut started only 22nd after a mishap in
qualifying, retired on lap 19 because of an apparent gear shift problem.
Carl Landry 76ers Jersey. Andretti has had an
unusually good start to the season on road and street circuits. It was the
second third-place finish for him this year -- he was also on the podium in St.
Petersburg -- and the result gives him some momentum going into the Indianapolis
500. "I think right now were on par for a great season," he said. "This is what
used to be the tough part of the season for me. Weve been getting some decent
results where I used to struggle, so Im pleased with that." Spaniard Oriol
Servia was fourth in the second-to-last race for Panther DRR racing, which will
not compete after the Indy 500 because of financial difficulties. American Josef
Newgarden, who started last after changing an engine before the race, managed a
fifth-place finish, the best of his career. Pole-sitter and current IndyCar
champion Ryan Hunter-Reay ran up the front for a while but finished only 11th
after a flat tire. Andretti teammate and front-row starter EJ Viso of Venezuela
was sixth. Tony Kanaans impressive weekend despite an injured right hand ended
in disappointment when he ran out of fuel before a pit stop on lap 51 while
running second. After stopping on top of the cross-finish line, he put both
hands on top of his visor in disbelief as fans packing the stands at the
Sambadrome front straight loudly applauded. He finished 21st, three laps back.
"I couldnt believe that something like that happened. I wanted to win this one
for the fans really bad, they supported me all week," he said. "Its tough, but
it happens. I leave with my head up because I know that I did everything that I
could." Powers winless streak was extended to 15 races after his disappointing
weekend in Brazil. The "King of Sao Paulo" was the pre-race favourite after
winning all three previous races at the Anhembi circuit. He dominated the first
two practice sessions on Saturday, but a red flag kept him from posting a fast
lap in qualifying. Power had moved to 11th place by Lap 18 before the mechanical
failure ended his hopes of another victory. "We dont know what happened," Power
said. "I had no real warning, unfortunately. I had such a good car. I was
passing a car a lap." Castroneves came boosted by the best start of his career
after three straight top-10 finishes, but it was a difficult day for the
Brazilian, who got involved in at least three crashes in the 75-lap race. "We
didnt have the race we wanted, everything happened to us," the three-time Indy
500 winner said. "But we have to move on and think about Indy."
