PHILADELPHIA – Restructuring the Toronto defence was primary in the objectives of Maple Leafs management as they strode into the busiest stage of a lengthy offseason. Danny Salazar Indians Jersey . And on the final day of draft weekend, they took the first step toward doing just that.  Carl Gunnarsson, selected with the 194th overall pick at the draft in Columbus seven years earlier, was dealt to St. Louis on Saturday morning for thick Czech defenceman and longtime Blue, Roman Polak. He is the first addition to a roster that promised to change following another late season meltdown. Adjustment to a mismatched and ineffective back-end was a must for the Leafs, who finished near the league basement defensively last season – yielding more shots against than any other club. Polak, while not an upgrade to the steady, but increasingly over-taxed Gunnarsson, does offer a different kind of presence to the Toronto defence, something brawnier and edgier for head coach Randy Carlyle, if not quite better. Gunnarsson, it was ultimately deemed, could be replaced on the top pairing with something similar internally. "We like our defence individually," general manager Dave Nonis said after the final round of the draft was completed on Saturday afternoon, "[but] we didnt necessarily like how they fit together last year. We wanted to move some pieces and change the look, rebuild it a little bit. I wouldnt say its a major overhaul by doing something like this, but it does give us a different element and its a player we didnt really have." Maybe more significant is how the trade promises to open up further opportunity for the clubs two top guns on defence: Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner. By removing Gunnarsson – who teamed with Dion Phaneuf on left side of the top pair – and adding the right-handed Polak, the Leafs opened up room for Rielly and Gardiner to become more prominent members of the defence. Rielly should move from a place on the bottom pair to something more substantial in the top-four. Gardiner, who led the team in even-strength ice-time, might be the one to replace Gunnarsson on the top pair. "Those guys are going to have to take steps forward," Nonis said of the promising duo. "It might be a lot to ask for Morgan a little bit in his second year, but he made some pretty big strides last year and we would expect that hell take some more next [year]. And I think Jake is a good possibility [of doing the same] as well." Left-handed shots, Rielly and Gardiner were both forced to play the right side often last season – nearly the entire season for the rookie – due to the rarity of right-handed defenders on the Toronto defence (Gardiner, specifically, struggled with the change and eventually had to move back to the left). The addition of the 6-foot-1, 227-pound Polak will ease that glut and allow more options for Carlyle. The Blues, who ranked third in the league defensively a year ago, employed Polak in shutdown capacities as well as on their second-ranked penalty kill. He was known in St. Louis as a fierce, physical competitor willing to play through injury. The 28-year-old, who has two years remaining on a five-year contract ($2.75 million cap hit), led the Blues defence in hits and finished second in blocked shots. "Hes a tough guy to play against," Nonis said of Polak, picked in the sixth round of 2004 Draft. "If you look at the minutes he plays he often plays against teams top players. He is very physical, hes very strong. I think theres a perception that because hes so big hes not mobile, I dont think thats true at all. We think that one of his strengths is his skating ability. Hes going to provide a little bit of edge." The fifth overall pick in 2012, Rielly had a fine first season in Toronto, demonstrating improvement with each passing month. He finished with 27 points in nearly 18 minutes of nightly work, emerging as one of the Leafs top possession players in 73 games. It remains to be seen whether he can climb another rung as a sophomore next season though the organization is certainly hopeful based on all that they saw a year ago. "We are hoping that he improves next year," said Nonis. "He may not. He might go through a year where hes not quite ready to go up the lineup, but were comfortable that hes going to get there and hes going to be an impact player and were going to give him an opportunity to do that." Gardiner, meanwhile, finished a rollercoaster third season on a high. He was easily the teams best defenceman down the stretch of another alarming late season collapse, totaling five goals and 14 points in the final 21 games. "Jakes going to have times where [the media] sitting below me in the press-box will hear me smacking on the wall, but the fact is hes got God-given ability that you just cant teach," Nonis said of the 23-year-old. "I think hes getting the other part of his game under control. The last half of the season the turnovers and some of the mistakes he was making earlier were decreasing … He did come a long way." Nonis expects the Leafs to be active at the outset of free agency on July 1st. He was inclined to add another defenceman to the mix, while stating his acceptance to the status quo if furthers upgrades were unavailable. Gunnarsson had mixed feelings after a five-year stay in Toronto. He received word of the trade shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday morning and was "kind of shocked". "I didnt expect it," he told TSN.ca, still piecing together the emotions of his first trade in the NHL. "Sucks leaving Toronto…its been great." Cleveland Indians Jersey . - The Baltimore Ravens have hired Steve Spagnuolo to be their secondary coach and assistant head coach. Lonnie Chisenhall Indians Jersey . Balotelli was out at dinner with his brother Enoch and came home to discover he had been burgled. The car was later found abandoned. Balotelli wrote Saturday on Twitter: "I feel empty! No emotions .Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chip Kelly is very sure of himself. So when the Eagles coach turns up the smug-meter and starts running a little pompous and egotistical, its just par for the course. That said, something caught my ear at Kellys season-ending press conference, a veiled shot at his general manager Howie Roseman. Kelly said Roseman was good at handling the salary cap, on the surface a compliment to anyone who doesnt understand the inner-workings of the Eagles. To those who do, however, it was a clear shot at Roseman, a glorified money man who has risen through the ranks of the organization and now fashions himself as a football guy despite no prior experience as a player, coach or scout. For me to stand there and say, I think paragraph five of his contract should mean this, instead of this. Thats not my forte, not my strength, Kelly said when queried about his relationship with Roseman. Im not going to delve into that and say, I think his signing bonus should be this, but lets retroactive that and only make it for injury in the third and fourth year. Thats not my strength. I understand it, but thats really what (Roseman) does an outstanding job of that. I think since Ive been here one of the attractive things about this job, there are not cap issues. You dont look at it and go, Oh, my God. Were going to have to cut 12 players because were going to be $40 million over the cap. (Roseman) does an outstanding job of that. Thats his training. To anyone who knows Roseman and what makes him tick, thats as passive aggressive as it gets. Kelly further aggravated his insecure GM when he called now-ousted vice president of player personnel Tom Gamble an outstanding football man. Two different sources who know Roseman well said he was seething after Kellys statements, which marginalized him in the personnel aspect of the business. Kelly is a lot like Jim Harbaugh, though. Its football 24-7 for Chip and the ex-49ers coach and both underestimated the political savvy of their respective general managers. Harbaugh is now at the University of Michigan because of his miscalculations with Trent Baalke and thhis dust-up in Philadelphia could signal the beginning of the end for Kelly with the Eagles. Bob Feller Jersey. Roseman is a shark that probably missed his calling in life, a take-no- prisoners operative in the mold of Rahm Emanuel. At 39, hes the youngest GM in football but dont let his boyish looks fool you, the list of executives who have lost power struggles with him is stunning: Joe Banner, Tom Heckert, Jason Licht, Ryan Grigson, Louis Riddick, and now Gamble. When Kelly made his move, Roseman had his people quickly leak the fact that the New York Jets were looking to talk to him about their vacant general manager position, conveniently leaving out the fact that the Jets did indeed want to talk to Roseman but it was about Eagles pro personnel director Rick Meuller. That little nugget certainly got to Philadelphia owner Jeffrey Lurie, who already considered Roseman his indispensable right-hand man on the football side of things, something that could have been validated by the feigned Jets interest. Gamble, meanwhile, was Kellys most trusted advisor on the football side, a man with nearly 30 years of NFL experience who paid the price for the coachs insolence by being fired on New Years Eve. Described as a mutual parting of the ways, Gamble was actually escorted from the NovaCare complex by security, a high-profile pawn in a game of inside baseball between Roseman and Kelly. A game which Roseman won. It was Gamble who had Kellys ear when it came to talent and the coach was given final say on the 53-man roster when he was hired in 2013, meaning Gamble had more say over who was playing for the Eagles this season than Roseman. And that wasnt about to change because Kelly has little respect for Roseman when it comes to player evaluation. Others have speculated that Roseman was also concerned that Kelly was so popular in the city that he could eventually flex his muscles to oust him and elevate Gamble to GM. A December swoon and a poorly perceived 2014 draft hurt Kellys reputation a bit and Roseman pounced, using that, along with the coachs own hubris, to fortify a power base that will only grow from here. Denver Broncos 1 (31) - Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State; 2 (56) - Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana; 3 (95) - Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan; 5 (156) - Lamin Barrow, OLB. Homer Bailey Reds Jersey . LSU; 6 (207) - Matthew Paradis, OC, Boise State; 7 (242) - Corey Nelson, OLB, Oklahoma Top Picks Analysis: The rich got a little richer as John Elway laced a pair of doubles that could turn out to be much more despite his relatively poor draft positioning. Denver has totally revamped its shaky secondary in the offseason, first adding lockdown corner Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward in free agency before drafting talented Ohio State corner Bradley Roby with the 31st overall pick. Roby had top-20 talent but his stock took a hit because he was inconsistent with the Buckeyes and had a high-profile off-the-field incident days before the draft. Lengthy second-round wide receiver Cody Latimer shapes up as the potential replacement for the departed Eric Decker, while third-round offensive tackle Michael Schofield should provide immediate depth and could turn into a starter down the line if he hits the weight room hard. Best Value Pick: Latimer needs to sharpen his route-running skills but he has a chance to do some special things with Peyton Manning throwing the ball to him. "You just need to get in the hip pocket of Peyton Manning," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said. "What a great situation for this young man. Hes a height/weight specimen. He needs to learn how to run routes and separate from defenders." Questionable Calls: Schofield is probably not athletic enough to play on the edge right now and he lacks the functional football strength to kick inside. There were better options on the board for Elway. Summary: The Broncos helped themselves at two need positions (corner and wide receiver) and generally scored well on the value meter throughout the process. FINAL GRADE: B Undrafted rookie free agent signings: DE Kenny Anunike, Duke; OLB Shaquil Barrett, Colorado State; RB Kapri Bibbs, Colorado State; WR Isaiah Burse, Fresno State; P Steven Clark, Auburn; RB Brennan Clay, Oklahoma; DT Mister Cobble, Michigan State; WR Bennie Fowler, Michigan State; WR Greg Hardin, North Dakota State; DE Greg Latta, Purdue; QB Bryn Renner, North Carolina; OT Aslam Sterling, Kansas; CB Jordan Sullen, Tulane; RB Juwan Thompson, Duke; CB Louis Young, Georgia Tech Kansas City Chiefs 1 (23) - Dee Ford, DE, Auburn; 3 (87) - Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice; 4 (124) - DeAnthony Thomas, RB, Oregon; 5 (163) - Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia; 6 (193) - Zach Fulton, OG, Tennessee; 6 (200) - Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, OT, McGill; Top Picks Analysis: Despite a desperate need for speed at the wide receiver position Kansas City went edge pass rusher at No. 23 overall, taking Auburn defensive end Dee Ford. On paper Ford projects as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense the Chiefs play but Kansas City already has a pair of stars at the position -- Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. The Chiefs didnt have a second-round pick and addressed depth at the cornerback position in the third by adding lengthy Rice cornerback Phillip Gaines, who should fit in as an option behind starters Sean Smith and Brandon Flowers, although Flowers is reportedly on the trading block. Best Value Pick: Fourth-round running back DeAnthony Thomas shapes up as a nice replacement for Dexter McCluster, who left for Tennessee in free agency. The 5-foot-9 Thomas could be an explosive third-down back and an excellent return specialist. Questionable Calls: At just 6-foot-2 and 252 pounds there is no way Ford can play the five-technique in the 3-4 so hes going to be stuck behind both Houston, who is signed through next season, and Hali, who is locked up through 2015, for now. A speedy wide receiver would have been more helpful, at least for 2014. Summary: Ford and Gaines probably wont help all that much until a year or two down the line. The Chiefs seemed to do better in the middle rounds where they got their replacement for McCluster in Thomas, and nabbed a solid developmental quarterback prospect in Aaron Murray. FINAL GRADE: B- Undrafted rookie free agent signings: RB Charcandrick West, Abilene Christian; WR Albert Wilson, Georgia State; RB James Baker, Idaho; OL Ben Gottschalk, SMU; DB David Van Dyke, Tennessee State; S Daniel Sorensen, BYU; RB Joey Demartino, Utah State; LB Ben Johnson, Tennessee-Martin; C Cole Pensick, Nebraska; K Cairo Santos, Tulane; WR Darryl Surgent, Louisiana Lafayette; S Kacy Rodgers, Miami; C Vyncent Jones, Utah; QB Jon Jennings, Saginaw Valley State; DT Kona Schwenke, Notre Dame; G Stetson Burnett, Tulsa; DT Kenneth Carter, Auburn; DE Shawn Shupperd, Eastern Kentucky; CB Tevrin Brandon, Monmouth; OL Will Latu, Abilene Christian; LB Brandon Denmark, Florida A&M Oakland Raiders 1 (5) - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo; 2 (36) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State; 3 (81) - Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State; 4 (107) - Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech; 4 (116) - Keith McGill, CB, Utah; 7 (219) - Travis Carrie, CB, Ohio; 7 (235) - Shelby Harris, DE, Illinois State; 7 (247) - Jonathan Dowling, SS, Western Kentucky Top Pick Analysis: The Raiders are almost always wild cards when it comes to the NFL Draft but the organization took a far more conventional approach in 2014. Oakland didnt waver at No. 5 overall when Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, universally regarded as one of the best four players in the draft, fell to them. The Raiders certainly had bigger needs like quarterback but general manager Reggie McKenzie wasnt spooked by that and stayed true to his board. Oakland was rewarded for its astute work early in the draft when signal caller Derek Carr fell to the second round and was still available at No. 36 overall. "A lot of teams thought he was the best pure thrower in draft," NFL Network Draft analyst Mike Mayock said of Carr. In the third round the Raiders were able to bolster the interior of their offensive line by selecting Mississippi State guard Gabe Jackson, who has a very high football IQ and projects as a starter early in his career. Best Value Pick: Keith McGill, a fourth-round pick out of Utah, is a Brandon Browner-sized cornerback who could excel in press-man coverage, Questionable Calls: There really wasnt much to quibble about in this draft but if you have to take issue with something, look to the seventh round where defensive end Shelby Harris probably wasnt a draftable commodity. Summary: McKenzie seems to be making the most of his third and possibly final chance to turn things around in Oakland. Mack was in the conversation to be the No. 1 overall pick while Carr is a solid developmental prospect at QB and Jackson should be a rather useful addition. DRAFT GRADE: A Undrafted rookie free agent signings: FB Karl Williams, Utah; WR Mike Davis, Texas; TE Scott Simonson, Assumption; RB George Atkinson, Notre Dame; WR D.J. Coles, Virginia Tech; TE Jake Murphy, Utah; OT Danny Kistler, Montana; WR Noel Grigsby, San Jose State LB Carlos Fields, Winston Salem State; DE Austin Flynn, Arkansas; QB Rob Henry, Purdue San Diego Chargers 1 (25) - Jason Verrett, CB, TCU; 2 (50) - Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, Georgia Tech; 3 (89) Chris Watt, OG, Notre Dame; 5 (165) - Ryan Carrethers, NT, Arkansas State; 6 (201) - Marion Grice, RB, Arizona State; 7 (240) - Tevin Reese, WR, Baylor Top Picks Analysis: The Chargers went into this draft hoping to improve on their 29th-ranked and AFC- worst pass defense. TCU cornerback Jason Verrett is undersized at 5-foot-9 but shapes up as a Captain Munnerlyn-type, a player who battles enough to compete on the outside during early downs before moving into the slot and becoming a difference maker on obvious passing downs. San Diego moved up in the second round to take Georgia Tech outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, a high-motored edge player with significant pass rushing upside. In the third round the Chargers took heady Notre Dame offensive guard Chris Watt, a very experienced college player who is a great technician and should develop into a solid starter. Best Value Pick: San Diego needed a true nose tackle and was able to get one in the fourth round by taking Arkansas States Ryan Carrethers, a 340-pound, NFL-Strong two-down player. Questionable Calls: The Chargers made four really sound picks before reaching a bit in the later rounds. Seventh-round wide receiver Tevin Reese for instance is not really a legitimate NFL prospect. Summary: Chargers general manager Tom Telesco didnt have a ton of picks to work with but he generally made sound, prudent decisions when it was his turn. FINAL GRADE: B Undrafted rookie free agent signings: S Alden Darby, Arizona State; DE Colton Underwood, Illinois State; DT Tenny Palepoi, Utah; DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, Boise State; TE Mike Flacco, New Haven; WR Javontee Herndon, Arkansas; RB D.J. Adams, Portland State; CB Greg Ducre, Washington; WR Brelon Chancellor, North Texas; OT Ian White, Boston College; P Chase Tenpenny, Nevada; OT Jeremiah Sirles, Nebraska; LB Alvin Scioneaux, Wofford; G D.J. Johnson, New Mexico; CB Chris Davis, Auburn; WR Torrence Allen, West Texas A&M; WR Micah Hatfield, Oregon State Joey Votto Jersey . - Tiger Woods only made it through 10 holes Thursday — this time because of the weather, not his back. Seeking their third straight Davis Cup title, the Czechs will rely again on veteran Radek Stepanek.TORONTO – The first-place Blue Jays hit the halfway mark of the season with 45 wins and a two-game lead on Baltimore in the American League East, territory unfamiliar to a franchise still waiting for its first playoff game since October 23, 1993, the night Joe Carter walked off Mitch Williams into World Series lore. "Im proud of the way the guys played," said manager John Gibbons. "It was kind of a so-so start and we kicked it in there in the month of May and put ourselves in a good position. Now, you know, we just need to do that again in the second half or even improve on that but Im very, very happy with the effort and the way the guys have been playing baseball. Its that simple." You wont find a Mission Accomplished banner hanging in the clubhouse. The expectation is much greater. "Has it met it yet? No," said Casey Janssen. "Our expectation is to make the playoffs and win the World Series and were not there yet. Weve got a long way to go. I think everyone believed we could be this type of team but were not throwing a party yet, we know that. We know theres a ton of talent here and its the AL East so anything can happen." Despite a recent downturn in offensive production, through 81 games Toronto continues to sit in the top seven of most major categories. The club sits first in the majors with 104 home runs. Its fourth with a .262 batting average and .331 on-base percentage. The on-base plus slugging percentage of .767 ranks third and its 272 walks are seventh. The most pleasant surprise and biggest disappointment reside on the same spot: the pitchers mound. The pleasant surprise: Blue Jays starters lead the American League with 35 wins (a number not reached until the 135th game last season) and the staff ERA of 3.87 is best in the AL East. The biggest disappointment: the bullpen, the ray of sunshine in a stormy 2013 season, has compiled baseballs fourth-worst ERA (4.48). Its a target for improvement. "I think there are some times when weve got to be better in the bullpen," said Gibbons. "Weve got to shore that up a little bit. Its like anything, consistency over the whole pitching staff and hopefully you stay healthy enough." The Blue Jays have been fortunate to remain relatively healthy, dealing with injuries theyve been able to cover. Maicer Izturis was a backup infielder. Brandon Morrow wasnt pitching well when he got hurt. Colby Rasmus missed 33 games with a hamstring strain and the Jays got by with an Anthony Gose-Kevin Pillar platoon in centerfield. The medical staff is now doing the dance with Jose Bautista as he deals with a hamstring probleem, which could be made worse if rushed. Dave Concepcion Reds Jersey. Bautista will run sprints on Saturday morning and depending on how he feels, could be available to at least pinch hit on the weekend. QUIET TIME FOR JANSSEN Wondering where closer Casey Janssen has been these days? Hes around. He just hasnt pitched much due to a lack of save opportunities. Since notching his 12th save of the season on June 15 in Baltimore, Janssen has appeared twice. He mopped up the epic, 14-9 comeback win on June 20 in Cincinnati. He threw the ninth inning of a 6-6 game against the Yankees on June 24 and got the win when the Blue Jays walked off. It can be difficult for relievers when they go through a period without consistent work. "I feel like saves come in bunches at times," said Janssen. "You get opportunities to pitch maybe in a lopsided game one way or another if it gets to be too long. Sometimes there are times when you dont get in but you get up. Im one of those guys that always has relied on my command and I guess it comes a little more natural to me than others." Janssen has 12 saves in 14 opportunities this season. "Sometimes the rest is good, knowing that the tough stretch is going to come at some point," said Janssen. Expect Janssen to get into a game before the weekend is over, regardless of whether Toronto has a lead of three or less. Janssen speaks to pitching coach Pete Walker about his schedule, who relays the message to manager John Gibbons. If Janssen goes four or five days without action his arms reaction to its diminished workload becomes less predictable. "You wonder if your arms going to be a little cranky or if its going to be super fresh," said Janssen. "Sometimes you feel great when you get the rest and sometimes youre kind of knocking the dust off a little bit." Remember that Janssen had an abbreviated spring training thanks to stiffness in the back of his pitching shoulder. He didnt appear in a Grapefruit League game until the final week of March. Then, in Montreal, he strained his left oblique and didnt make his season debut until May 12. Its been a build for Janssen, who anticipates being able to pitch on three consecutive days, if needed, as the importance of each game ramps up. "I feel like Id love to do it and Id love to have the opportunity to do it," said Janssen. "I think a lot of those three in a rows depend on how the first two went and the stress level of those innings. My goal is to be able to pitch in every opportunity possible, especially as the season gets further along and as this division and the race gets tight and everything like that." Here are five thoughts on the Toronto Raptors seven-game loss to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Cheap Roshe Two For Sale . 1. JOE JOHNSON (Nets): If I had to pick the guy that was the MVP on this Series, No doubt in my mind it was him. Forget his numbers for a second which were impressive to say the least. It had more to do with his presence and the inability for the Raptors to find a viable/consistent solution to overcome his vast talents. Bottom line, hes a very difficult cover and his strength, post skills, passing ability, creativity off the bounce and distance shooting make him a fascinating and gifted offensive player. Give him credit, He took on all the challenges and made the adjustments and was the difference in this series.                  2. STATEMENT: Thanks again!  You - the fans have made a wonderful statement across the North American sports landscape and in the NBA community that Toronto and the country of Canada is a growing and vibrant hoops hotbed and will be heard from for generations to come. Cant tell you the impression its made on folks all across the NBA. Utterly remarkable to say the least. Great Opportunity for Raptors President and GM, Masai Ujiri, to now build from a position of strength in his retention and recruitment efforts as he formulates his vision for the long term success of the franchise. A step forward. Long way to go though - yet you can start to see the light.         3. KYLE LOWRY: No idea what will happen with him regarding his future with the Raptors. Im hopeful they can work something out. Ill say this though, the man has really impressed me this season. Every day he left everything out there on the floor for you and competed like few players ever have in a Raptors uniform. For that, we should be grateful and impressed at the same time. Hes been a joy to watch this season and an inspiration to so many young players that can learn from his sheer will and effort that you can overcome a whole lot if you give it your all. He came up short but the man is a winner. Fingers crossed it all comes together and hes back in Toronto.               4. MARCUS THORNTON (Nets): In a Game 7, many times you need that guy that just comes out of left field that gets you over the hump particularly when youre the road team. Give coach Jason Kidd credit, he played a great hunch and it paid off huge dividends for him. His perimeter shooting, creativity, rebounding and overall explosiveness were the edge the Nets sorely needed to pull off the road win in a deciding game. He was lousy in the early part of the series after playing quite well since being acquired from Sacramento but Coach Kidd showed renewed faith in him and was justly rewarded for it. Joe Johnson was the MVP but he was the difference.                         5. DWANE CASEY: Actions speak louder than words. Three years and each year his teams have gotten better and he has grown each year as a head coach. As good a coach as he is - and hes a very good one - hes an even better man. Class act. He did an outstanding job this year and when I reflect over the three year period he has been consistent and stayed true to his core beliefs which I truly respect. He led a team this year that had many limitations (as we could all plainly see in this Series) to 48 wins, an Atlantic Division title and came up a bit short to a much more experienced, talented and deeper Nets team. Yes - Were all bitterly disappointed in the loss of this series yet when you take time to reflect, this organization has a true leader who is bright, steady and wont be out-worked by anyone. When I evaluate a coach, I always point to year three as my barometer of where you truly judge them. Theyve had more than enough time to get things the way they want and now you want to see that vision unfold before you. He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt in my mind that hes more than deserving of being the head coach of the Raptors and when I evaluate him against his peers Im quite impressed. As a former coach, I think I have a pretty decent feel when I compare/contrast coaches strengths/weaknesses and when I look at coach Casey I see a man who has rolled up his sleeves, paid his dues and is truly a right fit for the task of the challenges that lie ahead for the organization. Hes a coachs coach and I can tell you flat out that the men in his profession not only truly like him but all respect him tremendously. Happy for his success. Good man. Good things do truly happen for good people. CHICAGO -- Lloyd McClendon tried to remember each of the five relievers who pitched so well as Saturday afternoons game stretched into the early evening. The manager of the Seattle Mariners gave up after a brief moment. It was enough to know they each had a scoreless outing. Brad Miller hit an RBI double in the 14th inning and Fernando Rodney earned his AL-best 25th save, leading Seattle to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. "Each and every one of them came in, threw the ball extremely well," McClendon said of his bullpen, and then added with a chuckle, "I cant even remember who all pitched it was so long ago." Yoervis Medina, Charlie Furbush, Danny Farquhar, Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) and Rodney combined for six innings of one-hit relief. Farquhar got five outs and Wilhelmsen pitched two innings. "Battle of the bullpens there, some good arms being run out, and we just kept fighting," Miller said. Michael Saunders reached on an infield single against Ronald Belisario (3-5) and swiped second before Miller hit a drive into the gap in left-centre for a ground-rule double. It was Millers first hit in six at-bats on the day. "A lot of character and a lot of grind today," Saunders said. Saunders and Logan Morrison had three hits apiece for Seattle, which has won five of six and 11 of 14 overall. Felix Hernandez pitched eight sharp innings to help the Mariners bounce back from Friday nights 7-1 loss in the series opener. Chicago managed only four hits while wasting another strong start by Jose Quintana, who struck out 10 in 7 2-3 innings. "When you play 14 innings and only get four hits obviously theyre doing something right," second baseman Gordon Beckham said. "Long day." The game was scoreless before the White Sox pushed across two runs in the eighth against Hernandez, who had gone 7-1 in his previous 10 starts. Conor Gillaspie had a leadoff triple and scored on Dayan Viciedos double. Tyler Flowers added a sacrifice fly. Quintana allowed four hits and walked one in 7 2-3 scoreless innings. The 10 strikeouts matched a season high for the left-hander, who is 2-0 with a sparkling 0.94 ERA in his last four starts. "I throw my pitches in the counnt, throw both sides, getting ahead in the count - it (becomes) more important inning by inning," Quintana said. Cheap Roshe one Online. "I keep going with that, its the best thing for long games for me." Chicago was in line for its second straight win against Seattle before the Mariners rallied in the ninth. Mike Zunino had a sacrifice fly against Zach Putnam before consecutive two-out singles by Morrison and Saunders produced the tying run. Morrisons grounder went off the glove of diving first baseman Jose Abreu and bounced past Beckham on the way to right field. Hernandez allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner is 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA in nine career starts at the White Sox. "He did a great job today and kept us in the ballgame the entire way through," Saunders said. Hernandez and Quintana were locked in an impressive duel before the late scoring. Quintana struck out six while retiring his first 11 batters, including the side in the second. Robinson Cano had a two-out single for Seattles first baserunner in the fourth, but Quintana fanned Corey Hart to end the inning. Hernandez was just as dominant, retiring 11 in a row after Adam Eatons leadoff single in the first. He also set down 10 in a row in another impressive stretch. Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork. Lenny Dykstra Jersey .com) - Jim Haslett wont return as the defensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins. The team and Haslett mutually agreed to part ways after five seasons. Haslett spent his first four years with the Redskins under Mike Shanahan and this past season under first-year head coach Jay Gruden. Jay and I mutually agreed its time for the Redskins to have a new defensive coordinator, said Haslett in a statement Wednesday. I want to thank (owner) Dan Snyder, (general manager) Bruce Allen, coach Gruden and all the players and fellow coaches for their efforts the last five years and I wish them nothing but the best. The Redskins were 4-12 this past season and ranked 20th in the NFL in yards allowed. Washington also yielded 438 points, fewer than only Chicago (442) and Oakland (452). Jim and I have had discussions over the last few days and have decided that its best for everyone that we have a new defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, said Gruden. I wish him nothing but the best in the future. Haslett joined the Redskins in January 2010 after a year as the head coach of the fledgling UFLs Florida Tuskers. He was also the head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2000-05, compiling a record of 45-51, and had stints as defensive coordinator with the Saints (1996), Pittsburgh Steelers (1997-99) and St. Louis Rams (2006-08). In 2008, he was also the interim head coach of the Rams for the final 12 games, posting a record of 2-10. The 59-year-old Pittsburgh native was a linebacker for the Bills and Jets from 1979-87. Steven Matz Jersey ., climbed from seventh to fifth spot in womens competition Sunday at the ISU world junior figure skating championships.TORONTO - Three weeks ago DeMar DeRozan was happily taking advantage of a flawed partnership with Rudy Gay. The Raptors two leading scorers were never able to co-exist the way they hoped or the team had envisioned, but individually DeRozan was thriving, in the midst of a career season. During his brief tenure, Gays presence meant far more to his team, to DeRozan, than his sub-par production. Despite his poor shot selection and declining percentages, the former Raptors forward consistently topped the oppositions scouting report, drawing the attention of their best defender(s) and making the game a whole lot easier for his emerging sidekick. No longer Robin to Gays Batman, DeRozan has assumed the lead role and is embracing the added responsibility that comes with it. "Lately Ive been trying to do a lot of different things," DeRozan told TSN.ca last week. "Getting my teammates involved, trying to rebound, trying to get steals, do a lot of other things that keep me going that probably before I didnt used to do."  "I let my shot [dictate] my game, but now I just trust my teammates. I just try to go out there and do other stuff because I know I can be a decoy with how much of the defence I draw." For all his ability and the consequential attention it would attract, Gay was never willing to be a decoy in Toronto, at least not consistently. He was too prideful, a result of the self-imposed expectations that come with a max salary in the NBA. The moment had to be his, which to him meant the shot had to be his. Opposing defences feasted on that predictability and more often than not DeRozan became the forgotten man.  A career 26 per cent three-point shooter, DeRozan was firing the long-ball at a 37 per cent clip in 18 games before Gay was dealt to Sacramento earlier in the month. In his fifth season, DeRozan was averaging career-highs across the board but his growth and maturity has become most evident in the aftermath of the trade. Despite the added responsibility in 10 games since the trade, his shot attempts have not increased (17.9 per game, up from 17.7) and his scoring average has dipped just slightly (20.5 points per game from 21.4). Instead, his assists (4.5 per contest, from 2.7) and rebounding numbers (4.7, from 2.7) have gone up. The ball is moving more than it has in a long time, the team is playing together, winning together and DeRozans fingerprints are all over it. The Raptors are 9-2 when DeRozan registers four or more assists this season.  "I understand a lot of teams, mostly all the teams are going to key [in on] me so I use that to my advantage and just try to get my teammates going," he said after matching a career-high with nine assists in the overtime win against Dallas on December 20th. ;Hes not cowering from the defensive pressure hes facing, hes also not trying to do too much. Michael Conforto Jersey.   "[Teams are] showing him a lot of respect, trying to get the ball out of his hands," Dwane Casey said of the 24-year-old guard. "Hes done an excellent job of passing out of it. His scoring average will probably go down a little bit but its going to help someone else." So far, sophomore Terrence Ross has been the primary beneficiary. The Raptors second-year guard, whose playing time has increased by over 10 minutes per game since the trade, is excelling in the starting lineup alongside DeRozan on the wing. Although DeRozans three-point percentage has plummeted without Gay in the lineup - shooting 19 per cent from long distance over the last 10 games - Ross has seen his go from 34 per cent pre-trade to 48 per cent since, setting a new career-high with seven-made triples (on 11 attempts) in Saturdays win over the Knicks. "I think its helped T-Ross," Casey said, "because [teams are] double teaming [DeRozan] and leaving him open." "Im just taking what the defence gives me," added Ross, who is averaging 14.4 points in nine contests as a starter. "DeMar [has been] consistent all year, he can go out and score in different ways and it kind of opens up things for me, Kyle (Lowry), Jonas (Valanciunas) and everybody else." His shots have been reminiscent of those DeRozan got, and made consistently earlier in the campaign, many of them coming from the corner. The corner three is the most efficient shot in basketball and the 21-year-old is perfecting it. Ross ranks 11th in the NBA, knocking down 24 corner threes this season while shooting them at a 49 per cent clip. He leads the association with 16 corner threes made since December 8th, when the Gay trade was consummated, shooting a remarkable 55 per cent from that region. Ross is developing a niche, one that could see him become increasingly valuable to the Raptors attack and its all predicated on the leadership of the teams best player. "Hes just playing with confidence," DeRozan said of Ross, his protégé. "I tell him, dont go out there second guessing yourself. You have the ability to do anything on that court, you jump higher than everybody on that court, youre a great shooter, you could do so much just use it and dont worry about messing up so much. Thats what hes doing." "I know I can score, I can get up shots when I need to but I look at it like, let me use myself to get Terrence an open shot or use myself to free up Kyle or create a shot for somebody else," he continued. "Thats what its all about because I know I draw so much attention, I just use that to my benefit." Sergei Gonchar let Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill know over the summer hed be willing to accept a trade if it meant going to a Stanley Cup contender. Colby Rasmus Jersey .Nill made his move Tuesday by sending the 40-year-old defenceman to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for left-winger Travis Moen. The Canadiens get the depth on the blue-line they were seeking, while the sputtering Stars get a role player up front and open up a spot for younger contributors.I dont want to run Montreals business, but when I look at their defence I just think hes a good fit for them, Nill said on a conference call. Theyve got some good puck-movers, they got a couple other good Russian players there. Hes going to be a good fit for them. Hes a first-class individual, he brings experience of winning.Gonchar, whos in his 20th NHL season, joins the Habs after previous stints in Dallas, Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Washington. He played for current Montreal coach Michel Therrien with the Penguins. The veteran blue-liner joins fellow Russians Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin, likely pushing out a younger player like Jarred Tinordi or Nathan Beaulieu. Gonchar has a salary-cap hit of US$5 million on his deal that expires at the end of this season. After missing the first 11 games of the season with a broken foot, Gonchar played the past three and recorded an assist.Nill said Gonchar was a positive influence on 19-year-old Valeri Nichushkin and also on the Stars young defencemen. With other players like John Klingberg and Julius Honka in the pipeline, trading Gonchar opens up a spot in the lineup.Theyve earned the right, the opportunity, Nill said. I needed to start opening up some doors and some opportunity for them. And, Nill said, this is an opportunity in Montreal for Gonchar, who has 798 points (219-579) in 1,256 regular-season games since making his NHL debut in 1994-95.I think Montreals got as good a chance as anybody to win the Cup, and its a good opportunity for Sergei to go in there and show what he can do to help them, Nill said.Going the other way is Moen, a respected veteran in the Habs locker-room but someone who had been a healthy scratch a handful of times already this season. Because of that, the 32-year-old native of Stewart Valley, Sask., wasnt surprised to get the call from GM Marc Bergevin that hed been traded.Any time obviously youre not in the lineup youre always questioning, wondering whats coming down the road, Moen said on a conference call. This year I just wanted to play hockey and help my team and I was kind of in and out of the lineup. When something like this happens, you look back and youre not too surprised, thats for sure.Moen, who did not have a point in 10 games this season, said he did not request a trade and appreciated Bergevins honesty during the process. The trade of Moen is another change from the Habs team that went to the Eastern Conference final. Captain Brian Gionta left in free agency, and alternate captain Josh Gorges was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. In September, Gionta mentioned Moen as someone hed recommend to replace him as captain. Instead, Montreal went with four alternates — Markov, P.K. Subban, Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec.I think its just kind of a coincidence its veterans going, Moen said of the Habs changes. Its the way the game goes sometimes.By taking on Gonchars heavier salary this season, the Habs freed up some room in 2015-16. Moen has one more year left on his contract after this one at a cap hit of US$1.85 million.I have a lot of players I possibly could be losing next year I have to make decisions on, Nill said. Travis, I know what he is, hes a character player, were always going to need those type of players Nill expects Moen to be a big part of the Stars penalty-killing. But for a team that has lost seven in a row, getting a gritty bottom-six forward may not be the end of the moves. Its a start. Were open to it, Nill said. We have to find out internally what we have first. WASHINGTON - Alex Ovechkin played his weakest game of the season, Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. Michael Kors Outlet 85% OFF .No matter. He still helped his team beat the Florida Panthers. The Capitals scored on all three shots in the shootout, including the clincher by Ovechkin, and Justin Peters made 20 saves to lift Washington over the Panthers 2-1 on Saturday night.Thats nice run support, Peters cracked following his first start.Jason Chimera scored his first goal of the young season for the Capitals (3-0-2), who improved to 10-0-1 in their last 11 meetings against their former division rival.Brad Boyes power play goal for Florida (1-3-1) tied the game early in the third period. Each team scored on its first shootout attempt, and Nicklas Backstrom then put the Capitals ahead 2-1. After receiving the pinpoint centring pass, Chimera faked Montoya out of position before backhanding the puck into the open net for a 1-0 lead 17:12 in.Neither team scored in the second period, but Brooks Laichs tip-in for Washington was disallowed because of a high-sticking call.Laich exited the game following a third period collision and didnt return. Trotz said Laich sustained an upper-body injury, but offered no additional information.Washington held Florida without a shot on its first three power plays, but the Panthers broke that cycle early in the third period.Peters stopped Sean Bergenheims close-range attempt, but Boyes put in the rebound 4:27 into the third to make it 1-1.Peters made his first start since Jan. 19 when he was with Carolina.NOTES: Dylan Olsen earned an assist on Boyes goal. ... Roesers immediate departure was announced Tuesday by the NBA. The league announced plans last week to appoint a CEO to oversee the franchise in Sterlings absence. "This will provide an opportunity for a new CEO to begin on a clean slate and for the team to stabilize under difficult circumstances," NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million and urged owners to force him to sell the Clippers a week ago, responding to league-wide outrage over racist comments made by the 80-year-old real-estate mogul. Sterling is the NBAs longest-tenured owner after buying the Clippers in 1981. Roeser, one of the Clippers alternate governors, is one of the leagues longest-tenured executives, having just completed his 30th season with the team. Roeser has been a loyal frontman for Sterling since the franchises days in San Diego, and he stood by Sterling during every controversial stretch of the owners career. Only radio and television play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler has worked for the Clippers longer than the 54-year-old Roeser, who became team president in 2007. But Roeser infuriated many longtime Clippers employees last week after Sterlings private conversation was made public by TMZ. While nearly everyone else was reacting with outrage, Roeser released a statement questioning whether the recordings of Sterling were legitimate, while simultaneously apologizing on Sterlings behalf for sentiments about Magic Johnson on the recordings. Michael Kors Handbags Outlet. Roesers statement was sympathetic to Sterling and criticized V. Stiviano, Sterlings longtime associate and the other voice on the recordings. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said Roesers statement upset many loyal Clippers employees who had been horrified by Sterlings comments. Rivers held meetings with much of the Clippers front-office staff last week while Sterling was ousted, encouraging them to keep working for the franchise. Roeser joined the organization in 1984 from an accounting firm. Two years later, he became executive vice-president, overseeing all facets of the teams business operations. He has been president of the Los Angeles Clippers Foundation since it began in 1994. He helped bring Rivers to Los Angeles from the Boston Celtics last June, and was part of the acquisition of All-Star guard Chris Paul in 2011. Roeser also oversaw the development and construction of the teams training facility that opened in 2008. Rivers is the Clippers senior vice-president of basketball operations, working alongside executive vice-president of player personnel Gary Sacks on the basketball side of the teams operations. The Clippers overcame the distraction of Sterlings banishment to outlast Golden State in a seven-game first-round series on Saturday night. CHICAGO -- Joakim Noah believes that the Chicago Bulls made the right decision when they broke up the core of the team in the offseason. Wholesale Jerseys USA .I think it was time for change, Noah said Friday. Theres no question about that. It seems like this is a happy group, enjoy being around one another. Thats good. Thats what its all about, thats how it should be.The Bulls traded Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks?during the summer and Noah signed with New York in free agency, transactions that broke up the core of a team that had been together for eight seasons.Rose and Noah will play in Chicago on Friday for the first time as visitors.Rose, a Chicago native, is in his hometown for the first time since he was traded. He spent the offseason in Los Angeles.Being back here, it felt good, to tell you the truth, he said Friday. Especially the Cubs winning, I felt the energy of the city. The city is on some type of high right now. Its great for the city, with everything that weve been going through, the killings, everything. We need some positive light shined here.Rose added that his biggest regret as a Bull was not winning a title for his hometown.Only thing I can do about that is say I gave it my all. I felt like I gave it my all. I really tried, Rose said. ... I had multiple times where I envisioned winning championships here, and it never happened. So I have to take those visions and take them to New York.Rose was drafted by the Bulls with the No. 1 overall pick out of Memphis in 2008 and was named Rookie of the Year that season. He was named NBA MVP after the 2010-11 campaign, the youngest player to win the award, and led the Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference during that regular season. But he hurt his knee for the first time in the playoffs the following season and had played in just 39 percent of possible games due to various injuries following the original injury.I know Im going to get some boos here and there, Rose said Wednesday night. Its all a part of the game, all a part of the sport. Its not going to affect the way that I play. One of the newest members of the Bulls, Dwyane Wade, hopes for nothing but a positive reception in Roses return. ??Wade has always spoken highly of Rose over the years, so it should come as no surprise that the future Hall of Famer believes Rose should be cheered on Friday night during his first game back at the United Center.Hes from the city of Chicago, Wade said after Fridays shootaround. Theres going to be a lot of fans that are going to cheer and root and support their very own. And then theres other fans that want to see the Knicks lose and want to see the Bulls win. But I think at the end of the day, he did nothing here but what he was supposed to. Derrick couldnt help the fact that he went down with injuries. Thats nothing that an athlete can control.Wade, like many within the Bulls organization, is hopeful that fans will give Rose a nice ovation during starting lineup introductions. He represented the Bulls in a positive light, Wade continued. From the standpoint of what he was able to do on the court. He gave everything he had and you cant do nothing but cheer that on. So I look forward to a warm ovation for him and for Noah. And then I look forward to getting into the game.?The Bulls missed the playoffs for the first time in Roses career in 2015-16.Noah played just 29 games that season due to a left shoulder ailment that required season-ending surgery in January. He signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Knicks in July.I look back on it, I was definitely frustrated, Noah said of the 2015-16 season. There was definitely a lot of adversity going on there. I can look back at it and see where things went wrong. Its not about blaming one person. Everybody in that locker room is good people. Its just s--- happens. Its a locker room. At the end of the day, the things I remember the most are good memories from everybody. I have no hard feelings towards anybody.Rose, Noah and the Knicks have lost three of their first four games, allowing at least 100 points in each contest. Wholesale Jerseys . In the aftermath of a dramatic four-run ninth inning, which capped a thrilling 6-5 Blue Jays victory over the Orioles to ensure an important series split, it was clear that on this day their positional proximity was their only commonality. There stood Kawasaki post-game, the affable fill-in for the injured Jose Reyes who has achieved cult hero status in Toronto, basking in his finest moment in the major leagues. Hed just hit the two-out, two-run walk off double. Hed just tossed his helmet to the sky in delight as he rounded second base and saw the winning run, Mark DeRosa chugging all the way from first, cross home plate. There stood the ultimate underdog, the unlikely major leaguer, the guy who knows little English but communicates with a smile and a series of one-liners, hamming it up as he consulted a brochure of Japanese-to-English baseball clichés. "I did it," Kawasaki began. "Give me a hug," he jokingly followed. "Lets go," he bellowed to the assembled media. "What happened," was the first question, Kawasaki asked to describe his game-ending heroics. His response: "No ask. Japanese only, please. Im Japanese." Kawasaki, 31, is making the most of an unexpected opportunity. A slap hitter with no power – it seems his only shot at a home run would be of the inside-the-park variety – and a below-average throwing arm, he has exceeded expectations thanks to a tireless work ethic and a willingness to work pitchers. "When Reyes went down, we were scrambling, we didnt know what we were going to do," said manager John Gibbons. "We knew very little about him but hes come up here, hes done a tremendous job for us, he really has. Hes played just a good brand of baseball. You know one thing about the players who come from Japan, theyre fundamentally sound, they play the game the right way and things like that. Hes done a lot of good things for us. It couldnt happen to a better guy. It really couldnt." Juxtapose Kawasaki with Lawrie. There stood the Canadian face of Canadas only Major League baseball franchise, the 23-year-old for whom the world should be his oyster. There stood a highly intense young man who, less than two full years into his big league career, has had his share of brushes with baseballs written and unwritten laws. Lawrie was answering questions not aboout his role in the victory but about an incident of petulant behaviour earlier in that thrilling ninth inning. Wholesale Jerseys Cheap. When Lawrie came to the plate as the fourth hitter of the ninth, the Jays had scored to cut the deficit to 5-3 and had runners on first and third with nobody out. Lawrie hit a first pitch fly ball to Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis. Adam Lind, the runner at third, smartly held his ground. Lawrie walked, didnt jog or run, up the first base line toward the Jays dugout. As he did so he glared at Lind and third base coach Luis Rivera. Steps from entering the dugout, he began to shout in their direction, miffed at why Lind didnt tag up and score. Moments later, Jose Bautista was trying to calm Lawrie down as he engaged in a heated discussion with Gibbons. Was Lawrie upset that Lind didnt attempt to score, denying him the sacrifice fly and run batted in? Doubtful, given the intensity of the moment its unlikely Lawrie processed such a selfish thought. Lawries out was the first of the inning and the tying run was at first base. More hits were required to square the game and Lind would score then. If Lind is thrown out at home by Markakis, who has a cannon for an arm, it likely derails the rally. Lind and Rivera were in the right. Is it possible this most basic strategy eluded Lawrie? If so, his heart was in the right place but his head wasnt. Lawrie was brief with his post-game explanation. "No not so much heated just kind of caught up in the moment of trying to score runs and come back against those guys was all," he said. Gibbons, a no-nonsense Texan, played the situation cool. "Brett plays to win, hes a very intense guy," said Gibbons. "Weve probably talked this year more than you guys will ever know. I dont want to say hes like my son, were not that tight, but we do talk a lot. He plays to win. Yeah he got a little heated, I got a little heated, what have you but thats over. Its no big deal, those things happen." The Blue Jays have a decision to make. The club could handle the matter internally, give Lawrie a stern talking to and a warning not to repeat the behaviour. The alternative is for the organization, for Gibbons, to take a stand. Lawrie should sit out Monday nights game against the Atlanta Braves. That way, if in the future a similar scenario unfolds, Lawrie may give a second thought to his approach. After all, in team sports, it should always be team and teammates first before all else.
