SAN FRANCISCO -- A tumultuous month that started with coach Steve Sarkisian
leaving for another job ended with a milestone win for Washington.

to tie Washingtons career touchdown record and the Huskies went on to beat BYU
31-16 in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Friday night. "I cant say enough about these
guys," interim coach Marques Tuiasosopo said. "They wanted it and through some
turmoil they stayed focused, they came together as a team and came here with a
purpose." Keith Price added a 16-yard TD pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and
John Ross returned a kick 100 yards for another score to help the Huskies (9-4)
win their most games since going 11-1 and winning the Rose Bowl in 2000. The
game capped a whirlwind stretch for the Huskies that began with Sarkisian
leaving for Southern California. Chris Petersen was hired away from Boise State
to take over at Washington, and Tuiasosopo coached the bowl game on an interim
basis. The Huskies won just their second bowl game since Tuiasosopo led them to
that Rose Bowl win over Purdue 13 years ago. "We all know what hes done here as
a player," Sankey said. "It makes it that much easier when a coach leaves when
you have a guy like Coach Tui." Taysom Hill threw for 293 yards and ran for 133
yards and a score, and Justin Sorensen kicked three field goals for the Cougars
(8-5), who had their four-game bowl winning streak snapped. But Sorensen also
missed one in the third quarter after an interception by Robertson Daniel gave
BYU prime field position, and the Cougars allowed two long kickoff returns,
including one for a touchdown. "Taysom led our team really well," coach Bronco
Mendenhall said. "He played hard, he played physical. He gave us a great chance
to win the game and stay in it. I told my team I was proud of them. I liked how
hard they played. Our special teams needed to execute better." The defence led
the way for Washington, holding the Cougars to four field goal attempts and one
touchdown on five drives inside the Huskies 30. The Huskies were much more
efficient on their scoring drives, with Sankey scoring on a pair of 11-yard runs
in the first half to give him 38 career touchdowns, tying the school record held
by George Wilson (1923-25). "Bishop has done a great job of carrying us all
season," Price said. "We know we need to feed the horse. Hes been a work horse
for us all year." Price then led a touchdown drive to open the third quarter,
capping it with a well-placed throw to Seferian-Jenkins on third-and-8 to make
it 28-16. Seferian-Jenkins said after the game he will leave school early to
enter the NFL draft. "It has nothing to do with Coach Petersen," he said. "I
have a lot of respect for him, but ultimately it was a family and financial
decision." Price went 17 for 23 for 123 yards before leaving with an apparent
rib injury in the second half. Sankey also sat out the fourth quarter because of
a hand injury, but it didnt matter. Backup quarterback Cyler Miles had a 32-yard
run to set up Travis Coons 45-yard field goal that made it 31-16 midway through
the fourth. A strong defensive effort led by Hauoli Kikaha (three sacks) and
John Timu (14 tackles, one sack and an interception) kept BYU off the scoreboard
for the entire second half as the Huskies moved their safeties closer to the
line of scrimmage to take away short passes. "Guys come up and load the box, we
need to be able to throw the ball," Hill said. "As a quarterback thats what you
want. They came down in man pressure, pushed us out of bounds and we missed a
few opportunities that way. Not only that but if the protection holds up a
little longer then we give guys on the outside and inside long enough to work
the routes and get open." Tuiasosopo was aggressive in his first game as head
coach, going for it twice in the first quarter on fourth-and-short. Sankey
converted the first but was stopped for a 9-yard loss by Kyle Van Noy on the
second try. That was one of the few times the Cougars stopped Sankey, who scored
on Washingtons first and last possessions of the first half to give the Huskies
a 21-16 lead at the break. The game made history by being the first ever in the
FBS with two female officials. Sarah Thomas was the line judge and Maia Chaka
was the head linesman based on their work in Conference USA this season.

Adams Jersey . Scheffler told The Associated Press on Wednesday he
made the choice because he had three concussions over the past four years. On
this weeks TSNFC podcast we spent a long time discussing the handball decision
that effectively ended Vancouver Whitecaps season. Much has been said and
written about whether or not World Cup referee Mark Geiger made the right call
to penalize Kendall Waston in last weeks playoff match at Dallas, with many
differing opinions on the matter. There doesnt seem to be a consensus, although
Geigers boss - referees chief Peter Walton - said it was the correct decision
and a standard call. As a veteran Premier League referee who now runs the
Professional Referees Organization in North America, Waltons opinion should be
respected, but the controversy surrounding the decision - and many other
handball decisions we see all over the world each week - could easily be avoided
if there were a change to the law. In my view, there are two things wrong with
the current law. Firstly, the punishment doesnt fairly reflect the size of the
crime. Secondly, there is too much room for interpretation of the referee which
makes consistency of decisions almost impossible. Here are the main points of
the current FIFA Law: Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player
making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the
following into consideration: ? the movement of the hand towards the ball (not
the ball towards the hand) ? the distance between the opponent and the ball
(unexpected ball) ? the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that
there is an infringement Deliberate - done consciously and intentionally I dont
think Kendall Waston made a conscious and intentional decision to handle the
ball inside the penalty area in the last 10 minutes of a playoff match. In my
mind it was a momentary lapse in concentration from the towering defender rather
than a deliberate act. In relation to this law, it seems deliberate can also
mean a player didnt react quickly enough to move his hand/arm out of the way of
the ball. But the fact the law allows such ambiguity means officials are in the
spotlight more than necessary whether or not they get the decision right. There
must be a bettter way.
Jamal Adams Youth Jersey. Although video
replays will certainly assist officials decision making in other areas, in the
instance of Waston it wouldnt have made much difference because even with
review, the decision would have been made depending on the officials
interpretation of the law. One suggestion I have seen is to award a penalty
anytime the ball hits a hand or arm inside the area whether it is intentional or
not. A clear rule - it doesnt matter how it happens, if the ball strikes the
hand, it is a penalty. Theres very little room for argument and interpretation
there, but I think it would lead to far too many penalties and also an excessive
number of game changing moments. Again, the punishment wouldnt match the
offence. New Law So how about this. In order to provide clarity, I would be in
favour of a rule change along the following lines: Anytime a player makes
contact with the ball inside the penalty area with his hand or arm, an indirect
free kick will be given. There is no room for interpretation - if it hits the
arm or hand whether deliberate or not, it is an indirect free kick. There is one
exception. If a player handles the ball to prevent a goal or an obvious goal
scoring opportunity, a penalty is given. With this rule applied, Kendall Wastons
handball would have been penalized with an indirect free kick, still giving the
opposing team the benefit of a set piece close to goal but eliminating the need
for a referee to award a penalty for an incident that was not going to end in a
goal. For me, that far better reflects the size of the infringement and also
would remove much of the debate surrounding penalty kicks awarded for handball.
Im not na?ve enough to expect that changing the law would eliminate all
problems. Im sure in some instances there would still be controversy and debate
surrounding what is or isnt an obvious goal scoring opportunity. But I believe
it would drastically decrease the amount of times a game is decided by a
referees decision and therefore lead to more post-game talk about players
instead of officiating – and that can only be a good thing.
