The Cowboys hope Chaz Green can <a href="http://www.authenticsaintsshop.com/shop-by-players-garrett-grayson-jersey-c-1_15.html">Garrett Grayson Womens Jersey</a> step in and start at right tackle.

The addition of Byron Bell in free agency is meant to push him in that direction.

Doug Free informed the club immediately after the scouting combine that he intended to retire. That put Green next in line.

But here's the issue: Green has been active for only four games since the Cowboys took him in the third round of the 2015 draft. He missed his entire rookie season after undergoing hip surgery. Green started at left tackle for two games early<a href="http://www.authenticsteelerssale.com/shop-by-players-ernie-stautner-jersey-c-2_51.html">http://www.authenticsteelerssale.com/shop-by-players-ernie-stautner-jersey-c-2_51.html</a>  last season when Tyron Smith was injured and performed relatively well, but he sprained his foot and didn't play another snap for the remainder of the season after Oct. 2.

"Obviously we've got a guy we drafted in the third round, Chaz Green, who we feel like has a great opportunity to win that job," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "But he needs to be pushed.

"It's going to be a competitive situation."

Bell dislocated his ankle and missed the entire '16 season. But <a href="http://www.authenticsteelersshop.com/shop-by-players-darrius-heywardbey-jersey-c-2_42.html">Darrius Heywardbey Youth Jersey</a> he started 16 games for Tennessee the previous season, picking up those starts at left guard, right tackle and left tackle. Bell began his career as an undrafted free agent in Carolina and started 47 of the 49 games he played for the Panthers.

The competition for the starting right tackle job begins with Green and Bell. But the club also re-signed Jonathan Cooper, who finished last season with the Cowboys. If Green and Bell struggle and Cooper looks good at guard, the club has the option of trying La'el Collins at right tackle.

The best five players will start, regardless of how that shakes out from a position standpoint.

"I think obviously what we did with Cooper was a big deal for us," Jones said. "He can play those inside positions, center and guard. And Bell has played all over the place.

"We think that's great depth for our line. It'll make it a competitive situation and we think obviously helps make us a better football <a href="http://www.coltsshopauthentic.com/shop-by-players-23-frank-gore-jersey-c-1_12.html">http://www.coltsshopauthentic.com/shop-by-players-23-frank-gore-jersey-c-1_12.html</a> team when you've got that kind of competition going on internally with each position.

"At the end of the day we're going to try to get our five best offensive linemen on the football field."
