LOUISVILLE, Ky.
Adidas Stan Smith Argento . -- This was one
dominant performance, and Teddy Bridgewater and No. 7 Louisville think they can
perform even better. Its definitely a nice problem to have heading into
conference action. Bridgewater threw four touchdown passes and Louisvilles
defence allowed a school-record 30 yards during a 72-0 wipeout of Florida
International on Saturday. It was the highest scoring game for the Cardinals
(4-0) since a 73-10 victory over Murray State in 2007. They matched the schools
fifth-largest margin of victory while recording their first shutout since a 26-0
win over Connecticut in 2010. Asked afterward if the Cardinals victory was the
most complete effort he has seen, Bridgewater said: "As a team, yes. But we feel
we have a little way to go and continue to get better each and every day. "Well
take this win and build off that." The margin might have been even worse if not
for a clock issue in the second half. Gerald Austin, the co-ordinator of
officials for Conference USA, acknowledged in a statement that the clock was
allowed to run at times when it should have been stopped. FIU coach Ron Turner
"made a comment to one of the officials that, given the amount of injuries and
the limited numbers of players he had available, he wanted to run the ball in
the second half," Austin said in a release. "One official misinterpreted that
comment. "After reviewing the tape there were five times that the clock should
have been stopped and it did not. Four times were on first down and one play
where the runner went out of bounds, based on a quick review of the video."
Austin and Turner both said the coach never requested a running clock. "I did
notice it was going quicker," Turner said. "First of all, I dont have the
authority to request it. I wish I had the authority. Im not saying I wouldnt
have, you know, but I did not request it." Bridgewater hit DeVante Parker for
two TD passes and Gerald Christian and Eli Rogers for one apiece before Will
Gardner came on and passed to Michaelee Harris for another score in the fourth
quarter. Dominique Brown, Senorise Perry, Michael Dyer and Brandon Radcliff
rushed for TDs. Charles Gaines returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a
touchdown, and recovered a muffed punt to set up Bridgewaters second TD pass in
the second quarter. Meanwhile, Louisvilles defence didnt allow a first down
until early in the second quarter and just two overall, also a program record.
FIU converted just 1 of 13 third-down chances. Louisville coach Charlie Strong
believes that kind of effort will eventually result in perfection. "We try to
reach that level and were going to get there," Strong said. "The way you
practice, you feel like that (being perfect). ... I tell players all the time
just try to give your best, thats all were looking for each and every down."
Bridgewater had 212 yards on 17-of-22 passing, part of Louisvilles 464-yard
effort against winless FIU (0-4). It was another efficient performance for the
junior quarterback. A week after tossing just one touchdown pass against
in-state rival Kentucky, Bridgewater threw for three scores by halftime and
added another in the third quarter. That got the Cardinals rolling toward the
offensive performance they wanted in their final game before travelling to
Temple for their American Athletic Conference opener on Oct. 5. "It was just a
great overall performance in all three phases of the game," Bridgewater said.
"We just went out today and competed and played a complete game." It was a much
different outcome than the previous two games in the series. The schools had
split two prior meetings, with each earning seven-point road wins. Louisville
won 28-21 in Miami last year. The Cardinals were 42-point favourites for this
one, with overwhelming advantages in every statistical category. And it went as
expected. Four of Louisvilles eight first-half possessions began at midfield or
in Panthers territory. The Cardinals converted three of those chances into a
17-0 lead. Bridgewater hit Parker for a 3-yard touchdown pass that was initially
ruled incomplete. The call was reversed after a video review showed the receiver
got his right foot down in the end zone while making his second acrobatic TD
catch in as many weeks. John Wallace added a 26-yard field goal and Perry had a
26-yard run off left tackle to keep the roll going. It was just more of the same
as the game wore on. Browns 77-yard run set up his 1-yard TD dive in the second
quarter and Bridgewater completed four passes for 68 yards on another scoring
drive, connecting with Parker for 6 yards for his third TD. Another nightmarish
game for FIU continued into the third quarter, with Gaines returned the
second-half kickoff for another touchdown. Louisville has 23 players from South
Florida, including Bridgewater, so the Panthers were more than familiar with the
Cardinals personnel. But they lacked the talent to keep up with Louisville,
which led 38-0 at the break. "Nothing will surprise me with this team," Turner
said of Louisville. "Theyre a great football team all the way around. There are
no weak areas. Theyre very well coached, they play hard and they have
exceptional athletes."

SEATTLE -- Two days after his baserunning error cost Tampa Bay, Sean Rodriguez
atoned for his mistake with a key pinch hit. Rodriguez hit a go-ahead single in
the eighth inning on Sunday and the Rays rallied past the Seattle Mariners 4-1
Sunday to build their wild-card edge. "I (will) definitely sleep better now,"
said a relieved Rodriguez about the cross country flight home. "Considering that
happened only two days ago, you dont usually get an opportunity right away.
Thats instant gratification. Instant redemption. Im very fortunate." Rodriguez
had been picked off second late in the game on Friday in the Rays loss that
night. The Rays lead Baltimore and Cleveland, who both lost, by two games for
the second AL wild-card spot. Trailing 1-0, Tampa Bay scored three times in the
eighth. Evan Longoria was hit by a pitch from Yoervis Medina (4-5) to start the
inning and Luke Scott walked. James Loney followed with a tying double that
landed just inside the right-field line. Rodriguez, hitting for Matt Joyce,
singled sharply up the middle off new reliever Oliver Perez to score Scott.
Loney also came home when centre fielder Abraham Almonte bobbled the ball for an
error. The Rays began their 10-game road trip in sole possession of the first
wild-card spot and a four-game lead on the second position. Tampa Bay completed
the swing at just 3-7. The Rays contend, though, that the record on the road
trip is less important than the momentum they grabbed with the win Sunday. "The
thing is, everybody goes through bad moments," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.
"Everybody does. Every team out theres gone through bad moments this year. Ours
is just occurring right now. A lot of it is its a tough trip. Its a tough trip.
"So it was kind of a buzz saw moment. We kind of survived it in a sense. We get
to go back home. Again, of course you got to believe. I believe every moment of
every day. I never lost faith in any of this. Youre just looking for that moment
when you can break through again. It (happened) ttoday.
Adidas Zx Flux Nere e Blu. " Rays starter
Matt Moore got a no-decision despite tossing 6 1-3 innings of one-run ball. The
left-hander allowed four hits, walked three and struck out three. Moore hasnt
lost since June 14, a span of nine decisions. "Had really good fastball
velocity, I thought he maintained it pretty much the entire gamem," Maddon said.
"Curveball and changeup were there, but I think he actually pitched with his
fastball well today." Jake McGee (4-3) got two outs and the win. Fernando Rodney
closed for his 33rd save in 41 chances. The Rays picked up an insurance run in
the ninth on an RBI double by Desmond Jennings, but still left the bases loaded.
Tampa Bay also squandered a chance with the bags full in the seventh, as
pinch-hitter Delmon Young grounded into a double play and Ben Zobrist flew out
to end the frame without putting a run on the board. The Rays went 4 for 10 with
runners in scoring position on Sunday, but still only hit .177 (17 for 96) in
those spots during the road trip. Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez pitched into
the seventh, blanking the Rays on four hits and working around four walks. "I
thought Erasmo was good," Mariners skipper Eric Wedge said. "I loved his
aggressiveness early in the game and he was able to hang on to it and sustain
it." Kendrys Morales led off the Seattle second with his 20th homer of the
season and 99th of his career. It was just one of five hits the Mariners were
able to record. NOTES: Rays SS Yunel Escobar did not start for the first time
since July 21. He pinch-hit in the eighth. Maddon said Sundays pitching matchup
gave him a good excuse to sit Escobar, who he wants to keep from completely
wearing down by the end of the season. ... Seattle 2B Nick Franklin was not in
the lineup on Sunday, a day after taking a knee to the head while attempting to
field a fly ball. Wedge said the decision was not entirely based on Saturdays
collision, though, and Franklin is fine. Franklin struck out pinch-hitting in
the ninth.
