. --?Mark James played in the Ryder Cup seven times and captained the European
side at Brookline in 1999. Here, the honorary life member of the European Tour
gives his views on the 41st edition of the contest in Minnesota.Lee Westwood had
a really bad time on Friday morning and there is a fair bit of pressure for him
now to play well when he next gets a chance. He didnt just lose in the foursomes
with Thomas Pieters, he looked unimpressive and out of sorts. I didnt see any
part of his game that looked good.As a pairing it didnt come off and they failed
to win a single hole, losing 5 and 4. But Lee was big enough to tell European
captain Darren Clarke that his form meant he didnt warrant a place in the team
in the afternoon, and that he wanted to hit some more on his own the next
morning. He put some work in with his coach, Pete Cowen, on the range on Friday
afternoon and he will have been stripping things back to basics with the hope of
playing on Saturday afternoon.Lees performance hasnt taken away any of the
question marks there were over him before this edition of the competition got
underway, thats for certain; the doubts there were about him being in a position
to play at his best here.Hes 43 years old and you do very well to play Ryder Cup
at that age. If this is to be his last one, he would want so badly to at least
go out winning a singles match and finishing with a win. That will be massively
important for him.So he will be telling himself its just one session -- anyone
can have a bad day and be good the next. Hes experienced enough to shut out all
the pressure and the stuff that goes on outside the Ryder Cup and concentrate on
playing well next time out.Its fair to say Lee would have had to be really
disappointed to drop out of two sessions, but it is a measure of what a team
player he is that he volunteered to do that for the good of the European
cause. For me, he doesnt need to prove anything as a Ryder Cup player after all
that he has done. Hes played in seven winning teams and this is his 10th
appearance in the competition. At least he will have taken something from the
positive mood there would have been in the European team room at the end of the
day. They will have been thinking they did really well to get back to 5-3. After
the 4-0 whitewash in the morning, coming back like that was incredible.A bad
afternoon would have meant the match was completely over for them. But Darren
[Clarke] gave them a good talking-to at lunchtime and they came out with renewed
vigour, and played some pretty good golf. There is everything to play for now but
Europe really have to keep the hammer down in the foursomes on Saturday. They
will have to be at their best against a very good American side because if the
U.S. are given an inch, they will take a couple of miles.Mark James was talking

. Barcelonas entertaining victory ensured the defending Spanish champions
retained their share of the league lead with Atletico Madrid two rounds ahead of
their meeting in the capital. Real Madrid needed a late goal by substitute Jese
Rodriguez to earn a 3-2 victory at Valencia to stay in third place and three
points behind its title rivals.

. Their 38th instalment is arguably their biggest fight card to date, including
three-title fights and a main event which was selected by the fans. The
promotion boasts 14-straight years of business and is operated by MFC president
Mark Pavelich, who is often overlooked in this country for the foundation hes
established for MMA in Canada. SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium -- Hes very fast, very
young and very confident. He races on the limit, upsets other drivers and cares
little when he does. Hes also great for Formula One.Max Verstappen may not be
winning many friends among other drivers -- especially those from Ferrari -- but
his aggressive, unapologetic, fearless driving is wonderfully entertaining for
fans. The 18-year-old Dutchman is the youngest to win a race and to start from
the front row of the grid, and hes also just what F1 needs in an era of fading
former champions.Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button are all in
their mid-30s. Although three-time champion Lewis Hamilton is clearly very much
on top of his game, and his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg is highly
competitive, both drivers are 31.Verstappens star factor drew more than 20,000
Dutch fans to the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend. Legions of orange-clad fans
queued at the entry gates. Dutch flags were dotted around the Spa grandstands. He
is refreshing for me. He is a young boy that I like a lot, Mercedes head of
motorsport Toto Wolff said. He comes in here, no fear, no respect. He puts the
elbow out and it reminds me of the great ones. It reminds me of Lewis and it
reminds me of Ayrton Senna.High praise indeed, from Wolff, who might have added
that Verstappen also has some of the brashness that typified seven-time F1
champion Michael Schumacher. Wolff has expressed regret that Mercedes was not
able to snap Verstappen up before Toro Rosso did last year. You can clearly see
that some guys around are starting to think twice how to overtake him, Wolff
said, before adding a note of caution about Verstappens high-risk driving. I
just fear that it might end up in the wall heavily one day. For me it is
refreshing, but it is danngerous.

In May, Verstappen drove brilliantly to win the Spanish GP on his Red Bull debut
-- joining from feeder team Toro Rosso after just four races of this season --
and he followed that up with three more podium finishes. At the Belgian GP, his
second place in qualifying set another record as the youngest driver ever to
start on a front row of the grid. His talent is unquestionable, but his attitude
is, and the feeling in F1 circles is that Verstappens tender age means he gets
away with things that other drivers do not.The FIA has not penalized him. The
only thing that happened was that he was given a hard time in the drivers
briefing, Wolff said. Maybe next time he will have an even harder time in the
driver briefing.Especially from Raikkonen and his Ferrari teammate Sebastian
Vettel.Raikkonen criticized him after last months Hungarian GP and again after
the Belgian GP.There was a high-profile tangle between Verstappen and both
Ferraris on the first turn on Sunday. Later in the race, Verstappen infuriated
Raikkonen with some aggressive blocking moves when the 36-year-old Finn tried to
get past him at high speed.Maybe it needs an accident before things get more
clear to everybody, Raikkonen said. Hopefully not because it can be bad for
somebody, and nobody wants to see something like that happen.Verstappen,
however, appears to care little for reputation, does not get pushed around, and
his vitriolic words match the intensity of his driving.Blaming Ferrari, he was
quoted as telling Dutch TV after Sundays race Im not going to let them past, Id
rather force them off the track, reportedly adding in the end Im the victim.
