DETROIT -- After homering off Justin Verlander for the third time this month, Baltimores J. C.J. Mosley Youth Jersey .J. Hardy was at a loss for words. "Speechless," he said. "I couldnt tell you how it happened or what happened. I feel like I just kind of blacked out -- and Im happy about it." Hardy and Adam Jones went deep against the Detroit ace, and Manny Machado added a double and two sparkling plays at third base to lead the Orioles to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night. Verlander (8-5) gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out five. Hardy homered twice off Verlander in Baltimores 10-3 loss to the Tigers on June 1, and he opened the scoring Tuesday with two-run shot to left in the fourth. "I always pride myself on going deep into games and I want to," Verlander said. "Its just this year it seems like I havent been executing, or there have been a lot of teams that have battled me really tough. But youve just got to turn the page." Jones added a three-run homer in the fifth. Zach Britton (1-1) pitched well for Baltimore after being called up earlier in the day to make this start, allowing a run and five hits in 5 1-3 innings. "He was crisp. He attacked the zone," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Thats a tough lineup for a left-hander to go through. There are not any breathing spots there at all." Four Baltimore relievers finished it off. Detroit put two on in the ninth for Miguel Cabrera, but the Triple Crown winner bounced into a game-ending double play on the first pitch from Jim Johnson, who got his 26th save in 30 chances. Matt Tuiasosopo homered for the Tigers. Machado hit his major league-leading 33rd double of the year and put on a nifty show with his glove, diving to his left to stop Brayan Penas groundball in the third and diving in the other direction to make a play on Torii Hunters grounder the following inning. Hardy had three hits and his homer put the Orioles ahead 2-0 in the fourth. Machado led off the following inning with a double, and after Nick Markakis walked, Jones hit an opposite-field homer to right off Verlander to make it 5-0. "We battled against him," Jones said. "Sometimes you get beat, and tonight, we beat him." Machado also hit a single in the sixth, and he leads the majors with 101 hits. Cabrera has 98 after hitting two singles, but he was thrown out trying to stretch one of them into a double. Tuiasosopos homer in the fifth made it 5-1, and Cabrera came to bat later that inning with two on and two out, but he grounded out. Verlanders ERA increased to 3.72. He struggled a bit in the middle of May but appeared to be back in form after throwing seven scoreless innings at Kansas City on June 12. He was unable to build on that outing. "Its been a battle so far, obviously. Youve got that stretch of three or four starts where it was pretty frustrating," Verlander said. "I feel like Ive been getting better and better and better. Thats not necessarily going to work toward a perfect game. Youre not going to get better every time. Theres ups and downs and peaks and valleys." Britton gave the Orioles exactly what they needed when he returned from the minors to make his second big league start of the year. Darren ODay got four outs in relief for Baltimore, but he also allowed an RBI single by Austin Jackson in the seventh. The Tigers then caught a break. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Hunter hit a grounder to Machado, who tried to tag Pena between second and third before throwing to second for a force. Pena was not called out, though, giving Detroit a first-and-third situation with one out. Baltimore manager Buck Showalter came out to argue, but the point became moot when Cabrera and Prince Fielder both fouled out to end the inning. NOTES: Michigan basketball coach John Beilein threw out a ceremonial first pitch. ... Machado made an error in the eighth, but it didnt lead to any Detroit runs. ... The Tigers agreed to terms with four draft picks from this year: RHP Corey Knebel, CF Connor Harrell, SS Steven Negron and RHP Chase Edwards. ... Baltimore LHP Brian Matusz retired Fielder to end the seventh with the only pitch he threw. ... Detroits Rick Porcello (4-3) takes the mound against Baltimores Chris Tillman (7-2) on Wednesday. CHICAGO -- A foul ball turned into a tiebreaking RBI single and the decisive run, leaving the Chicago White Sox thanking Omar Narvaez and instant replay.Narvaez came through in his fifth major league game after the replay challenge, and the White Sox beat Chris Tillman and the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Saturday night. Its what replay was meant to do, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Narvaez hit a popup to shallow left field off Mychal Givens. Third baseman Manny Machado tried to make an over-the-shoulder catch, but the ball dropped and umpire Mike Winters immediately ruled it foul.I think the umpire got blocked out a little bit by Machado, White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton said.Replays showed the ball hit the foul line . The question was if it hit Machados glove first and, if so, was his glove in fair or foul territory.Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the ball hit Machados glove.Doesnt matter where it hit the ground if it hit his glove, Showalter said. So, Im hoping they felt like they had a replay that was definitive enough that he touched it in fair territory, because we dont have one. Maybe theyve got one.It was ruled fair and pinch-runner J.B. Shuck was awarded home. Narvaez got a single and has hit safely in each of his first five big league games.Hes come up here out of necessity, but hes jumped up pretty quick through our system, Ventura said. His at-bats are the thing that are starting to impress everybody.Eaton added an eighth-inning solo home run, Nate Jones (5-2) got four outs and David Robertson worked around a walk the ninth for his 27th save.Tillman (14-4) allowed two singles to lead off the seventh before he was lifted, failing in his third try to get his 15th win.Not good. Not bad, said Tillman, charged with three runs and seven hits. Made a lot of good pitches when we needed to. A lot of hard contact, a lot of hard outs, both in the air and on the ground.Tyler Saldino also homered and Melky Cabrera added an RBI double for the White Sox, who won for the third time in 10 games.J.J. Hardy drove in both runs for thhe Orioles, who stayed percentage points ahead of Toronto atop the AL East. Ravens Hoodie. he White Sox went up 1-0 on consecutive doubles by Tim Anderson and Cabrera leading off the first. Saladinos liner to left on an 0-1 changeup in the third made it 2-0 as Tillman struggled with his command. The Orioles were unlucky in getting only one run in the fourth. Hardys liner to right-center would have scored two if it didnt bounce into the stands.White Sox starter Carlos Rodon, worked out of a first-inning jam with three strikeouts while hitting 100 mph on the radar gun.Rodon, who struck out five straight early, allowed Hardys sacrifice fly for an unearned run in the sixth aided by Andersons fielding error at shortstop on what could have been a double-play grounder.Rodon allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven in six innings. He extended his winless streak to nine starts but drew praise. He was really tough, Hardy said. I dont know if it was the shadows or what, but he has really good stuff.TRAINERS ROOMOrioles: LHP T.J.
