The roster turnover is about to begin. This past year, he quietly put together another solid campaign, recording a career-high 104 tackles. Also, Hitchens played in all 16 games for the third straight season.

What’s Been Bad: Despite racking up plenty of tackles and not missing a game, Hitchens hasn’t really taken a huge step forward like we might have anticipated by this point in his career. He has moved positions somewhat from the outside to the middle, but there haven’t been a ton of catalytic, game-changing plays. That’s really the only knock on him, considering he has gotten better each year.  

2016 Highlight: Against the Vikings in early December, Hitchens had arguably his best game of his career – at least since his rookie season. But in<a href="http://www.officialchargesshop.com/shop-by-players-chris-watt-jersey-c-1_8.html">http://www.officialchargesshop.com/shop-by-players-chris-watt-jersey-c-1_8.html</a>  Minnesota, he recorded 13 tackles, including one for loss, a sack and deflected a pass in the Cowboys’ dramatic Thursday night win on the road.

What’s Next: What’s next will be a little tricky for Hitchens, who has nearly tripled his salary for this upcoming season because of the NFL’s pay system that rewards mid-round draft picks in the last year of their original deals. His role on the team, though, is uncertain because of the status of Jaylon Smith, who continues to rehab his injury. If healthy, Smith figures to start at middle linebacker, but the Cowboys are still unsure what is timetable will be, or if he can ever fully recover from the injury that dropped him into the second round of last year’s draft. INDIANAPOLIS – Just minutes after<a href="http://www.authenticnflraidersshop.com/shop-by-players-bo-jackson-jersey-c-2_13.html">Bo Jackson Authentic Jersey</a>  Jim Irsay introduced Chris Ballard as his new general manager in late January, a surprising off-season need was about to surface.

Pat McAfee, one of the NFL’s elite punters, was going to inform Irsay that he was retiring at the age of 29.

Add one more item to the immediate off-season plan for Ballard.

The retirement of McAfee was something Ballard could not have foreseen.

Ballard had never met McAfee before his hiring in Indianapolis, but still wanted to reach out to the greatest punter in franchise history.

“Pat was a great player for the Colts,” Ballard said on Wednesday at the NFL Combine.

Upgrading the inside linebacker position was always thought to be a positional area to address coming into 2017.

Punter, while probably not at the same level of importance, is now also on the off-season need list.

“(McAfee) is a difficult guy to replace, but we are working on it,” Ballard said at the Combine.

“We will work through it and we will find an adequate replacement moving forward. We have our special teams and our scouts and we are all working hard on finding that replacement."

MOBILE, Ala. – Few offensive linemen <a href="http://www.coltsshopauthentic.com/shop-by-players-12-andrew-luck-jersey-c-1_4.html">12 Andrew Luck Womens Jersey</a> left a mark on Alabama's brilliant pass-rushing trio of Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams and Jonathan Allen, three dominant players who will likely be all off the board in the first two rounds of the draft.

But one player on the Crimson Tide's schedule left an impression.

Forrest Lamp, the Western Kentucky left tackle who has also been mentioned as a potential first-round pick, gave Alabama's best pass rushers all they could handle. 

"He didn't make many mistakes, technically sound, good competitor," Anderson said. "He was probably the best tackle I played all year."

Lamp's performance against Alabama was only the latest in a long line of eye-opening showings against top-tier schools. Lamp acquitted himself well against LSU's Arden Key in 2015, took on Illinois's Jihad Ward the year before and played games against Tennessee and Kentucky in his first two seasons on campus.

The body of work Lamp put together has made him one of the most coveted offensive linemen in the draft. 

"Any time you get praise from some of the best players in the country – and those guys definitely are, Tim Williams, Jonathan Allen and Ryan Anderson –any time some of the best players in the country give you a shout-out, it's going to help," Lamp said.

The question now is what position Lamp will play in the NFL. 

Lamp, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighed in at 305 pounds, has shorter arms (31 1/8 inches) than some teams like at tackle, where a blocker has to <a href="http://www.officialchargesshop.com/shop-by-players-brandon-mebane-jersey-c-1_6.html">Brandon Mebane Jersey</a> be able to keep NFL edge rushers from getting into his body.

His arms, plus his versatility, has prompted many analysts to project a move to guard, where Lamp might be the top player available at the position, along with Indiana's Dan Feeney, even though he hasn't played guard since he was a freshman at Western Kentucky.

"Every team's different," Lamp said. "Beauty's in the eye of the beholder. For some teams it's tackle, for some it's guard; some see me as a center." 

The New Orleans Saints wanted to take a guard in the draft last year, but a couple of their targets came off the board at the end of the first round, and depending on free agency, the position could be on their radar again.

Veteran Jahri Evans played well in his 11th season at the position, but he's a free agent at the age of 33, and at some point in the future, the plan has been left guard Andrus Peat is expected to move to right tackle to take over for Zach Strief whenever<a href="http://www.authenticcowboyssale.com/shop-by-players-anthony-hitchens-jersey-c-2_17.html">http://www.authenticcowboyssale.com/shop-by-players-anthony-hitchens-jersey-c-2_17.html</a>  his career's done, although Peat seems more comfortable on the left side.  

Peat's an example of a recent trend of college tackles who have started at guard in the NFL. Both Washington's Brandon Scherff and Dallas's Zack Martin were college left tackles who have become standout guards in the NFL, and although there's a transition to be expected, Lamp might be next.

For Lamp, the biggest difference between the two positions is the speed of the game. 

"How fast everything happens," Lamp said. "At tackle, I've got three or four steps before I even make contact, where at guard it's as soon as I set."

Except for three games as a freshman at Western Kentucky, Lamp has always been a tackle, but he's confident he can make the switch if a team needs him to play inside at the next level. 

"It'll be a little less comfortable, just because I'm not used to it," Lamp said. "But I feel like I'm versatile enough that if I practiced <a href="http://www.authenticcowboysstore.com/shop-by-players-barry-church-jersey-c-2_36.html">http://www.authenticcowboysstore.com/shop-by-players-barry-church-jersey-c-2_36.html</a> there for a week or two, went through live practices and feel my way through everything, I can be just fine."

More than fine, if the Alabama defensive line has anything to say about it. 

The Denver Broncos run defense was arguably the most disappointing aspect of the entire team this last season. This past year, the Denver run defense went from a dominant 3.3 yards per attempt and 83.6 yards per game in 2015 — both ranked 3rd best in the league — to 4.3 yards per attempt (ranked 18th), and a sorry 130.3 yards per game (ranked 28th).

While it is not fully fair to expect an historic defense to keep up their level of dominance on the ground after losing both Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan to free agency and Vance Walker to injury before the season even started, the step back the Denver defense took this past year needs to be shored up if they wish to return to the playoffs in 2017. One player who many hoped will fill in for Jackson last season — and going forward — is defensive lineman Adam Gotsis.

Adam Gotsis was selected by Elway and the Broncos with the last pick in the second round, thanks largely in part to Bill Kollar’s pounding the table for the kid. Despite a great frame and a decent get off, many considered the selection of Gotsis to be a reach, as he was raw.

He had limited football experience coming over recently from Australia, as well as coming off of an ACL injury. Despite these two factors, Gotsis was put into action and his results were as one would expect for a raw rookie defensive lineman coming off a pretty significant injury.

Let's examine Denver's Week 15 loss to the New England Patriots, where Gotsis saw a significant share of snaps.

On this play, Gotsis is lined up on the outside shoulder of the right tackle Marcus Cannon, with two tight ends inline. Closer to the time of the <a href="http://www.authentic49ersshop.com/shop-by-players-arik-armstead-jersey-c-1_7.html">Arik Armstead Jersey</a> snap, ILB Todd Davis comes down from the second level to line up directly over the right tackle, shading slightly towards the B gap and showing a blitz.

At the snap, Davis crashes into the right tackle, while also drawing the attention of Patriots right guard Shaq Mason. Gotsis' job is to stunt and rush the A gap between the RG and center. Doing so, he must allow Davis to first initiate contact with the RT, stick close to Davis’ rear, all while moving laterally and ‘boomeranging’ his way into the quarterback’s face.

Gotsis does a great job on this play, showing a decent burst out of his stance, maintaining his balance as he moves laterally and bursts into the backfield. Gotsis is just a tick too fast for the Patriots RG Mason, and able to get past him and apply pressure to the quarterback's face.

Gotsis does a good job staying low and keeping his balance as he moves laterally, wasting none of his movement as he moves up out of his stance to provide burst into the backfield. Tom Brady’s pass to running back James White falls harmlessly incomplete, thanks mainly to the interior pressure provided by Gotsis and his interior pressure.

This is something that happened far too often with Adam Gotsis last year, as well as many other Broncos defensive linemen. On this play, Gotsis is lined up over the B gap between the Patriots LT and LG, Nate Solder and fellow rookie Joe Thuney.

Gotsis fires off decently on this play again, showing an okay burst out of his stance for a nearly 300-pound defensive lineman. While Gotsis is attempting to shoot the B gap and make it in the backfield to find the ball and cause disruption, the Patriots lLG Thuney uncoils and uses Gotsis’ momentum to shove him into the turf.

Thuney then shows his intelligence and aggression by getting on top of Gotsis and pushing him back into the ground, ensuring Gotsis would have no chance to get back up and pursue the ball down the field. By immediately getting wrestled to the turf, Gotsis is quickly washed out of the play. Gotsis will need to continue to add power and strength to his core if the Broncos are going to improve on run defense next season.

On this 1st-&-20, the Patriots are looking to pick up some more yardage to give themselves a more manageable second down. Denver stays<a href="http://www.authenticbillsstore.com/shop-by-players-brandon-tate-jersey-c-1_5.html">http://www.authenticbillsstore.com/shop-by-players-brandon-tate-jersey-c-1_5.html</a>  in their base formation here with three defensive linemen and two outside linebackers, due to the potential run threat with LeGarrette Blount in the backfield, despite Brady being lined up in shotgun.

Gotsis is lined up over the B gap between the Patriots RT and RG. At the snap, Gotsis shows again marginal get off. Gotsis attempts to use his hands to try to disengage from the RG’s block attempt, while making himself ‘skinny’ through the B gap.

Unfortunately Gotsis comes up a little too high out of his stance and doesn’t use his hands well enough to keep the RG from engaging with Gotsis’ chest plate and controlling him at the point of attack. Having the advantage of leverage, the RG is then able to neutralize Gotsis and knock him backwards after initial contact.

With time in the pocket, Brady is able to find Julian Edelman down the right sideline for 15 yards, setting up a very manageable 2nd-&-5. Gotsis will need to work on staying low, as well as his hand technique and ability to swipe blockers hands off him, if he is going to improve as a pass rusher in one on one situations next season.

This is 1st-&-10 in the third quarter with the Broncos trailing the Patriots 13-3. Denver is still very much in this game, but they are going to need to get tough in the trenches and stop the run if they are going to give their offense a chance to get back on the field and tie the game.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, that does not happen and this play exemplifies why they weren’t able to slow the Patriots down. On this play Adam Gotsis is lined up over the B gap between the Patriots’ RT and RG. The Patriots are lined up with one tight end and one running back.

Before the snap, Tom Brady motions wide receiver Chris Hogan over next to the tight end. At snap, the Patriots LG pulls showing a power run play to the right side of the line. Gotsis is double-teamed and almost immediately loses ground against the RG and RT, opening up a lot of room for the lead blocking lLG and the trailing running back.

In multiple occasions on this game, Gotsis was faced with and struggled to anchor against double teams, being driven back multiple yards or planted into the turf. If Gotsis had been able to better hold his ground on this play, it could have caused a lot of disruption on the play and potentially stopped the Patriots running back right at the line of scrimmage. Another way to beat double teams is to be quicker and shoot the gap between the doubling offensive linemen, but Gotsis has not consistently shown the necessary burst to do that yet in the NFL.

This is my favorite Gotsis play in the entire game, despite not getting credit for a tackle. On a 2nd-&-7 situation, with the Patriots driving and the Broncos still down 13-3, Adam Gotsis shows the tools that should give the Broncos and fans hope that he can develop and take the next step in his career.

On this play, Gotsis is once again lined up over the B gap between the RG and RT. Gotsis fires off the snap with good balance and leverage and gets his hands into the RG’s chest plate to drive him slightly back. 

With Mason in Gotsis’ clutches, Gotsis keeps his eyes in the backfield and looks for the ball-carrier, diagnosing the direction the running back is supposed to run. Gotsis quickly interprets that the ball-carrier is running behind his fullback up the middle on a draw, disengages from the RT, and shows excellent lateral agility and length to get his hands on the running back, helping the Denver front seven hold the running back for just one yard.

Gotsis shows it all on this play, with a strong get off, good leverage and balance, proper hand technique, quick possessing speed, and quality agility to help slow down the Patriots rushing attack on this play.

Conclusion

This is just a snapshot of a single game’s analysis of what Gotsis offers the Denver defense going forward. From watching the tape, it is easy to see what Bill Kollar loved so much about the kid when watching his college tape at Georgia Tech.

Adam Gotsis has a fantastic frame with strong motor and above average athleticism for a man his size. However, also from watching the tape, it is easy to see that Gotsis needs to continue to add strength to his core and lower half in order to better anchor against double teams and not get knocked off the line of scrimmage.

Gotsis also needs to continue to work on maintaining balance and leverage off the snap while using proper hand technique to disengage from blocker. He does not display incredible explosion in his play.

But if he listens to Kollar’s advice, who recently told Gotsis he needs to hit the weight room hard to get bigger and stronger in order to have a better<a href="http://www.authenticsaintsshop.com/shop-by-players-brandon-coleman-jersey-c-1_7.html">http://www.authenticsaintsshop.com/shop-by-players-brandon-coleman-jersey-c-1_7.html</a>  impact on the line next season, then one should expect Gotsis to develop into a quality starting NFL defensive lineman and help improve the Broncos woeful defensive line play from last season.

That’s a lot of coaching jobs and defensive backs Elliott has overseen.

So it ought to mean something that Husker junior safety Aaron Williams sticks out — in a good way — to Elliott. Williams is apparently that sharp needle in a haystack of helmets and shoulder pads.

“Aaron Williams is as smart a player as I’ve ever been around,” Elliott told reporters Tuesday. “He’s grasping things that I never dreamed that a safety could grasp this quickly.”

That’s not necessarily surprising — Williams finished with 62 tackles and three interceptions last season and started as a true freshman in NU’s season opener — but, for a Husker team learning its third defense in four years, it’s important that at least one player — preferably a safety — knows the ins and outs of the scheme <a href="http://www.officialchargesshop.com/shop-by-players-antonio-gates-jersey-c-1_3.html">Antonio Gates Jersey</a> quickly. If former Nebraska defensive coordinator Mark Banker and former Husker safety Nate Gerry never quite seemed to be on the same page, Williams, Elliott and new defensive coordinator Bob Diaco appear to be.

Elliott said Williams is good at “conceptualizing” the defense rather than memorizing assignments. The former is better because it helps with adjustments and teaching other players where they need to be.

And Williams, who played nickel and safety last season for NU, can do those things, Elliott said.

“He’s our quarterback on defense,” Elliott said.

Williams is essentially the replacement for Gerry, a third-team All-American who exhausted his eligibility and is waiting to see if he gets picked in the 2017 NFL draft. Beside Williams, it appears to be a two-man race between junior Antonio Reed and senior Kieron Williams. The latter started for much of last season — he led NU with five interceptions — before Reed got the starting nod in the Music City Bowl.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Reed is big enough to play linebacker but quick enough to be at safety; that’s part of the reason he’s with the first team right now. The other is he’s healthy; Reed missed last spring camp recovering from shoulder surgery, then spent part of last season getting into optimum playing shape. In the bowl game, Reed started but left the game with a undisclosed medical issue in the first half.

Elliott said he’s been working with Reed on being consistent. “If his body doesn’t lie — if he’s not out of control — then he should be a physical player,” Elliott said. “And I like that about him. He’s got good range, good speed.”

Kieron Williams has “great movement skills,” Elliott said. “He has been really outstanding.”

Williams was a part of several big moments last season, including a last-second swat of the ball in the win over Oregon, a pick-six against Wyoming and a dramatic late-game interception — that Aaron Williams helped set up — against Minnesota.

Elliott isn’t opposed to playing more than two guys at safety if they earn the chance. Neither is Diaco, a longtime coaching colleague and friend of Elliott’s.

“Bob’s been big on that over the years,” Elliott said. “If there’s no drop-off, then we’re going to play guys. We’re going to play as many as we can if there’s no drop-off. It’s their job to make sure there’s no drop-off. Even if there’s a small drop-off, maybe we’d play one of them more than the other, but I’m not opposed to playing multiple guys.”

Other safeties include JoJo Domann, Tony Butler <a href="http://www.authenticcowboysstore.com/shop-by-players-andrew-gachkar-jersey-c-2_62.html">http://www.authenticcowboysstore.com/shop-by-players-andrew-gachkar-jersey-c-2_62.html</a> and Marquel Dismuke. Previous general manager, Trent Baalke, decided to overlook their glaring need at the position last offseason. He didn’t draft a wide receiver until the sixth round with Aaron Burbridge. He also didn’t sign a big name at the position until right before the season started when they added their unexpected receiving leader, Jeremy Kerley. On the other hand, tight ends Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek combined for an impressive 741 yards and seven touchdowns. The two aren’t by any means at the top of the league at their position, but they are certainly one of the strengths of the team. I expect them to improve in an enhanced Kyle Shanahan offense.

The 49ers could be without two of their top three wide receivers from the 2016 season. They released Torrey Smith and have not yet re-signed Quinton Patton or Rod Streater opening up addition salary cap space for incoming players. However, they will keep the highly under-appreciated receiver Jeremy Kerley who led the 49ers in receiving yards and receptions. Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin, who marked two of Kyle Shanahan’s first big acquisitions, will join Kerley and the other wide receivers. Pierre <a href="http://www.authenticbillsstore.com/shop-by-players-adolphus-washington-jersey-c-1_3.html">Adolphus Washington Jersey</a> Garcon looks to help improve the 49ers’ league worst passing offense that averaged just 181.9 yards per game. Goodwin is coming off of his best season with the Buffalo Bills where he had 431 yards and three touchdowns. He is still a young player with room to grow and should help fill the deep threat hole left by Torrey Smith. The rest of the wide receiver depth chart is generally young and unproven.

The tight end situation should look very similar to last season but with a bit more experience. Breakout performer Vance McDonald earned a nice bump in salary as he led the 49ers in receiving touchdowns with four, all of which seemed so important on a team that really struggled to score through the air. He is now the seventh highest paid player on the roster. Garrett Celek will also remain on the team who had the third most<a href="http://www.authenticbroncosshop.com/shop-by-players-adam-gotsis-jersey-c-1_39.html">http://www.authenticbroncosshop.com/shop-by-players-adam-gotsis-jersey-c-1_39.html</a>  receptions and fourth most yards among receivers. Blake Bell will look to grow in his second year and backup Logan Paulsen was added in free agency as insurance.

The receiving core seems improved from last year, which isn’t saying much. However, I expect the 49ers to add a playmaking receiver as early as the second round in the upcoming draft. There is no receiver truly worth selecting at second overall so unless they wanted to trade down, which general manger John Lynch has said he is open to, the 49ers will likely wait until the early second round to add another weapon for Brian Hoyer. Top wide receivers John Ross (Washington) or Mike Williams (Clemson) could very possibly fall to the early second round where San Francisco could snag them for a great pickup. If not Curtis Samuel (Ohio State) or Chris Godwin (Penn State) could be sneaky picks if chosen instead. The 49ers do not have a need for a tight end in the draft since signing Paulsen so there is little reason to believe that they might add one.
