It was back in 1991 that Stephen Ames got a taste of what life in Canada would
be like.
Jarvis Jenkins Jersey . For a guy raised in
the tropical temperatures of Trinidad, it was a rude Calgary welcome. "I think
the wind chill was minus-55," he said recalling his first Canadian winter spent
living in the basement of his mother-in-laws house. "I never left the house."
Ames has never really grown fond of winter, but he has certainly fallen in love
with Canada. On Wednesday, the country paid him back for that by naming him to
the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. A four-time winner on the PGA Tour including the
2006 Players, Ames is winding down his career on the regular tour and preparing
to join the 50-and-over gang on the Champions circuit in April after reaching
the magic age of 50. For most of this year, hell split his time between the two
tours using his top 50-career money list exemption on the PGA Tour. When asked
what he thought the difference between the two tours would be, Ames said it
might have to do with what happens off the course. "I think its the 19th hole,"
he said with a chuckle. "I think its a bit more relaxed after the round." Ames
would be a worthy inductee based solely on his playing record, but his
contributions to Canadian golf go well beyond that. He has run the Stephen Ames
Cup for the past decade, a team event that pits squads from Canada against those
from Trinidad. Some of the youngsters who have participated in that event have
gone on to earn U.S. college scholarships. And he was instrumental in bringing
the Shaw Charity Classic to Calgary, helping line up a team of big rollers in
the Western Canadian city to lay the foundation for the Champions Tour event.
Ames was also the guy who gave an energetic young teacher named Sean Foley a
chance to work with a PGA Tour pro. We all know where thats gone. When asked
what the top mark of his career is, Ames didnt hesitate. "Its this," he stated,
in reference to his induction. "I think being in the Hall of Fame is the
highlight." On the course, Ames said that his Players victory was at the top of
his personal list. I can say that in all the golf Ive covered and watched, that
is simply the best 18 holes of golf Ive ever witnessed. Ive never seen anyone
control his golf ball for every shot as Ames did that day. All he did was beat
the best field in golf by six shots. I remember some of the biggest names in the
game that day shaking their heads in disbelief at what he was doing to TPC
Sawgrass. For some people, Ames is seen as a prickly personality but to those
who get to know him, nothing could be further from the truth. Hes a guy with a
huge heart who loves to laugh and loves his family. Sometimes when he speaks his
mind, it can get him in trouble such as the occasion when he questioned
Tiger Woods driving ahead of the 2006 Match Play. While a lot was made of that
and the subsequent beating Woods laid on him, what he said wasnt wrong. Woods
was hitting it all over the lot with his driver. After he won the Players, some
media members took him to task for saying he might skip the Masters to go on a
family vacation. They couldnt understand how someone would pass up the years
first major, the one thats exceptionally difficult to get into. What many failed
to realize was that his wife, Jodi, was recovering from surgery for lung cancer.
Suddenly a golf tournament, even the Masters, didnt seem so important. There are
also still some who, for small-minded reasons, dont even consider him a
Canadian. To me, a guy who leaves his native country to willingly take up
citizenship, to give back to the game here, to start businesses here, to create
tournaments here and make his home full time in Canada – and even cheer for the
Calgary Flames -- is about as Maple Leaf as they come. Ames is more than
deserving of a spot in Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, even if hes never learned to
love those nasty wind chills.

. They hope to persuade the other team owners and commissioner Roger Goodell to
put pressure on Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to drop the nickname they find
offensive. "Given the way the meeting transpired," Ray Halbritter, an Oneida

"it became somewhat evident they were defending the continued use of the

Ken Whisenhunts decision to accept Tennessees opening leaves Cleveland as one of
just three NFL franchises still searching for a head coach. Whisenhunt, who
guided Arizona to a Super Bowl, came close to being hired by the Browns last
year and interviewed with the team on Saturday. San Diegos loss on Sunday in the
AFC playoffs freed up teams to make offers to Whisenhunt and he chose the Titans
after it appeared he was headed to Detroit. Its not known if the Browns tried to
outbid the Titans for the well-regarded 51-year-old. With Whisenhunt no longer
in the mix, the Browns moved into the third week of their quest to replace Rob
Chudzinski without any clear front-runner, but with a new former NFL head coach
on their list. The team has interviewed at least five known candidates and the
Browns reportedly met Monday with former Titans coach Mike Munchak, also in
consideration with the Lions. The 53-year-old Munchak, a Hall of Fame lineman,
went 22-26 in three seasons with the Titans, who fired him on Jan. 4, ending his
30-plus-years association with the franchise. Clevelands degree of interest in
Munchak isnt known since the team is not commenting on any interviews and Browns
owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have maintained a low profile since
dumping Chudzinski after one season. And while there may not be a current
favourite to take over as Clevelands seventh full-time coach since 1999, there
are signs that Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase could be the Browns top
choice. The 35-year-old Gase was the first candidate contacted by the Browns,
but he informed them -- along with the Minnesota Vikings -- that he wanted to
wait until after the playoffs to be considered. "I told both teams that were
interested in me that I appreciated it and I was going to wait until after our
season had concluded," Gase said on Jan. 3. "They were great about it. They said
they appreciated me being up front and honest about it, and I thought that was
the best decision for whaat we are trying to accomplish with our team.
Leonard Williams Jersey. " Its not known if
Gase has agreed to an interview with either team. NFL rules prohibit teams from
offering jobs to assistant coaches who are still in the playoffs. Gases decision
to delay any interviews raised some flags about whether hes actually ready to be
a head coach. But as long as hes paired with quarterback Peyton Manning, Gases
profile will continue to grow and hell undoubtedly be coveted if he waits
another year. Following Denvers win on Sunday over San Diego, Manning praised
Gase during his postgame news conference for his play calling in helping the
Broncos advance to Sundays AFC Championship against New England. In his first
season as Denvers offensive co-ordinator, the Broncos scored an NFL record 606
points and led the league with 457.3 yards per game and 340.3 yards passing. His
resume is impressive, but even if the Browns meet with Gase, its not a given he
will be hired. Hes never been a head coach, and Haslam and Banner said they were
determined to find a "strong winner who knows how to win football games" as they
began looking for their second coach in just over a year. If the Browns chose to
wait on Gase, they run the risk of the coaching talent pool drying up and being
in a desperate situation should he turn them down. Cleveland has waited until
after the Super Bowl before. Following the 2004 season, the Browns hired Romeo
Crennel in the hours after the Super Bowl. The Browns are already losing a
public relations war as the search has dragged on. After New England offensive
co-ordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew his name from consideration for Clevelands
opening last week, it heightened the perception that Cleveland is not an
attractive job. It hasnt helped that some national reports have described the
Browns situation as "toxic" and "radioactive." Haslam and Banner have also
interviewed Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive
co-ordinator Todd Bowles and Green Bay quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo.
