CHICAGO -- Try as they might, the Chicago Bulls couldnt get Loul Deng his first triple-double. No matter, the Bulls still won handily. Deng had 19 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and five steals to lead Chicago to a 97-73 victory over Utah on Friday night that snapped the Bulls two-game skid and kept the Jazz winless. Carlos Boozer added 18 points, Joakim Noah had 14 and Derrick Rose 12 for the Bulls. "I think we tried like five times (to get the triple-double for Deng), but it didnt work out," Rose said. "When Tibs (head coach Tom Thibodeau) brought him out, the fans got kind of upset, but if anything, Im super proud of his performance tonight." The Bulls dominated in the paint, scoring 56 points to 22 for Utah. Overall, Chicago outshot Utah 52.8 per cent to 29.8 per cent in winning its sixth straight against the Jazz. "I thought there was a lot of unselfish play, guys making the extra pass," Thibodeau said. "I thought the screen was a lot better, hitting the open man, running the floor, a great effort defensively, and thats what its going to take." The Jazz (0-6) are off to their worst start since their debut NBA season in New Orleans in 1974-75, when they lost their first 11 games. "We have to make sure that we dont feel sorry for ourselves," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "We have to just keep fighting. Were struggling. Were in a bad spot right now. Theyre a good defensive team. We made them look real good tonight, shooting 29 per cent." Chicago built its biggest lead of the first half at 38-22 with 8:10 left in the second quarter and never looked back. The Bulls took their biggest lead at 89-60 with 8:39 left in the game. With the game in hand, Thibodeau gave his reserves plenty of playing time, and four of the Bulls starters (Rose, Boozer, Noah and Jimmy Butler) played 28 or less minutes. Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 15 points, while Derrick Favours and Alec Burks had 10 points apiece, and Rudy Gobert grabbed 12 rebounds. "(Were) frustrated, frustrated," Hayward said. "(Weve) got to find some way to get the job done. We just got to get through this real rough patch were going through. If you cant score the basketball, it just puts too much pressure on your defence." Chicago jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, backed by five points from Rose, but the Jazz got back to 9-7, the closest they would get in the game. Chicago then went on a 21-11 streak to close the first quarter ahead 30-18. The Bulls outshot the Jazz 72.2 per cent (13 of 18) to 33.3 per cent (7 of 21) in the opening quarter. "I thought the first quarter was terrific and that set the tone for the game," Thibodeau said. "Our starters made sure that the group functioned well together and that was a big plus for us." Utah never got closer than eight points the rest of the way, shooting a 27.7 per cent (13 of 47) in the first half. Chicago made 60.6 per cent (20 of 33) of its shots in the first half and led 51-40 at intermission. Things didnt get much better for the Jazz in the second half. Before the game, Corbin said fatigue had been an issue with his young team thus far, and that showed once again in the final two quarters. Even with the win, Thibodeau was not completely happy with the game, particularly turnovers. Chicago coughed up the ball 21 times, leading to 13 Utah points. "We still have a lot of questions we have to (answer)," Thibodeau said. "One game doesnt mean everything is straightened out. We have to take a hard look at ourselves and make the necessary corrections." Added Rose, "Were just trying to iron out the wrinkles and I think were still a good team." NOTES: Thibodeau had long-time friend and Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford on his mind before the game. Clifford had two stents inserted in his heart earlier in the day after complaining of chest pains Thursday night. "Ive been texting with him," Thibodeau said. "Thankfully, hes feeling better. Hes a good friend. Ive worked with him a long time. Im concerned." Assistant coach Patrick Ewing coached the Bobcats as Clifford missed Fridays game against the New York Knicks due to the procedure. ... Corbin, who starred at Chicagos DePaul University, is trying to stay patient with his teams poor start. "Its a process to win," Corbin said. "Were asking more of some guys in certain situations and we have a lot of games back-to-back. Its wearing on the guys." What general manager Dave Nonis called "short and productive" negotiations ended with Kessel signing a US$64-million, eight-year contract on Tuesday.SANTA CLARA, Calif. - From the pick six that closed Candlestick to a pair of goal-line stands in Carolina, it seems like whenever San Francisco needs a big play from its defence one of the 49ers decorated linebackers steps up. With Pro Bowlers NaVorro Bowman, Patrick Willis and Ahmad Brooks playing alongside talented pass rusher Aldon Smith on co-ordinator Vic Fangios defence, the Niners version of the fearsome foursome has played a major part in their advancement to the NFC title game on Sunday night in Seattle. Bowman, Willis, Brooks and Smith have combined for seven sacks, one forced fumble and an interception in road playoff wins in Green Bay and Carolina that set up the showdown with the Seahawks with a spot in the Super Bowl on the line. "We just try to stay together and lead this defence," Bowman said. "We all can do special things that a lot of guys cant do in this league. Vics just done a great job drawing up the right plays and what he wants us to do out there. Were blessed to have all four of us on the same page." What makes this unit so effective is how well they work together. Smith and Brooks are elite pass rushers, able to chase down quarterbacks with their speed and overpower blockers with their strength. Willis and Bowman are the do-everything inside backers, who plug holes against the run, blitz when needed and chase running backs and tight ends in coverage. While Willis came into the year as the most decorated of the bunch as a five-time All-Pro and Smith the most feared with 33 1/2 sacks his first two seasons, it is Bowman who has led the group this season when the Niners needed it most. Smith missed five games to receive substance abuse treatment and Willis showed a few signs of slowing down, turning Bowman into the on-field leader of the group. He was named first-team All-Pro for the third straight season and has been mentioned as a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year after recording a career-high five sacks, two interceptions, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. That earned him the ultimate praise from Willis. "I said, Man, youre having the kind of year that linebackers want to have. I knoww youre most certainly having the kind of year that I would love to have," Willis said.dddddddddddd "Hes my brother. Im always going to be his biggest fan. Hes my teammate. Im just glad to see him do well. When one of us does well, we all do well. Thats how we think as a team." The crowning moment of Bowmans year came in the regular-season home finale against Atlanta. With the 49ers in danger of losing the final scheduled game at Candlestick Park and having their playoff status put in doubt, Bowman delivered one of the most impressive plays of the season. It started with him blitzing up the middle against Matt Ryan. But after getting the centre to commit, Bowman retreated and was in perfect position when Tramaine Brock broke up a slant pass to Harry Douglas. Bowman grabbed the ball out of the air and ran 89 yards for the touchdown that sealed the 34-24 victory and clinched the playoffs for the Niners. "He just comes up big all the time," defensive lineman Ray McDonald said. "Its paying off for him because hes a hard-working guy, hes always on top of his game." Bowman was at it again in Sundays 23-10 win over Carolina, fighting off two blockers before tackling Cam Newton at the 1 late in the second quarter. After a sack by Brooks and another goal-line stop by Bowman, the Panthers had to settle for a field goal. San Francisco drove for the go-ahead score in the closing seconds of the half and never trailed again. That was the second impressive goal-line stand as Brooks stopped Newton on fourth down from the 1 earlier in the second quarter. Back-to-back sacks by Bowman and Brooks knocked the Panthers out of field goal range in the closing minutes of the third quarter in what proved to be their last chance to stay in the game. Throw in an interception earlier in the game by Willis that set up a field goal, and it was a dominating day. "We take pride on keeping teams out of the end zone," Bowman said. "Theyre going to make big plays, theyre NFL players, too. But if we can hold up at the goal line four downs in a row that lets you know were here to play and its going to be a long day." SOCHI, Russia – It was the third game of the Olympics for the Canadians in Torino, Italy when the wall of Martin Gerber emerged in shocking fashion. Gerber stopped each and every one of the 49 shots peppered by Team Canada en route to a highly improbable 2-0 victory for Switzerland. In a two-week tournament like the Olympics, goaltending performances of that caliber have the potential to shock, rattle and awe even the most powerful foes, hindering medal hopes with save after unlikely save. Eight years after Gerber shook up what was an ultimately doomed 2006 Canadian bid – they finished seventh – lies another Swiss goaltender in Jonas Hiller capable of doing the same, if not more, at the Sochi Olympics. "Every year at a tournament like this you need a good goalkeeper to have success," said Andreas Ambuhl, a winger for Switzerland and teammate of Hiller for years with Davos in the Swiss League, "especially a team like us." Switzerland is still buzzing from a silver medal finish at the 2013 World Championships – the now 39-year-old Gerber teaming with Calgary netminder Reto Berra – and though they have no grand illusions about their chances at these Olympics, possession of a goaltender like Hiller poses at least the possibility of a little unlikely noise. Hiller is back to top form in Anaheim after a couple bumpy seasons punctuated by injuries. The 31-year-old stopped 36 of 38 shots in his final game before the Olympics and owns a .943 save percentage in his last five starts. "Theres no doubt," said Swiss head coach Sean Simpson, a Canadian and former Chicago Blackhawks draft pick who has yet to actually coach Hiller during his four-year run as bench boss of Switzerlands national program. "Any of the goalies, they stand on their head they can make a difference in a one-game scenario thats for sure." Simpson would consider a trip to the quarterfinals as success for his squad, which sits in a group with Sweden, Latvia and the Czech Republic. In the past 50 years the Swiss have never finished higher than sixth which they managed during that unlikely 06 run with Gerber at the forefront. Sizzling efforts in goal have the potential to alter the face of the Olympics, both for powerhouses like Canada, who must decide between Carey Price and Roberto Luongo, and lesser limelight squads like the Swiss. Its why Finland still holds dark-horse medal potential despite losing potential captain Mikko Koivu and second centre Valteri Filpulla to injury. With Tuukka Rask, Antii Niemi and Kari Lehtonen as sterling options between the pipes, the Finns have the goods in goal to rattle more than a few cages. It was during those same 06 Olympics in Torino that then-Flyers goaltender and Finnish product Antero Niittymaki carried his country to a silver medal – they fell to Sweden, who was led by Henrik Lundqvist – leading the tournament with a mighty .951 save percentage. One need only remember the heroic efforts of Dominik Hasek in 1998. Hasek allowed just six goals in Nagano – posting a crazy .971 save percentage – willing the Czech Republic to their first and only gold medal. "Theres going to be lots of strong goalies here," said Simpson. "Jonas, hes got a great personality and hes going to give the team a lot of confidence when hes in net there for sure." EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Michigan was making a mess of another game against a heavy underdog, when Desmond Morgan snatched away Connecticuts chance for a huge upset. Morgans one-handed interception in the fourth quarter swung the game Michigans way and the 15th-ranked Wolverines dodged another potentially embarrassing loss with a 24-21 victory against Connecticut on Saturday night. A week after Michigan needed a last-second stand to hold off Akron at the Big House, Brendan Gibbons kicked a 21-yard field goal with 4:36 left to give the Wolverines (4-0) their first lead of the second half. "Were Michigan. We dont play to everyone elses level and for the last two weeks we have. But were going to step it up," defensive end Frank Clark said. Chandler Whitmer threw two touchdown passes and Ty-Meer Brown returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter that put UConn (0-3) up 21-7. Quarterback Devin Gardner turned the ball over three times for Michigan and the Wolverines also muffed a punt inside their 10 that led to a UConn touchdown. Fitzgerald Toussaint carried the offence with 120 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Toussaint broke a 35-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and scored from 12 yards out right after Morgans pick with 9:56 left. Against the Zips, Gardner threw three interceptions and lost a fumble and the Wolverines came away feeling more relieved than victorious. Gardner wasnt much better this week, going 11 for 23 for 97 yards. He ran for 64 yards and a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter. But his defence had to bail him out, specifically Morgan. After star Connecticut linebacker Yawin Smallwood stopped Gardner short on a fourth-and-2 at the Huskies 22 with 11:23 left in the fourth quarter, the record crowd of 42,704 at Rentschler Field was rocking and starting to believe an upset was in the making. But Morgan made the play of the game and one play later Toussaint swept untouched around the left side to make it 21-21 with 9:49 left. Michigan forced a three-and-out on the next series and got the ball back around midfield, but its drive stalled at the 4 and Gibbons made the short kick to give Michigan a three-point lead with 4:36 left. UConns last drive never had a chance. Michigan pushed the Huskies backward and then they came up a few yards short on a fourth-and-29. UConn, playing without leading receiver Shakim Phillips, managed only 206 yards, 159 passing from Whitmer. The Huskies limped into the most high-profile nonconference home game they have ever played, trying to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2001 and take some heat off third-year coach Paul Pasqualoni. But Michigan had three turnovers in the first half that helped give UConn a 14-7 lead. Turnover No. 4 came on its first possession of the second half and put the Wolverines in a deep hole. Gardner tried to sneak on a third-and-short, but as he slid down the line, he bumped into one of his linemen and the ball popped loose. Brown picked up the ball and had a couple of teammates escort him into the end zone for a 21-7 lead less than 2 minutes into the half. Michigan finally responded with a drive, going 75 yards, the final 35 by Toussaint who made it 21-14 with 5:37 left in the third. The Maize and Blues visit to Rentschler Field was a major event in these parts. Former UConn basketball star Ray Allen made the trip and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who grew up in Michigan and almost played for the Wolverines, also took in the game from the athletic directors box. On the field, though, the Huskies didnt appear to be in any condition to challenge Michigan, having already lost at home to Towson and Maryland -- at least without help, and Michigan gave it to the Huskies. Gardner threw a first-quarter interception deep in UConn territory. He redeemed himself later with a 17-yard touchdown run to give Michigan a 7-0 lead with 1:52 left in the first. UConn ended the quarter with one first down. But Michigan couldnt take advantage as the Huskies offence sputtered, and the Huskies tied it at 7 with 3:54 left in the half when Whitmer found Spencer Parker, a former walk-on, for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The third Michigan turnover of the half, a bouncing punt that hit off the leg of DaMario Jones while he was looking the other way, gave UConn the ball at the Wolverines 9 and two plays later Whitmer floated a 7-yard TD pass to Lyle McCombs that put the Huskies up 14-7. Gardner didnt complete a pass in the second quarter and for the second straight week Michigan looked disjointed against a heavy underdog. The Wolverines will go into their off week undefeated -- if not satisfied with their play -- and much to work on http://www.germanynationalshop.com/Jerome-Boateng-Germany-Jersey/ . TORONTO -- Relief came in the form of James Reimer lifting his arms after making a shootout save on Antonie Vermette. By beating the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 in a shootout at Air Canada Centre on Thursday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs shook off the gloom and doom of recent struggles. "It hasnt been a good feeling around here the past couple days," said winger Joffrey Lupul, who scored the shootout winner. "Its funny how even with an ugly, grind-it-out win like that, you come to the rink tomorrow feeling a lot better about yourselves." The Leafs (18-16-3) can feel better about themselves beyond shootout goals by Lupul and James van Riemsdyk and a couple of stops in that competition from Reimer, who made 34 saves in regulation and overtime. Instead, this was a victory to savour for stronger play in regulation and the elimination of the kind of mistakes that led to 10 losses in their previous 13 games. "I thought individually guys really limited our turnovers and the chances we gave up for them to try and get opportunities," said centre Peter Holland, who assisted on Troy Bodies first-period goal. "It just goes to show that when we do execute what we plan on doing, things will fall into place for us." Maybe it was about time. Coach Randy Carlyle spent eight-plus hours at the rink Wednesday with the coaching staff on a day off for players devising what he hoped was a plan to turn the Leafs fortunes around. Presented at the morning skate was a blue print that included a harder forecheck and more aggressive defensive zone play. For the most part, the Leafs followed that against Phoenix (18-10-6). A strong forecheck was evident on Bodies first goal of the season and first in a Leafs uniform, thanks to work from Holland and Jerry DAmigo. The puck got out to defenceman Cody Franson at the point, and Bodie was in a perfect spot to put the rebound in on Canadian Olympic candidate Mike Smith. "(Forechecking is) something weve been stressing," Bodie said. "I think we did a good job of it on the goal. We got a good dump and we had two guys in on it right away and then the third guy joined. We were able to come out with it." Tighter defence than Toronto displayed in a loss two days earlier to the Florida Panthers helped the lead stand up until Martin Hanzal scored 15:08 into the third. Reimer, who started only because Carlyle said Jonathan Bernier was dealing with an unspecified "ailment," was satisfied with how his teammates contained the Coyotes and rebounded from a frustrating loss to Florida. "We all make mistakes," Reimer said. "We sometimes dont show up in a way we want to. I think youre judged on how you respond. I thought we did a great job tonight. We really came collectively and everyone bought in." Reimer turnedd aside attempts from Radim Vrbata and then Vermette in the shootout, but it was Smiths almost-save on van Riemsdyk in the first round that caused a lengthy review.dddddddddddd. Referee Paul Devorski assured Coyotes coach Dave Tippett that "110 per cent" it was in the net, and video review found it inconclusive so the goal stood. "Youve got to take him for his word," Tippett said. Devorski never signalled that it was a goal on the ice, which caused Smith some confusion. "He came and whispered it in my ear like its a goal, and he didnt really give a signal that it was," Smith said. "He made the call, he said he saw it go in. Its unfortunate, but thats the way it goes." Like the Leafs, the Coyotes were satisfied with an improved performance, despite this being their third straight loss. "We definitely took some good things out of that game," said Smith, who made 26 saves. "Its not all bad. We did a lot of good things well in the third period there to give ourselves a chance to get a point. As long as were in games, were giving ourselves a chance to win hockey games, I think well be pleased with it." Toronto didnt play perfectly, but players were nonetheless pleased with not only the result but the five-on-five play throughout regulation. "I thought we were pretty strong for pretty much the full 60 and we did things the right way, so that was definitely an improvement," van Riemsdyk said. "We stayed patient, kept it simple and guys did their job, guys battled hard. It was a good two points." Reimer was critical of his teammates after the loss to the Panthers, saying that some or all of the Leafs players dont show up for the entire game. Given how long he paused before delivering that answer Tuesday night, it was well thought-out. "Obviously I was frustrated, but I try and always answer (with) the way Im feeling -- in an honest way," Reimer said Thursday night. "Whether Im frustrated or whether Im happy, I try and answer objectively. I just answered how I thought I saw it." Relief was all over Reimers face after beating the Coyotes, and his words backed that up. "Really proud of the way the guys worked," he said. ST. LOUIS – Its difficult to imagine Sunday nights fourth game of the World Series unfolding in a more dramatic fashion than Saturdays 5-4 Cardinals win. St. Louis won in walk-off fashion, to take a 2-1 series lead, when Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was ruled to have obstructed with base runner Allen Craig. The game also featured a questionable decision by Boston manager John Farrell to allow his relief pitcher, Brandon Workman, to hit with one out in the ninth inning of a tie game. We also saw two bullpens, both strong at the back end, cough up runs. Set up men Carlos Martinez (St. Louis) and Craig Breslow (Boston) struggled and each of Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara (Boston) and Trevor Rosenthal (St. Louis) allowed inherited runners to score. Tonight is as close as it gets to a must-win for the Red Sox without the math actually requiring a victory. The prospect of being down 3-1 and with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright scheduled to pitch Mondays Game 5 in St. Louis is not appealing to the American League representatives. Game 4 Preview: Pitching Matchup: Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz (Regular season: 12-1, 1.74, 1.025 WHIP in 108.1IP; Playoffs: 3GS: 0-0, 5.40, 1.440 WHIP in 16.2IP) There isnt a St. Louis player whos faced Buchholz in a major league game. Lineup Considerations: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, whose errant throw to third base precipitated the obstruction call against Will Middlebrooks to force home St. Louis winning run in Game 3, will be replaced behind the plate by David Ross. Its more likely that Saltalamacchias offensive struggles have contributed to manager John Farrells decision making. Saltalmacchia has struck out a whopping 19 times in 32 postseason at-bats. Manager John Farrell says his entire bullpen is available for tonights game and also suggested he could turn to Game 2 starter John Lackey for an inning, if necessary. Pitching Matchup: Cardinals RHP Lance Lynn (Regular season: 15-10, 3.97, 1.314 WHIP in 201.2IP; Playoffs: 3G, 2GS, 2-1, 5.40, 1.971 WHIP in 11.2IP) Six Red Sox position players have a combined 15 career big league at-bats against Lynn. Only David Ross has an extra base hit (double). Lineup Considerations: Allen Craig, who scored Game 3s winning run in dramatic fashion, appeared to reinjure his sprained foot on the play. Manager Mike Matheny confirmed Craig underwent an x-ray, which confirmed there were no breaks. Craig will continue to be available in a pinch hit role. Shortstop Pete Kozma, whos hitless in eight World Series at-bats, will sit in favour of Daniel Descalso. Game 4 Prediction: Its hard to get a read on Lance Lynn at the moment. No doubt, hes a talented young pitcher, but hes been vulnerable in this postseason as his numbers suggest. The Red Sox likely will have to piece it together. Clay Buchholz is working through shoulder stiffness, which becomes an increasing problem as the game goes on. If Buchholz is limited to five innings and 80 pitches, or thereabouts, look for Ryan Dempster to back fill. With so many variables, were looking at another game decided by the bullpens and because of that, St. Louis will win and take a stranglehold on the series. Final score: 7-5. Lions announced Wednesday that the club and offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine have mutually agreed to part ways. Chapdelaines offence struggled for long stretches during the second half of the 2013 season after starting quarterback Travis Lulay went down with a shoulder injury. The Lions, who lost in the CFL West Division final to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, were criticized for a lack of imagination under Chapdelaines leadership, with the running game practically non-existent for long stretches. "Jacques has been a big part of our past success," B.C. head coach Mike Benevides said in a statement. "He presided over two championship offences and two most outstanding players during his time with the club and I am grateful for his hard work and dedication during our time together. "At this time however, we agree that it is in the best interest off both parties to proceed in a new direction.dddddddddddd" The 52-year-old started his career with the Lions in 2003 as the teams receivers coach and was promoted to offensive co-ordinator in 2005 under former head coach Wally Buono. After B.C. won the Grey Cup in 2006, Chapdelaine became the offensive co-ordinator of the Edmonton Eskimos. He returned to the Lions the following year as receivers coach and got his old job back as offensive co-ordinator in 2010, helping the team win another Grey Cup in 2011. "After taking some time to reflect on this past season, Ive concluded that both I and the B.C. Lions need a change moving forward," said Chapdelaine, who has been linked to the head coaching job with the expansion Ottawa Redblacks. "It has been a great privilege to work with Lions players, coaches and many other members of this outstanding organization." DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. - Frederick Gaudreau scored twice, including the winner, as the Drummondville Voltigeurs edged the visiting Val-dOr Foreurs 5-4 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. Gaudreau scored his 20th goal of the season 1:14 into overtime for the Voltigeurs (21-11-2), who led 4-2 after 40 minutes before giving up two third period goals. Jerome Verrier, Matthew Boudens and Joe Ratelle added the others. Louick Marcotte, Pierre-Maxime Poudrier, Maxime Presseault and Anthony Richard supplied the scoring for the Foreurs (23-11-1), who had their eight-game win streak halted. Marcotte tacked on two assists for a three-point outing. Louis-Philip Guindon made 25 saves for Drummondville as Val-dOrs Keven Bouchard turned away 28-of-33 shots in a losing cause. The Voltigeurs went 1 for 4 on the power play while the Foreurs scored twice on six chances with the man advantage. --- SAGUENEENS 6 MOOSEHEADS 2 CHICOUTIMI, Que. -- The Sagueneens jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to defeating Halifax. Andrew Schewfelt and Luca Ciampini had a goal apiece for the Mooseheads (23-12-1), who have dropped back-to-back contests. Domenic Graham made 19 saves for the Sagueneens as Halifaxs Kevin Darveau kicked out 32-of-48 shots in defeat. --- PHOENIX 4 TITAN 0 SHERBROOKE, Que. -- Francis Desrosiers stopped all 39 shots he faced as the Phoenix blanked Acadie-Bathurst. That certainly got his attention. Next time in, Morris played with way more determination. Same with the rest of the Phoenix Suns. It was the only way to erase an early 21-point deficit. Morris scored 25 points and Gerald Green added 19, helping the Suns rally for a 103-99 win over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. "We never quit. We came out and fought all the way to the end," Morris said. "Its a great feeling, man." It was hardly one player, either, and the reserves played a big hand, too, outscoring the starters, 64-39. "That just goes to show you what type of team we have," said Green, who tied a career-high with six 3-pointers. "Some nights are not going to be everybodys night. Any given night, somebody can step up on this team and help us win. Thats what it takes. "That shows a lot about our character." First, Green got hot, hitting 3-pointer after 3-pointer. And once the Nuggets spread out their defence in order to stop the long-range shooting, Goran Dragic went to work by driving the lane. He finished with 17 points, including two big layups down the stretch. Steadily, the Suns worked their way back into a contest that looked all but over, especially with the Nuggets up 79-62 with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. But Suns coach Jeff Hornacek kept them on course, kept their confidence high. That did the trick. "Ive got to give coach the credit, he never panicked. He never yelled at us," Green said. "He just kept with it, kept telling us to stick with the plan and its going to work." Wilson Chandler had 15 points for the Nuggets, while J.J. Hickson added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Ty Lawson was in the lineup despite coming down with a stomach bug on Thursday. He was slightly off his game, going 3 of 11 from the floor and finishing with 13 points. "They were down 21 points but they kept fighting," Denver forward Darrell Arthur said. Phoenix tied it 88-all on a layup from Ish Smith -- his only basket of the game -- with 8:21 remaining. Soon after, the Suns took their first lead since scoring tthe opening bucket when Dragic dribbled past Denver defenders for a layup.dddddddddddd From there, it was back and forth until a pair of free throws and a layup from Dragic gave the Suns a four-point lead. With a 102-99 advantage, Phoenix allowed Randy Foye to get a good look at a 3-point attempt, but Foye was off target with 5.9 seconds remaining. Morris sealed the win by making a free throw. A character-building win for the Suns. A demoralizing loss for the Nuggets as they lost their second straight game at Pepsi Center to drop to 7-5 at home on the season. They were a franchise-best 38-3 last season. "Im not very happy, and Ill take the hit for tonights game, for allowing some things in practice to carry over into the game," coach Brian Shaw said. "When it was going good for us in the first half, we were all smiles and played as if the game was over and didnt have a second half to play." Dragic and fellow guard Eric Bledsoe entered the game averaging more than 18 points apiece. They combined for 27, with Dragics biggest buckets arriving down the stretch. For that, he credits Green. "We were hitting those 3s. Then, their players, they were afraid to be in the paint, to leave open our shooters," Dragic said. "Its much easier when you have more space in the paint -- you can create. We did that." At 15-10, the Suns may just be ahead of schedule in terms of turning around a team that had the worst record in the Western Conference last season. "Were winning some games against some good teams and thats giving them confidence and helping to speed up the process a little bit," Hornacek said. NOTES: Both teams return to the court Saturday night. Phoenix hosts the Dallas Mavericks while the Nuggets play the Clippers in Los Angeles. ... The fourth quarter turned into quite a show Markieff Morris and twin Marcus as they combined for 16 points. ... Jordan Hamilton served his one-game suspension for throwing a punch at Oklahoma City centre Steven Adams on Tuesday. ... Nate Robinson picked up a technical foul in the second quarter. ... According to the Nuggets, the 21 points was their largest blown lead at home since Nov. 29, 2002, against Golden State. LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool beat Swansea 4-3 on Sunday to maintain its Premier League title challenge thanks to two goals each from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson. The goals took Liverpools tally in the Premier League this season to 70, overtaking Manchester City as the top scorers, and left the fourth-place team just four points behind league leader Chelsea. However, manager Brendan Rodgers refused to be drawn on Liverpools title hopes. "I think for us, were concentrating on our performance," Rodgers said. "Were just concentrating on winning games. No one is really talking about us for the title anyway. Everything now is about Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal." Sturridges first came in the third minute when he received a through ball from Raheem Sterling before rounding Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and firing into an open goal. The striker then provided the assist for Henderson to double Liverpools lead in the 20th from the edge of the area. Jonjo Shelvey pulled one back for Swansea against his former club three minutes later with a long-range strike that went in off the crossbar. He held his arm up in apology to his former club, a gesture that received applause from the Liverpool fans. But the home supporters were shocked into silence soon after when Wilfried Bony equalized in the 27th minute, with his header from Jonathan De Guzmans free kick taking a slight deflection off Martin Skrtel. Sturridge gave Liverpool a 3-2 lead at halftime when he headed in from close range after a Luis Suarez cross had found him unmarked. Swansea levelled soon after the interval though when Bony scored a penalty after being fouled by Skrtel. Suarez went close to restoring Liverpools lead but Vorm saved well when one-on-one with the striker before De Guzman nearly gave Swansea the lead when he shot just wide from a free kick. Henderson struck the winner after receiving a pass from Suarez. His initial shot was parried by Vorm but the England forward reacted quickest to poke the ball in from close range. Despite the victory, Rodgers is hoping to see an improved defensive display against Southampton next weekend. "At 2-0, we should manage the game better," Rodgers said. "We are obviously very disappointed with the goals we conceded." Swansea manager Garry Monk tried to take the positives out of the defeat. "I cant complain about the effort from my players," Monk said. "Going forward, I think its a confidence boost to them that they can come to somewhere like this - where a lot of people thought they would wipe the floor with us, the way theyve been dismantling teams here - and we were in the game right up until the final whistle." CARACAS, Venezuela -- Canada will have to settle for international experience instead of a berth at the 2014 Basketball World Cup. The mens team lost 73-67 to Argentina at the FIBA Americas Championship on Sunday, ruining Canadas chances of qualifying for one of two spots at the World Cup. For head coach Jay Triano, Canadas downfall was in his young teams relative inexperience at the international level. "Our three best players are 22, 22 and 23 years old," said Triano, referencing Cory Joseph, Tristan Thompson and Andrew Nicholson. "Were going up against men who have played this game for a long time and have played at a high level for a long time. "Thats why were here. Were here to get the experience and play against these guys so when were that age, we can compete at the same level and understand the game that much better." Joseph had 19 points for Canada (3-4) in a losing effort, while Nicholson added 17 of his own. Thompson finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Luis Sccola had 28 points and seven rebounds for Argentina while Selem Safar added 18 points off the bench.dddddddddddd Facundo Campazzo chipped in with 10 points and eight assists. Canada led 36-32 at halftime, but Argentina stormed out of the gate in the third quarter and led 61-56 heading to the fourth quarter. Despite the elimination loss, Triano said Canadas play at the tournament bodes well for the future of the national program. "We didnt come here thinking we were just going to get experience, we came here hoping to win. It didnt happen but the experience was gained," Triano said. "The future is still bright and I hope the rest of Canada continues to back these guys and not turn on them because we didnt qualify for the world championships." Canada had four NBA players on its roster at the tournament. Nicholson plays for the Orlando Magic, Joseph is with the San Antonio Spurs, Thompson is a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and centre Joel Anthony is on the Miami Heat. NEW YORK -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson was fined $60,000 by the NFL on Friday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey last Sunday. The fine is the fourth this season for Goldson. He was fined $30,000 for a hit on the New York Jets Jeff Cumberland in Week 1. He had his one-game suspension for a hit on New Orleans Darren Sproles the following week overturned but had to pay $100,000. Goldson was also suspended one game without pay for a hit on Atlantas Roddy White last month. St. Louis linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar was fined $21,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit. Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was docked $15,750 for roughing the passer after the league said he "unnecessarily" drove Cleveland quarterback Jason Campbell to the ground, "landing on him with his full weight." Richardson is appealing the fine. Buffalo rookie wide receiver Roberts Woods was fined $15,750 for punching Miami safety Reshad Jones in the third quarter of the Bills 19-0 win. Batiste, who briefly signed with the Eskimos in 2006, has spent time with several NFL teams including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins.BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sidney Crosby still has Ryan Millers number after scoring a highlight-reel go-ahead goal in Pittsburghs 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. Thats fine with Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, so long as that trend doesnt continue once the Winter Games open next week. "I was cheering the goal this time," said Bylsma, who will be switching hats in Sochi, where he will be coaching Miller on the U.S. team. "It did dawn on me as Sid was going in and he scores that goal." Crosby, Canadas captain, had a goal and assist in a pre-Olympic tuneup in which the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins (40-15-2) set a franchise record by reaching 40 wins in 57 games. That eclipsed the previous mark of 40 wins in 65 games in 1995-96. Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Brian Gibbons and minor-league call-up Harry Zolnierczyk also scored in a game the Penguins overcame a 1-0 deficit. Drew Stafford scored for the NHLs worst team, and Miller finished with 29 saves. Buffalo (15-33-8) dropped to 4-9-4 in its past 17 and winless in its last eight home games (0-5-3). Thats the Sabres worst home stretch since opening the season 0-8-1. For Crosby, he scored his first goal in six games and also ended a two-game point drought. That it happened against Buffalo and Miller shouldnt come as a surprise. Crosby has at least a point in all 14 trips to Buffalo (9 goals and 13 assists). And he has been particularly sharp at beating Miller, including the gold-medal winning overtime goal in Canadas 3-2 victory at the Vancouver Games four years ago. "He made some big saves tonight," Crosby said in defence of Miller. "Cant blame him. He held his team in it. And we scored some nice goals." The performance didnt sit well with Miller, but he doesnt think it will carry over to the Olympics. "Its game-by-game. Stuff happens out there and you reset," Miller said. Sabres coach Ted Nolan had his goalies back. "That had nothing to do with Ryan tonight," Nolan said. "It was the guys in front of him. Our team, we need everyone. We had a couple of guys no-show tonight." That was evident on Crosbys goal, which came on the power play 2:08 into the seconnd period, and put the Penguins up 2-1.dddddddddddd Immediately after Marc-Andre Fleury stopped Buffalos Brian Flynn in close, Crosby circled his own net and built up a head of steam by driving up the left wing. Accepting Matt Niskanens pass while crossing centre, Crosby didnt break stride in cutting between Flynn and Mike Weber. He then drove toward the net and snapped a shot just inside the top right corner. Neal joked that hes seen Crosby score goals like that so many times that he didnt even celebrate, but instead simply headed to the bench. Miller had no chance some 17 minutes later, when Malkin scored on the breakaway. Pouncing on Marcus Folignos turnover inside the Penguins blue line, Malkin streaked past flat-footed defender Jamie McBain. Driving in alone on Miller, he faked going right and went left to deposit the puck in the open side. Miller is one of the three U.S. goalies selected to play at Sochi, and the game against the Penguins was regarded his last chance to make a firsthand impression on Bylsma. Bylsma has yet to name his starter, and maintained that Millers performance on Wednesday would have no influence on his decision. Miller was coming off his worst outing of the season. He was benched after giving up five goals on 27 shots through two periods in a 7-1 loss at Colorado on Saturday. He allowed three goals on 28 shots through two periods before the floodgates opened in the third. Gibbons scored off a face off, and Neal on a transition break. "The first period we werent very sharp," Crosby said. "Yeah, we took a little bit of time to get going, but once we did, I felt like we did grab a lot of momentum there." NOTES: The Sabres played without D Tyler Myers, who hurt his right leg in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Monday. Coach Ted Nolan has not ruled out Myers from playing in their pre-Olympic break finale at Ottawa on Thursday. ... Zolnierczyk stepped into the lineup a day after being recalled from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He replaced Taylor Pyatt (lower body), who was hurt in a 2-1 overtime win over Ottawa on Monday. ... The Penguins completed a three-game series sweep of the Sabres, and improved to 12-4 in their past 16 meetings.
