VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella has a lot of
admiration for his backup goalie.
Eder Portugal Jersey . Fans at Rogers Arena
finally got to see Eddie Lack for themselves. The 25-year-old Swedish rookie
didnt disappoint in his first-ever home appearance Monday, backstopping
Vancouver with 31 saves for his first NHL shutout as the Canucks downed the
Carolina Hurricanes 2-0. With No. 1 goalie Roberto Luongo getting the night off,
Lack continued his steady play in helping Vancouver to a fifth straight win.
"The thing I like most about Eddie is just his presence. I think he settles the
team down," said Tortorella. "Theres not a lot of extra movement in his game.
"He doesnt get rattled." Lack usually plays the second game of back-to-backs in
place of Luongo and got the nod with Mondays contest coming on the heels of
Sundays 3-1 home victory over the Colorado Avalanche. He was solid, if not
spectacular, on a night where the Canucks kept the Hurricanes to the outside.
"The guys did an unbelievable job," said Lack. "I wouldnt say that I was
nervous. It was more excitement." And most importantly after his fourth win of
the campaign, he has the confidence of his head coach. "I hope it continues. As
a coach youre looking at the present but youre also looking at the future, too,
as you go through a long year with a condensed schedule that we have with the
Olympics," said Tortorella. "Huge game for him tonight. First home game for him
-- I thought he handled himself tremendously." Christopher Tanev and
Jannik Hansen, into an empty net, scored for Vancouver (18-10-5), while
Chris Higgins added two assists. Tanev and Lack were roommates in the American
Hockey League before making the jump to the NHL, so it was only fitting the
former provided the game winner for the latters first career shutout. "Im happy
for him," said Tanev. "Ive known him for four years now. Hes an awesome guy and
its an incredible moment for him." Justin Peters made 24 stops for Carolina
(13-13-5), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. "I think as a team
we deserved a better fate," said Peters. "We played the right way, we had some
chances, just give credit to their team. Lack was playing well." With Vancouver
nursing a 1-0 lead after Tanev opened the scoring in the first period, Lack made
two glove saves early in the third, including a hot shot off the stick of
Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe. Ryan Kesler had a chance to stretch Vancouvers
lead a few moments later, but fired wide on a 2-on-1 with Mike Santorelli.
Carolina made a push in the dying minutes, with Hurricanes captain Eric Staal
coming the closest, but Lack was there to the shut the door before Hansen scored
into an empty net. "I thought we were coming on," said Carolina head coach
Kirk Muller. "You have to fight for your opportunities and in the second we got
going and the third we got a lot of juice but they are not giving up a lot of
chances." Lacks last start came in the Canucks 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes
in Raleigh, N.C., on Dec. 1 and he watched as Vancouver gave him a 1-0 lead
early in the first on Monday night. Tanev collected a feed from fellow
defenceman Dan Hamhuis and fired a snapshot from the point that found its way
through traffic past Peters at 3:35 for his second of the season. Hamhuis then
jumped into the rush with Canucks shorthanded, but fired wide of Peters goal.
Then with Vancouver still down a man, Peters was forced to make a pad stop on
Kesler, two more saves on Hamhuis and then another on Henrik Sedin as the
Canucks No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit buzzed around the Hurricanes zone. The
visitors started to find their legs in the second period, but found it difficult
to get much going against the tight-checking Canucks. In one of the few moments
of action, Lack was forced to come up big off the rush, stopping Riley Nash and
Patrick Dwyer in quick succession. "I think it was just as boring a game to play
as it was to watch," said Kesler. "Those are the games we have to win, though.
They didnt give us much and we didnt give them much and Eddie made the saves
when he had to." Former Canucks forward Manny Malhotra played in Vancouver for
the first time as a the member of the Hurricanes. The Canucks shut Malhotra down
after nine games last season, saying they were concerned for the 33-year-olds
health following a serious eye injury during the 2010-11 season. Malhotra got an
American League Hockey tryout with Carolinas affiliate this season before
getting called up to the big club. He made his debut Nov. 1 against the Tampa
Bay Lightning. "Its obviously disappointing we didnt get the result we wanted,"
said Malhotra, who spent three season with Vancouver. "We felt we carried the
play for most of the game, we were effective getting puck in deep, getting
sustained pressure on them, but Lack saw a lot of pucks tonight. We need to do a
better job being in the goalies eyes and battling in front of their net." Notes:
The Canucks dont play again until Friday when they welcome the Edmonton Oilers.
Vancouver then hosts Boston on Saturday night. It will mark the Bruins first
visit to Rogers Arena since their victory in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup
final. ... Carolina plays at Edmonton on Tuesday.
Hugo Almeida Jersey . Detroit and Boston are
deadlocked, 1-1, and Tigers manager Jim Leyland could be forgiven if he was
caught rationalizing instead of dissecting how his club could blow a 5-1 lead
late in Game 2.
Andre Almeida Portugal Jersey . According the
Toronto Star, a knee injury will keep Sundin out of the lineup, which
includes former teammates Gary Roberts, Darcy Tucker, Tie Domi and
Curtis Joseph.

. Aaron Harrison scored a 22 points for Kentucky (6-1), which has won four in a
row following a Nov. 12 loss to current No. 1 Michigan State. Julius Randle
overcame a scoreless first half and added his sixth double-double in as many
games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. With less than a week until the NHL Trade

From Pierre LeBrun While Anaheim GM Bob Murray said earlier this season he was
not going to trade Jonas Hiller despite the fact hes an unrestricted free agent
on July 1, some sources have told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that Murray
might be willing to move another goalie. LeBrun doesnt think John Gibson or
Frederik Andersen are on the block, so by process of elimination, Viktor Fasth
might be an option. Hes signed for another season at $2.9 million. Meanwhile,
Washington Capitals GM George McPhee told LeBruun that his priority is still
finding a suitor for Martin Erat. "The only thing Im working on that has to be
done is moving (Martin) Erat," Caps GM George McPhee told LeBrun on ESPN.com.
"There are some teams interested. He still wants out. Id love to be able to do
it this weekend. But well see." Where the Edmonton Oilers are concerned, LeBrun
hears that winger Ales Hemsky is getting decent traction on the market and that
its a guarantee he gets dealt before Wednesday. LeBrun also says that veteran
winger Ryan Smyth and Nick Schultz could be moved to contenders. Finally, theres
no contract extension on the horizon for pending unrestricted free agent
David Legwand, but with a full no-movement clause, Nashville Predators GM Poile
says theres limit in his ability to explore the trade market. Unless an offer
blows Poile away and is something Legwand wants, theres a good chance hell stay.
In an update on the Vancouver Canucks, LeBrun writes that the Philadelphia
Flyers could be interested in centre Ryan Kesler or defenceman Alexander Edler.
If Kesler is in their sights, LeBrun imagines that the Canucks asking price in
any Kesler deal would start with Brayden Schenn. But hes not sure the Flyers
would go there. Crunch Time For Phillips? TSN Hockey Darren Dreger tweeted
Friday that the Ottawa Senators contract talks with defenceman Chris Phillips
are expected to continue. He adds that a trade is still an option, with the
Boston Bruins believed to be among teams with interest. Eyes On Brodeur? Randy
Miller of NJ.com writes that Chicago Blackhawks director of player personnel
Pierre Gauthier and pro scout Dennis Bonvie attended Thursday nights Devils-Blue
Jackets game, as well as Minnesota Wild assisttant general manager Jim Nill.
Adrien Silva Jersey. Miller mentions that,
according to rumours, both teams have been linked to Martin Brodeur. Still
Shopping Around Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Sun wrote this week that the
Senators could be interested in St. Louis Blues winger Chris Stewart and adds
that the team likely wont be involved in the race for for Thomas Vanek and
Matt Moulson unless the asking price goes down. Garrioch also reports that
theres been interest in forward Milan Michalek. The Sun story says its not known
if hes talked contract with GM Bryan Murray and a decision may have to be made
before Wednesday. Ward Off? Tough decisions lie ahead for Carolina Hurricanes
general manager Jim Rutherford, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.
Dreger says that the team is open to trading any one of its three goaltenders
ahead of Wednesdays trade deadline, including veteran Cam Ward. The Hurricanes
have 61 points through 59 games this season and sit five points out of the
eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Market For Mez? Philly.com writer Sam
Carchidi writes that Flyers GM Paul Holmgren faces a tough decision on pending
UFS defenceman Andrej Meszaros - trade him or keep him for the stretch run.
Carchidi adds that the Boston Bruins - without Dennis Seidenberg for the season
- are among the teams reportedly interested and that Bruins captain Zdeno Chara
could be nudging the Bruins to add Meszaros. Carchidi also speculates that the
Flyers could get a third-round pick or a prospect for Meszaros. No Big Sales In
Sunrise Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon may be a seller, but he wont be
conducting an all-out fire sale, writes George Richards of the Miami Herald.
"Were going to do whats best for the Panthers to build a championship team,"
Tallon said during the recent Olympic break. "Were not blowing this thing up. If
we can sell some assets to get better, well do that. It depends what happens in
the next few weeks. Well be aggressive either way." Theres ample trade
speculation surrounding pending UFAs Tim Thomas, Brad Boyes and Tom Gilbert, but
Tallon said all three, deserve to stick around if they so wish. "Those guys have
had good years and deserve the chance to stay," he said. "Im happy with the way
theyve played, happy with their professionalism." Richards adds that other free
agents the Panthers could offer include Marcel Goc, Mike Weaver and
Dmitry Kulikov.
