Best pitch of the seriesThe second-day pitch in Indore has shown very little signs of wear and tear. The small cracks that are running all the way through have neither widened nor have the edges loosened up. Even the fast bowlers footmarks are just that - footmarks. The top soil has not disintegrated much either and the signs are visible for the third day to be the best day for batting in this Test.Make the bowlers bowl to youThey say the best batsmen make bowlers bowl where they want them to. Its good to hear and profess, but is it even possible? Virat Kohli showed how its done, in the 92nd over bowled by Matt Henry. The third ball of the over was was outside off and Kohli did not offer a shot. The same sequence repeated on the next ball - outside off and left alone. Henry was forced to rethink his strategy for the fifth ball and he bowled a little closer to Kohli who then closed the face of the bat with a forward lean and collected an easy single through the midwicket region. Why is it tough to play the short ball in India? The two key ingredients while playing the short ball are bounce and pace. Life becomes a lot easier for the batsman if he could trust both of them, for that allows him to make a clear strategy. You could either decide to duck, sway or ride the bounce while defending. On the attacking front also, you could commit to the pull or hook early. In any case, the pull or hook is an instinctive shot and demands an early commitment. On Indian pitches, you can neither trust the bounce nor the pace annd that is why its a little tough to formulate one strategy for all the bouncers bowled to you. Jeff Carter Kings Jersey. One size doesnt fit allThere are a lot of theories about how to play spin. Some say one must always use his feet to go down the pitch, others would tell you sweeping is a must too. Both Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have dominated spin in this game but have followed different strategies. Rahane has stepped down the pitch regularly and has chosen to take the aerial route. On the other hand, Kohli has used a long forward stride and the depth of the crease. Rahane struck four sixes and Kohli none but their strike-rate against spin was almost identical.Maintaining shape while taking the aerial routeRahane has used his feet quite well to both the New Zealand spinners. In his pursuit to go aerial, he has followed a couple of fundamentals of hitting the long ball. He has always gone with the spin and stepped out accordingly to get in the right position. Against Mitchell Santner he stepped away from the line to go inside out, but stepped across against Jeevan Patel to target the leg side. In addition to his footwork, he formed a stable base while going in the air. It is imperative to maintain a stable base and then the shape while and after hitting the ball. Rahane has showed that hitting sixes for a man of small stature is possible if the basics are addressed every time you stepped out. Washington Redskins players and coaches couldnt shake the pit-in-the-stomach feeling after playing to a tie with the Cincinnati Bengals. Claude Giroux Flyers Jersey.A week after a last-minute loss at the Detroit Lions, they went into their bye week 4-3-1 and not quite sure how to feel. The Redskins sit in last place in the unexpectedly strong NFC East, and uncertainty about situational defense, red zone offense and a four-game suspension to Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has them feeling uneasy. Were not in a great position, but were not in a bad position right now at 4-3-1, linebacker Ryan Kerrigan said. Were still over .500 and we know were still right in the thick of things with the NFC East and weve still got a bunch of NFC East games left. Were right there, weve just got to find a way to get healthy over the bye week and then come back and win some pretty big games.Coach Jay Gruden called being in last place a little disappointing, a description that just about sums up Washingtons first half -- even after quarterback Kirk Cousins led a four-game winning streak to climb out of an 0-2 hole. The upcoming schedule of games against the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals makes it a perilous situation. The climb back to the playoffs is more difficult because the Redskins have to face those four opponents without Williams, suspended four games for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy. Its Williams second four-game suspension after serving one in 2011, only this time itll force Ty Nsekhe into important duty for a crucial stretch.Keeping the running game clicking without Williams is a substantial challenge, though the bigger one may be splitting up carries between fumble-prone starter Matt Jones, undrafted rookie Robert Kelley, third-down back Chris Thompson and even preseason favorite Mack Brown. Jones missed the Bengals game with a knee injury and even if healthy may not shoulder the load anymore. If we had a clear-cut, No. 1 guy, it would be different, Gruden said. I think we have four really good backs. Its just a matter of you only have one ball.We have five, six, seven really good receivers and tight ends and we just have to distribute the ball properly and try to keep everybody off-balance with our running game and passing game.Finding balance is all well and good, but the Redskins would really like to find the end zone more. At 40 percent efficiency, theyre second-last in the NFL, despite having difficult-to-cover tight end Jordan Reed and receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon to throw to.We have to get better in the red zone, without a doubt, Gruden said. Were not going to concede to anything. We understand the importance of the red zone and converting drives into touchdowns. Whether its run or pass, weve got to take a long look at it and find our best ways to get the ball to our best weapons down there and convert. On the other side of the ball, Washington is 29th in third-down defense. Gruden said thats part of the situational football the Redskins will try to get better at coming out of the bye.Effort isnt the question. Execution is.Im sure there will be a lot of things we can correct, but I think the more we play together, the better we are, linebacker Will Compton said.Gruden sees coachable fixes to problems, and Kerrigan believes the Redskins still have their best ahead of them. They have to if theyre going to repeat as a playoff team.Nothings going to get easier, defensive end Chris Baker said. Weve got a lot of great opponents coming up, so weve just got to heal our bodies up and get a chance to get away from football this week. Amid all the turbulence that is Serena Williams swirling life, remarkably, one thing hasnt changed for 183 consecutive weeks: her status as the WTAs No. Zach Parise Wild Jersey Authentic . 1-ranked player. On Feb. 18, 2013, Williams quietly regained that status from Victoria Azarenka, and despite all the dramatic shifts and twists in her recent tennis trajectory, the 34-year-old hasnt relinquished that lofty position. But looming this week in Cincinnati is a credible threat to her long run at No. 1.After a shocking early exit in the Rio Olympics, Williams surprised many tennis observers by accepting a wild card into Cincinnati, which is a Premier 5 event for women.Monday, she abruptly announced she was pulling out of the tournament.Im very disappointed Im not able to compete in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, as I was really looking forward to defending my title, Williams said in a statement. My shoulder inflammation continues to be a challenge, but I am anxious to return to the court as soon as possible. If No. 2-ranked Angelique Kerber wins the title in Cincinnati -- a reasonably plausible outcome given the shape of the draw -- she would become the new No. 1. Hows that for late summer drama heading into the US Open?If Kerber doesnt win the Western and Southern Open, Williams would still be in position to set the all-time record for consecutive weeks at No. 1. From 1987-91, Steffi Graf put together a streak of 186 straight weeks. If Williams wins the US Open, she would break two gargantuan Graf marks in a single swoop. The two are currently tied with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, the Open era record. Its difficult to assess the state of Williams game following her third-round loss to Elina Svitolina at the Olympics. For starters, she has played only three matches since winning Wimbledon. In Rio, Serena was serving well below her typical speeds and appeared to be nursing a shoulder injury. Emotionally, she seemed to be struggling the same way she did at last years US Open, during which she saw her bid for a single-season Slam evaporate in the semifinals. If Williams had played in Cincinnati, in the event of a Kerber title, she would have needed to get to the quarters to stay at No. 1. That might have been dicey, given that she could have met dangerous Karolina Pliskova in the third round. Pliskova (360 aces) and Williams (260) are first and second among WTA players.Kerber is in form, having reached the Olympic final before falling to Monica Puig. Earlier this year, Kerber won her first Grand Slam singles title -- beating Williams in a three-set final at the Australian Open.Sixteen of the top 20 women are scheduled to play in Cincinnati, and one that bears particular attention is No. 4-ranked Simona Halep. She won the title in Montreal before skipping the Olympics, citing health fears. So while Williams, Kerber and most of the other top players traveled to Rio and back -- some encountered long travel delays -- Halep was working out with coach Darren Cahill and trainer Gil Reyes. Will that chance to reset give her an advantage in Cincinnati and, going forward, in New York? The more pressing question, of course, is Serenas situation going into the US Open, an event she has won six times. In addition to that singles loss in Rio, there was a devastating doubles failure, too. Serena and older sister Venus had won all 15 of their career Olympic doubles matches and had brought home three gold medals. But in the first round, they fell to the Czech Republic team of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-4.For years, the Williams sisters have defied the gravity that eventually brings down 30-something professional tennis players. But that doubles defeat dramatically underlined the concept that their time of invincibility is past. Hard to believe, but Venus and Serena have a combined 70 years on the planet.Serenas first turn on top came more than 14 year ago, in 2002, when she supplanted Venus. Between then and now, 10 different women have occupied the No. 1 spot. In that time, Kim Clijsters and Justin Henin retired not once, but twice. Lindsay Davenport and Amelie Mauresmo also moved on.Serbs Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic are still playing, but their reign lasted only a combined 29 weeks. Caroline Wozniackis lasted 18 weeks. And whatever happened to Dinara Safina? The two No. 1s before Serena -- Azarenka (pregnant) and Maria Sharapova (serving a drug ban) -- are both out of tennis at the moment.Serena, meanwhile, has rolled along for 3? years. In a weeks time, that magnificent run at No. 1 could be over. Jared Spurgeon Wild Jersey Authentic . The Browns coaching search remains incomplete. Darcy Kuemper Wild Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- The surging Texas Rangers passed their latest test in resiliency, reaching the midpoint of their season on a resounding note. Dan Hamhuis Stars Jersey .Ian Desmond homered to lead off the 10th inning for Texas, and the Rangers held on for a 3-2 victory Friday night over the Minnesota Twins.Theres nothing wrong with a little adversity, especially to kind of see what were made of, said Desmond, who leads the majors this season with five go-ahead home runs in the seventh inning or later. After losing back-to-back games to the Yankees in New York on the last at-bat, including a six-run rally Wednesday against relievers Matt Bush and Sam Dyson, the league-leading Rangers improved to 18-6 in one-run decisions this year.Sometimes theyre gifts. They show us what are flaws are, manager Jeff Banister said.Dyson surrendered a leadoff single in the 10th, but he struck out the next two batters and notched his 17th save in 19 attempts. Bush (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, which lifted the Rangers to a club-record 52-29 at the 81-game mark. Its a good number. Its a much better number than being the other way around, Banister said. Were not going to toast to halfway.Flip their record, and its still three games better than the Twins (25-54).Trevor Plouffe tied the game for the Twins with a two-run home run in the seventh that spoiled Martin Perezs shutout bid, but Desmond took Fernando Abad (1-3) deep to start the extra session. Abad has taken the loss in three of his last four appearances.Obviously that fastball wasnt where he wanted it, Twins manager Paul Molitor said.Ervin Santana turned in his third straight sturdy start for the Twins, though he needed 117 pitches to log 6 1/3 innings. Two of his three walks came in the seventh, when pinch-hitter Jurickson Profar put the Rangers in front with a two-run single off reliever Ryan Pressly. Santana struck out five and allowed only three hits.Perez retired the first 10 batters he faced and finished the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with double plays. In the fifth, after Max Kepler sacrificed to move the runners up to second and third, Kurt Suzuki tried to bunt, too. Plouffe broke for home with the pitch, but the ball popped high enough in the air for first baseman Mitch Moreland to catch it and throw across the diamond for an easy out. Just the type of ugly mistakes that have made a bad season much worse for the Twins. It didnt work out. We didnt get the ball down, Molitor said.Throwing strong in his first full season since Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his elbow, Perez hasnt lost in eight starts. The left-hander allowed five hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out three, taking his second no-decision during that span.IAN IS IN A GROOVEDesmond, in his first season with the Rangers, leads the majors with 34 multi-hit games. He hit .358 in June and is tied for the team lead in homers (15) and RBI (52), making quite the case for the All-Star team.He just continues to impress us every single night he goes out there, Banister said.DOZIERS DRIVESBrian Dozier singled before Plouffes homer, stretching his hitting streak to a career-high 13 consecutive games during which hes hitting .431 with 12 extra-base hits and 13 RBI. Doziers run of 11 games in a row with at least one extra-base hit ended as the longest in a single season in the majors since Chipper Jones had 14 straight in 2006, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.TRAINERS ROOMRangers: RHP Yu Darvish (shoulder) took another step toward returning to the rotation, throwing a smooth bullpen session before the game. Hell start a rehab assignment Monday with Double-A Frisco. RHP Keone Kela (elbow) could be back in the bullpen after the All-Star break. Fantasy hockey is not above dualism. While we had a rough week in mid-November in which fantasy superstars were injured left, right and center, this past week seems to have made up for the negativity. We saw both Taylor Hall and Johnny Gaudreau return earlier than anticipated from their injuries, in addition to the return of Alexander Steen and Jack Eichel. Thats not to mention the return of less-heralded contributors Chris Kunitz and Bryan Little. Heres more on the fantasy impact of each respective players return:Hall returned to a team that had recently found a scoring line groove featuring Travis Zajac, Michael Cammalleri and Kyle Palmieri. That allowed Hall to play on a second line with Adam Henrique and P.A. Parenteau. Hall notched a goal and two assists -- including a helper on Cammalleris overtime winner -- as the Devils clawed their way back to beat the Nashville Predators on Saturday. These two line combinations look very friendly to fantasy owners and, outside of Hall and Palmieri, the four other forwards are available in 37 percent or more of ESPN leagues.Gaudreau returned with a flourish, and has given coach Glen Gulutzan plenty to think about going forward. In an effort to ease Gaudreau back into the lineup, he returned to the second line instead of the first. The result? The Flames exploded for eight goals against the Anaheim Ducks. Gaudreau looked inspired playing with Sam Bennett and Alex Chiasson. Including power-play points, the trio combined for eight points in the win. Meanwhile, Sean Monahan, Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg stayed involved, accounting for six points of their own. Perhaps the solution all along to the early-season doldrums of Gaudreau and Monahan was to separate them. Well have to wait to see if Gulutzan keeps them apart; if so, that changes how we view those other forwards in fantasy.Steen took off a couple of weeks with an undisclosed upper-body injury, which wed wager had something to do with his offseason shoulder surgery that originally came with a timetable for a December return. As we know, he returned in time for the start of the season -- the early end of his recovery schedule -- and struggled through the first month and a half of the campaign. Now two games back, Steen has four points and is flying on a line with Vladimir Tarasenko and Robby Fabbri. Heres hoping his return from an injury, coupled with a return to form, means hes healthy and back in business for fantasy owners.Eichel returned to the Sabres on Tuesday and had two points in his season debut. He followed it up with a two-goal performance on Thursday, before finally being silenced on Saturday against the Boston Bruins. Still, the quality performances in his return signal good times ahead for the fantasy owners. Sam Reinhart and Evander Kane are playing with Eichel at even strength, while Reinhart, Ryan OReilly and Kyle Okposo join him on the power play. That should give owners a good idea of who to consider while Eichel helps drive production for his teammates.Kunitz missed six games with a lower-body injury and was back on the ice Saturday with Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel. His fantasy contributions may be muted while compared to a few seasons ago, but dont underestimate his periphery stats. Last season was far from a banner campaign for Kunitz, yet he finished among the top 100 fantasy skaters on the ESPN Player Rater. Hes available in 75 percent of ESPN leagues.Littles return gives the Winnipeg Jets a much more legitimate No. 1 and No. 2 center combination, assuming Mark Scheifeles injury is short term. When Little and Scheifele were in the lineup together briefly last week, it was Scheifele with fellow youngsters Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers, while Little was flanked by Blake Wheeler and Drew Stafford. With Scheifele out the past two games, Little is playing with Laine and Ehlers. The result has been four points in four games for Little. While he was drafted late (179.7 ADP), Little was drafted in most leagues for a reason. Hes now available in 60 percent of ESPN leagues following his extended absence.Forwards rising and fallingLeon Draisaitl, C, Edmonton Oilers (up 22 spots to No. 183): Our bad. It turns out that nobody should be declared dead to us for fantasy in an Oilers lineup that can move a player from third line to Connor McDavids side with the stroke of a pen. Draisaitl, who had quietly sunk into fantasy irrelevance for an entire months stretch from mid-October to mid-November, is back in business and racking up points next to McDavid on the top line. Weve seen a gamut of wingers move in and out of the plum spots next to McDavid, including Jordan Eberle, Milan Lucic, Patrick Maroon, Jesse Puljujarvi and now Draisaitl. If theres one takeaway, it would be that none of the wingers have quite as much value as you might first perrceive, but they have more value than they might otherwise deserve. Jaromir Jagr Jersey. In other words, ride the hot hand and dont drop any of them just because they arent playing with McDavid right now.Josh Bailey, LW/RW, New York Islanders (up 18 spots to No. 218): Already coming on strong as John Tavares settled into a groove, Bailey has maintained his recent hot play as Brock Nelson settled in as the the third member of the top line. Bailey has seven points in the past seven games, including a goal and two helpers in the past three with Nelson at his side. Bailey can keep up respectable scoring numbers as a member of the top line, a status which will not be in question this season.Defensemen rising and fallingTorey Krug, D, Boston Bruins (up 22 spots to No. 97): Patience has paid off for Krug owners, with the Bruins top rearguard getting back down to business of late. Hes peeled off just shy of two-thirds of his points this season in the past eight games alone. We knew the dam would break for Krug eventually, as he has been playing all the important minutes and driving more than enough offense at the opposing net. Although teammate Patrice Bergeron still slides a bit on our rankings this week, we expect a similar turnaround for him sooner than later.Dougie Hamilton, D, Calgary Flames (up 25 spots to No. 164): Its been a little over three weeks since Hamilton switched defense partners and started playing with Mark Giordano on a regular basis. So its no coincidence that Hamilton is the No. 2 fantasy defenseman overall in the past 15 days. Playing more minutes, taking more shots and getting enough points to make a difference has Hamilton behind only Brent Burns on the ESPN Player Rater for the past 15 days among defensemen. Hamilton has been on a see-saw in our rankings this season, as we try to cling to hopes of a breakout campaign. His play in recent weeks may be indicative that the breakout will stick.Goaltenders rising and fallingCam Ward, G, Carolina Hurricanes (up 13 spots to No. 140): This run of exceptional ratios from Ward of late came as no surprise, as the Hurricanes were playing a dominant possession game against opponents since the start of the season. A little bad luck and a bad bounce here or there led to Ward struggling out of the gates. But after posting a 3.64 goals-against average in October, Ward just closed the books on a November with a 1.74 GAA. The goal support will be lacking for his wins column at times, but overall Ward makes a nice addition to your fantasy tandem -- and hes available in 60 percent of ESPN leagues.Steve Mason, G, Philadelphia Flyers (up 31 spots to No. 190): Masons numbers while Michal Neuvirth was healthy and competing with him for starts: a 2-5-2 record, with a 3.56 goals-against average and .874 save percentage. Masons numbers since Neuvirth was injured and hes had the crease all to himself: a 7-3-1 record, with a 2.14 GAA and .927 save percentage. Some guys are better being pushed, some guys are better when they know the job is theirs to keep. Put Mason in the latter camp, and get him on your fantasy rosters while Neuvirth remains out of the picture.Quick hitsWith Corey Crawford sidelined for up to three weeks, his owners should feel comfortable leaning on backup Scott Darling. The Chicago Blackhawks two losses this past weekend likely have more to do with missing Jonathan Toews than Darlings presence in the crease.Speaking of Toews, he hit the injured reserve with his back ailment, but it doesnt sound like hes expected to miss much beyond another week. Marian Hossa owners can bench him in shallower leagues until Toews returns.Rickard Rakell is on the shelf for the Anaheim Ducks, which means Nick Ritchie gets another run on the top line with Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. If we get word that Rakell will miss more than a couple games, Ritchie becomes interesting as a short-term asset. The Los Angeles Kings are giving Marian Gaborik every opportunity to succeed, placing him on the top line with Anze Kopitar and Trevor Lewis. Gaborik has a couple of assists to show for his efforts in four games, and has 14 shots in the past three of those games. His ice time has also increased every outing and was at a nice 17:25 in Sundays matchup.Top 250 rankingsHere are the updated rest-of-season, top 250 rankings of forwards, defensemen and goalies, including position ranks.Note: Sean Allens top 250 players are ranked for their expected performance in ESPN standard leagues from this point on. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams had plenty of reasons to be disappointed while his team fell behind by 15 points at Michigan. There was also a lot time left.I didnt think we were playing hard, I didnt think we were playing tough. Virginia Tech trailed 23-8 in the first half and 62-52 with 7:23 left in the second.Playing their fourth straight game away from home, the Hokies (6-1) were down 67-63 before a 3-pointer by Justin Bibbs started an 8-0 run. Seth Allen gave Virginia Tech the lead with a driving layup , then added a 3-pointer.Duncan Robinsons 3-pointer with 42 seconds left pulled Michigan (5-2) to within a point, and an offensive foul on Allen gave the Wolverines the ball back. But Michigan was out of timeouts, and Zak Irvin ended up trying a tough jumper from just inside the arc that missed. We were trying to isolate him, and they took him away a little bit, Wolverines coach John Beilein said. NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders are playing their best hockey of the season, and theyre doing it against some of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Scott Stevens Jersey .Andrew Ladd scored in the second period and Jaroslav Halak stopped 36 shots to lead the Islanders to a 4-2 victory over the crosstown-rival Rangers on Tuesday night. John Tavares, Jason Chimera and Scott Mayfield also scored at Barclays Center to help the last-place Islanders improve to 4-0-1 in their last five games. Were playing a lot better hockey and we know we can still be a lot better so I think thats really the mindset, Tavares said. Lot of games here before Christmas. ... We know we can still do a lot of good things `til then. Were just starting the second quarter of the season. The Islanders last three wins have come against defending champion Pittsburgh and the Rangers -- tied atop the Metropolitan Division -- and Washington, which sits in one of the conferences wild-card spots. No secret if you want to make the playoffs, be a good team, you gotta beat some of the top teams in the league and certainly being able to do that has been big for us, Tavares said. Even though there still needs to be a lot of improvement, I think we all recognize theres some good building blocks going.Jimmy Vesey and Marc Staal scored for the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 28 saves. The Rangers have alternated wins and losses in regulation in their last eight games.I think its important for us not to look for any excuses and try to be there every night as good as we can, said Lundqvist, who fell to 1-6-1 in his last eight against the Islanders. Just have to dig a little deeper to get there. The Rangers went 0 for 6 on the power play, including a 6-on-3 advantage with Lundqvist pulled over the final 32 seconds. You gotta score those timely goals and we didnt do it tonight, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. We had the looks. I thought we battled hard. We tried to come back but their goalie without a doubt was the best player on the ice tonight and we didnt finish on our opportunities. After the Islanders took a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Rangers twice pulled within one but couldnt tie it before falling behind by two again.Vesey knocked in the rebound of a shot by Rick Nash for the rookies ninth just 56 seconds into the second to cut the deficit in half. The Islanders restored their two-goal lead 1:22 later when Shane Prince drove the net and had the puck poked away by Lundqvist. It went right to Ladd, who fired it in for his third.Staal pulled the Rangers to 3-2 when he took a pass from J.T. Miller on a 4-on-2 rush and fired it by Halak from the right faceoff dot for his third at 8:54. The assist gave Miller a team-high 20 points on the season.Tavares restored the Islanders two-goal lead off a pass from Josh Bailey from the top of the right faceoff circle on the power play for his seventh with 8:47 left in the third. Its always important to win games, Halak said. Beating the division rivals, its always huge for us, its always a four-point game. Coming out with two points against the Rangers is always a fun game to play. The Islanders were outshot 16-9 in the first period but took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.Mayfield got his first of the season in his third game as he took a pass from Cal Clutterbuck and fired a slap shot from near the boards outside the right faceoff circle past a screened Lundqvist at 7:03.The Rangers Matt Puempel was down on the ice for several minutes and left due to a concussion after taking a high stick from the Islanders Brock Nelson, who was whistled for a double-minor. The Rangers controlled the play for most of the four-minute power-play, firing eight shots at Halak, who stopped them all.Just as the penalty was expiring, Chimera brought the puck up the ice, waited for Nelson to join the play out of the box and sent the puck to him at the right side. Nelson skated up and fired a shot that bounced around in front, and Chimera knocked it in with 2:36 left for his fourth of the season and third in four games.Game notes The Rangers were without F Michael Grabner, the team-leader with 13 goals, while the former Islander was back in Austria for his grandmothers funeral. ... The Islanders improved to 8-1-2 when scoring at least three goals, 7-0-1 when leading after two periods, and 7-1-3 when scoring first. ... D Mayfield was called up from Bridgeport of the AHL to take the place of Johnny Boychuk, who was scratched due to flu-like symptoms. ... The Islanders had their second sellout of the season, and first since the opener against Anaheim on Oct. 16.UP NEXTRangers: At Winnipeg on Thursday night in the middle game of a three-game road swing.Islanders: Host St. Louis on Thursday night in the finale of a three-game homestand.---Follow Vin Cherwoo at www.twitter.com/VinCherwooAP. PISCATAWAY, N. Alexander Ovechkin Jersey .J. -- As much as Chris Ash wants to move forward quickly after a 2-10 season first season as Rutgers football coach, he knows that he has to spend time looking back, especially at the lowlights. Its not what anybody wants. Im not satisfied with that, Ash said Wednesday. Well evaluate the overall big picture of the offense; special teams have not been very good. Well assess all aspects of the process and identify ways to do better. The Scarlet Knights allowed an average of nearly 38 points a game. They were outgained in total yardage by an average of 168 yards. There were 21 fumbles -- 12 lost -- and the revolving door at the quarterback position was squeezed with 34 sacks, totaling nearly the length of a football field. They finished on a nine-game losing streak, failing to win a contest in the Big Ten Conference.Six starters will return on offense and eight on defense, and despite all the negative publicity from what took place on the field, including four shutouts by a combined 224 points, Ash remains optimistic.I think we have a very positive building, a very positive program, so I dont listen to the negativity thats out there, he said. Im focused on making our players better every single day.Ash said his nine assistants are scheduled to return because he wants continuity and likes the group.Hes returning, too.Every year I learn something and improve, he said about coaching. Before this year, Ash had been an assistant.Ash said hes been intentional in his growth as a head coach. Its been more about time management and how to handle all the responsibilities of a head coach and how to deal with it, he said. Im a guy involved in Xs and Os to a certain extent and want to continue to be so.Ash said his recruiting pitches are being received well.We have a plan, a vision, and good people on board, the former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator said. Its going to take time and effort, but I think (recruits) have really been believing in our plan and have built great relationships with our coaching staff. He said those relationships can help carry the team through down times. While the staff continues with recruiting, Rutgers this week lost a pair of returning quarterbacks. Hayden Rettig and former starter Chris Laviano are transferring. But the program moves forward.I do believe weve built a team that will compete, Ash said. We didnt do that on the scoreboard every week; we got shut out four times and Im not happy with that at all. But is the first year a disappointment or a loss? No its not.Weve done a lot of positive things in this program, he said. But on Saturdays, and I get it, as we move forward Im gonna be judged by wins and losses.---More AP college football http://collegefootball.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-Top25 Nicklas Backstrom Jersey . Last season he converted 38 percent of his 3-pointers.While he tried to work through his ordeal, Davis teammates provided encouragement. They said keep shooting the ball, Davis said. I stay confident. Before beating Pepperdine at home on Wednesday, Long Beach went 0-9 on a road trip during which it traveled 15,125 miles. We played this schedule to get better, Monson said. I think we got better today, but this team needs to reward themselves with some wins.Texas: The Longhorns began the game ranked last in the Big 12 with 42.7 percent field-goal-shooting accuracy. They hit 33.3 percent in the first half against Long Beach and broke loose in the second half to hit 53.8 percent and score 43 points.ADVANTAGE TEXASBefore Saturday, Long Beach State ranked 331st in the nation in 3-point field goal defense, allowing opponents 41 percent accuracy. And no, we wont be giving anything to Florida Georgia Line. The Pre-Halloween Heisman, presented by the Peyton Manning Foundation: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville. In the current issue of the ESPN The Magazine, a handsome young writer who kind of looks like Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst praised the Cardinals quarterback for his otherworldly stats but also warned of the dangers of trying to award the bronzed stiff-armed man before the autumn leaves start changing color. You can read it here. Alas, he did look human for the first time this season Friday night vs. Duke. But double alas, his stats are still crazy and his team is still just a few inches from being undefeated. The Wont Be Invited To The Party Even Though He Should Be Award, presented by me in middle school: Donnel Pumphrey, RB, San Diego State. My 2016 man crush continues to power his way through the record books. On Friday night against Bottom 10 resident Fresno State, he rushed for 220 yards and a pair of TDs, reaching 1,111 yards for the season and leapfrogging LaDainian Tomlinson, Herschel Walker and Archie Griffin to reach eighth on the NCAA all-time rushing list. His fifth 200-yard rushing game tied the Mountain West Conference record and with 62 TDs and 57 rushing TDs he is now one behind Marshall Faulk for the San Diego State school record in each category. The Aztecs still have six regular season games remaining with the high likelihood of both the MWC championship and a bowl bid to be added. Despite all that, his being on a non-Power 5 roster probably will keep him from having a seat on the front row at Decembers Heisman ceremony. Lane Kiffins Alabama offense has now outscored the two places where he served as head coach -- USC and Tennessee -- by a combined score of 101-16. Alabama has scored 11 touchdowns via just its defense and special teams while several FCS teams -- including SEC cohort South Carolina -- havent scored that many TDs on offense. Vandy linebacker Zach Cunningham had 19 tackles against Georgia. Four FBS quarterbacks threw for 400-plus yards during Week 7 ... and two lost. Were going streaking! Oklahoma had its 107th straight sellout, spanning every game of the Bob Stoops era. Iowas win at Purdue was its ninth straight road win, breaking a record set in 1920-23. Thats third best in FCS, behind Alabama, which won its 10th straight, and Ohio State which earned its 20th in a row. Urban Meyer is the first coach to win his first 20 road games at a school since Walter Camp in 1888. Walter Camp?! The Commodores were a 13.5-point underdog on Saturday and hadnt won at Georgia since 2006. Washington State beat UCLA 27-21 but did so without a passing TD, ending its streak at 41 games. OK, yeah, this isnt actually a press conference, but I dont care. You have to watch it.And a Players Press Conference of the Week too! Colorado is 5-2 and is being powered there by running back Phillip Lindsay. Against Arizona State he rumbled for 219 yards and three TDs, becoming the first Buff back to top 200 yards since 2002. Instead of taking all the credit, he brought his entire offensive line with him.Danny Ford Scientific Rocket Quote of the Week: Brian Harsin, Boise State. The Broncos head coach addressed a Statue of Liberty fake-turned TD pass that was run during a tough scrum with Colorado State. Yes, Boise was wearing its 2007 Fiesta Bowl throwback uniforms. But no, thats not why they ran the play. We werent game planning for nostalgia.Remembering Brandon Jackson. Army is having its best season in a long while, routing Lafayette to reach 4-2 on the season and inch closer to its first bowl bid since 2010 and only its sixth ever. The Black Knights continue to play inspired by the memory of teammate Brandon Jackson, their cornerstone defensive back who died in a car accident the night after Armys Week 2 win over Rice. At Michie Stadium, one of college footballs most gorgeous venues, the 28-yard line honors the memory of No. 28.Frank Reich Backup QB Of The Week Award: Conor Rhoda, Minnesota. Mitch Leidner missed his first start in 27 games, so the Gophers looked to Rhoda, a former walk-on, and even went so far as to name him a co-captain for the game. He quietly executed a safe game plan, completing seven passes and one for a score, as Minnesota earned its first Big Ten win of the season, beating Maryland on the road.Comeback of the Week Award, also named for Frank Reich: Texas. We might have to consider renaming this by replacing Frank Reich with Iowa State. The Cyclones led the Horns 6-3 at the half, but Texas came back to win 27-6. No, it wasnt exactly a big comeback. And no, it certainly wasnt the fourth-quarter double-digit collapse weve seen from ISU over the previous two games. So, why is it worthy of this? Because it was the first time in 15 tries that a Charlie Strong-coached Texas team trailed at the break and won. Then again ... Lamar trailed Northwestern State by 15 points in the third quarter and 13 points in the fourth but scored two touchdowns in the final 1:43 of the game, including the clincher with six seconds remaining to win 32-31.Weston Steelhammer Name of the Week: Carson Earp, QB, Lamar. On Saturday he threw for 412 yards and four TDs.The Guy You Should Know About, But Probably Dont: Carlos Henderson, WR, Louisiana Tech. Against UMass he caught a dozen passes for 326 yards and five TDs. Thats a yards per catch average of 27.2! The past two weeks he has racked up 558 yards receiving. The Guy(s) You Used to Know About But Forgot About But You Should Know About Again: Oklahoma. Last week in Flipping The Field we had coaches discussing how to salvage a season when the initial list of preseason goals and expectations have been unexpectedly chainsawed down to a much more humbling set of goals. Those coaches talked about the difference between good teams and bad ones being in their ability to rebound, reset and get back on track. By that measure we can mark the Sooners down as a good team again. After a 1-2 start The OU weve seen the last two weekends is the team we all read and wrote about over the summer, particularly an offense that is back to slinging and flying and scoring points (see: Joe Mixon TD pass vs. Kansas State). The swagger in Norman is back and I think we can all agree that Baker Mayfields bandana and Tweet replies feel a heckuva lot cooler when the scoreboard looks like it does now. Though they might want to run some How To Celebrate drills with their offensive linemen. The Team You Should Know About But Probably Dont: West Virginia. The Eers are still undefeated and (gulp) played some serious defense at Texas Tech. Dana Holgorsen, his hair and a can of Red Bull would like to talk to you about all this Baylor is the Big 12s last chance stuff. The Game You Should Know About But Probably Dont: South Dakota State 19, North Dakota State 17. Thats right, the Bison actually lost, their first defeat in 15 games. They not only lost, they did so in dramatic fashion, and to their archrival. The Jackrabbits, trailing by four with 2:27 left, marched 80 yards in a drive that included a pair of third-down conversions and a 2-yard TD pass on fourth-and-1 with one second remaining. According the ESPNs FPI formula, when that drive began NDSUs win probability was 93.1 percent. Now the Jackrabbits get to take the Dakota Marker back to Brookings ... and if youve seen that marker you know itll take a few dudes to carry it anywhere. The Game You Should Be Psyched For But Probably Arent: BYU at Boise State (Thursday, 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). The Cougars have survived their heartbreak gantlet of September, when they lost to Utah, UCLA and West Virginia by a 2.3 average margin of victory, by winning three straight vs. Toledo, Michigan State and Mississippi State. Now they head to Idaho to face 6-0 14th-ranked Boise. If the Broncos are going to have any hope of crashing the Power 5 Playoff/New Years Six party this will be their last chance to make a nonconference statement.Extra Point: The Auburn Tigers had the weekend off but awoke Saturday morning to the terrible news that Quentin Groves, the programs all-time sacks leader (26) and a key cog in what was then the most successful senior class in Auburn history with 50 wins, had died. Diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome before the 2008 NFL draft, he had surgery to combat the condition, which causes a rapid heartbeat. Hed finished his pro career in 15 and was coaching at Coahoma Community College when he died in his sleep Friday night. The Saturday outpouring of emotion through social media was striking, from former teammates and rivals alike. We should all be so fortunate to impact the lives of so many in such a short period of time, only 32 years of age. After watching tape of the Green Bay Packers, its apparent the teams struggle on offense has multiple layers. From the personnel to the route schemes to the play calling, there is validity in dissecting any of those topics. And I would agree that, in some instances, static formation looks and the isolation routes have created adverse situations for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But theres no doubt Rodgers himself has regressed, specifically in his technique. Below, well examine three areas -- deep-ball efficiency, decision-making on timing routes, and accuracy in a clean pocket -- in which Rodgers has looked like a different quarterback than his 2014 MVP season. Then well propose how he can get each back on track.?Deep-ball efficiencyThe numbersRodgers on passes that travel 20-plus yardsDuring the 2014 season, Rodgers was a master of the deep ball, ranking first in yards per attempt on passes that traveled 20 yards or more in the air. Looking at the numbers from this season, its clear he has taken a major step back. In fact, only Jameis Winston, Brock Osweiller, Blake Bortles and Blaine Gabbert have a worse yards-per-attempt figure than Rodgers on deep passes in 2016. Cheap Jerseys Online. The tapeWhat I saw in 2014: In the example below, from 2014 versus the Atlanta Falcons, the Packers run a sting route versus a deep half safety. Its a deep double move with Jordy Nelson stemming to the corner and then breaking back across the face of the safety to the post. The key here is Rodgers ball placement and technique. With max protection, Rodgers has time to set his base, take a quick crow-hop and step into the throw. That allows Rodgers to follow through on the ball while keeping his shoulders pointed toward the target down the field. These are ideal mechanics to generate power from his core and velocity on an over-the-top release. With Nelson separating from the safety, the result is an absolute dime from Rodgers. Ball on the upfield shoulder. Perfect placement to get six. What I see in 2016:? If No. 2 Ohio State beats Michigan at the Horseshoe on Saturday, things might get a little tricky for the selection committee. Even if the Buckeyes knock off the Wolverines, theyll still need Penn State to lose to Michigan State to win the Big Ten East. If the Nittany Lions win the East and the Big Ten championship game, can the committee take Ohio State without taking the Nittany Lions? Probably not. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The moment Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro saw a gap opening along the offensive line, he raced through it at full speed, slamming into the first offensive player who tried to block him.Vaccaro knocked fullback Sione Houma off his feet and into ball carrier Tim Hightower, who was forced to change course. His momentum lost, Hightower was soon enveloped by the Saints converging defense. The play, which occurred during a training camp practice over the weekend, exemplified Vaccaros description of what its like to play for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who is trying to shore up a unit that was among the NFLs most porous last season. His thing is, its not about scheme. Its about the 11 players you put on that field and how fast youre playing, Vaccaro said.He always tells us, `The only advantage the defense has is fear. All the rules are skewed for the offense to have success, so if they dont fear you, youre not going to win. So if you can fly around, you can play fast -- with a scheme that everybody knows -- you can be successful. The Saints ranked 31st in yards allowed last season with 413.4 per game, effectively cancelling out much of the production of New Orleans second-ranked offense. The Saints are hoping for better results with Allen, who coached the secondary on the Saints 2009 championship team.Technically, Allen is approaching what would be only his second full season as an NFL defensive coordinator. He left New Orleans for his first such post with Denver in 2011, then made an ill-fated decision to become Oaklands head coach in 2012.He rejoined the Saints as a senior assistant after New Orleans had ranked second-to-last in defense in 2014, then took over as coordinator when Rob Ryan was fired 10 games into last season.During his first full offseason in his current post, Allen has been simplifying New Orleans defensive scheme. He also has paid particular attention to organizational details such as substitutions and pre-snap alignment, which head coach Sean Payton repeatedly cited as one of his teams most glaring deficiencies last season.Half the battle is getting the call, getting your alignment ... knowing the call, and playing the defense, Payton said. That obviously has been an emphasis.Allen, who played safety in college at Texas A&M, articulates a clear vision for how he wants his unit to look on the field. We have total control over how fast we play and how hard we play, Allen said. There are going to be times where the offense is going to do some things that might dictate some different matchups; they might catch us in a bad situation. But how we get out of thhose situations is that we have 11 guys hustling to the football. Chris Kunitz Team Canada Jersey. It is really a philosophy and culture of how we are going to play and not as much of what (scheme) we are going to play, Allen added. The Saints expect veteran middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, acquired as a free agent this offseason, to be an ideal fit to lead Allens defense -- not only because of his reputation for grasping defensive concepts and alignments, but also because he agrees that, for a defense, a psychological edge can be more important than a schematic advantage.A lot of times, its more about your mentality as a defensive player and really as a unit than it is about Xs and Os, Laurinaitis said. Every play that the offense draws up is blocked for a touchdown. Every play that we draw up is supposed to be a tackle for a loss. This is all about, how can we play as fast as we can, as physically as we can, Laurinaitis added. Now that Allen has simplified the Saints scheme, however, he expects his players to understand their assignments on both individually and holistically.Third-year outside linebacker Kasim Edebali, whose five sacks ranked second on the club last season, explained Allens approach this way: The last couple years, I was a young player, so I was very worried about my position and what Ive got to do. But coach really preaches that everybody understands whats going on around you, so you really know where you are in the defense and where everybody else is, so you can play smart.Through the first five practices of training camp -- three of them in full pads -- the defense has come up with its share of highlights, from safety Roman Harper stripping running back Mark Ingram to a couple of interceptions of star quarterback Drew Brees. But the Saints offense has produced some big plays as well during 11-on-11 drills.Payton said after Mondays practice that it will take until the first couple of regular-season games to see whether the Saints defense is meeting goals of being better at communicating, thwarting third-down plays and tightening inside its own 20.But he added, I expect us to be, because itll be hard not to be, right?Game notes Payton announced after practice that the Saints have signed veteran offensive lineman Tony Hills, who was with the club for part of last season, and assigned a waived-injured designation to rookie Ryker Mathews. ...
