NEW YORK -- The New York Mets are the latest team to take a chance on Daisuke
Matsuzaka.
Steve Smith Sr Jersey . The Mets signed the
Japanese right-hander to a one-year contract on Thursday and plan to start him
in the opener of a weekend series against the Detroit Tigers. The 32-year-old
Matsuzaka was released by Cleveland on Tuesday at his request. He had spent the
entire season at Triple-A Columbus after failing to win a spot in Clevelands
rotation during spring training. After working through early season injuries,
Matsuzaka had pitched well in recent weeks, going 4-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 54
strikeouts in 10 starts for the Clippers since July 2. He was 5-8 with a 3.92
ERA in 19 minor league starts overall. The game against the Tigers will be
Matsuzakas first major league appearance since he went 1-7 with an 8.28 ERA in
11 starts for Boston last year. Matsuzaka made his major league debut in 2007
after the Red Sox won a lucrative competition for his services from Japans Seibu
Lions. He got off to a fine start, winning 33 games and a World Series ring
during his first two seasons in the majors. Matsuzaka has been slowed by elbow
issues since 2009, and he won only 17 games over the past four seasons for the
Red Sox. He underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery in 2011. He lost out to
Scott Kazmir in a battle for the fifth spot in Clevelands rotation during spring
training. Then he was hampered by a strained oblique muscle while in the minors
before returning to better form. Matsuzaka is 50-37 with a 4.52 ERA in 117
career games. The Mets said they will announce a corresponding roster move
before Friday nights game against Detroit.

. -- The proud fathers huddled near the Dallas Stars dressing room, smiling,
laughing and telling stories while wearing replica green sweaters of their sons
team.A day after blowing a three-goal lead in a disappointing 6-5 shootout loss
to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle was blunt
about the stress that comes from a game like the one played Wednesday night. "I
dont sleep well - I get stress headaches," he told reporters. "I get a lot of
things that you guys probably never experienced. "Theres an adrenaline that
comes with (coaching), but also pretty big lows & things like last night
bring you to earth in a hurry." Of the problems coming out of Wednesday nights
loss was the Leafs inability to generate offence in the third period, as Toronto
didnt register a single shot in the third period and in overtime. Needless to
say, 25 minutes of shot-less hockey didnt sit well with Carlyle. Asked if he
ever had a shot-less period as a player or a coach, Carlyle was again a
matter-of-fact about it. "Probably," he said. "Forgot about it in a hurry,
though." Carlyle looked to the ";snowball effect with the penalties," that the
Leafs took in a game that saw them outchance the Penguins 11-9 after two periods
before their offensive collapse in the final frame.

Penguins five goals in regulation were scored on the power play, meaning a
defensive effort was also wanting for the second game in a row. The Leafs took a
6-0 drubbing at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Air Canada Centre
on Monday night. "Obviously, weve given up 11 goals in two games and thats not
going to cut it," said Carlyle. "Thats not going to work in the NHL." Still,
Carlyle is convinced that his team can be better and knows that its his job as
coach to ensure that it will. "Were salesmen, simple as that - coaches - and
were selling a program that we believe in," he explained. "We can play to a
higher level." The Leafs will next have the opportunity to find that level on
Friday night when they visit the Buffalo Sabres.
