CHAPEL HILL, N.
Jung-ho Kang Jersey .C. -- This could be a
tricky spot on the schedule for North Carolina. The Tar Heels dropped out of the
Top 25 following a loss to one of their fiercest rivals, with the other one
looming next week on a short week. In between is a seemingly harmless visit from
a team from the Championship Subdivision.Except that the FCS team coming in for
Saturdays game -- The Citadel -- is one of only two undefeated teams at that
level, has already wrapped up the Southern Conference title and a year ago
knocked off a Power 5 program. The Citadels not going to come in here and feel
intimidated by any means, UNC coach Larry Fedora said. Theyll come in here
expecting to win a football game.North Carolina (7-3) doesnt have any time to
wallow after a 28-27 loss to Duke put its hopes for a second straight trip to
the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game in serious jeopardy, though
Virginia Techs loss to Georgia Tech two days later kept them alive. The Tar
Heels need to beat North Carolina State next Friday and have Virginia upset the
Hokies to earn a spot in the Orlando, Florida-based game. But thats next week.
Right now the priority is avoiding a slip-up against a lower-level opponent that
beat South Carolina last year and has already sewn up a spot in the FCS playoffs
that begin next week.Weve got our work cut out for us, no doubt, first-year
Citadel coach Brent Thompson said. Its always one of those things we look
forward to, an FBS school on an FCS schedule.---Some other things to know about
the Citadel-North Carolina game:RUNNING BULLDOGS: Its no secret how The Citadel
is going to try to win -- by controlling the clock with its triple-option
offense, which is similar to the one Georgia Tech uses. North Carolina, which
allows an ACC-worst 222 yards rushing per game, gave up 334 yards on the ground
to the Yellow Jackets but won the game 48-20. You hope theres enough carryover
with our guys that it will help because we only have a couple of days to get
ready, Fedora said.UNDER THE HOOD: North Carolina RB Elijah Hoods streak of
100-yard games ended last week when Duke held him to 75 yards on 13 carries,
though he led the team with 58 yards receiving. Fedora says there were too many
very basic things that we didnt do throughout that game which kept us from being
efficient and just didnt make the plays to put the ball in the end zone.NO
PICKS: North Carolinas defense has one of the more bizarre streaks in college
football: The Tar Heels are the only FBS team without an interception. They may
not get one this week, either, because The Citadel throws fewer than 10 passes
per game.KEEPING IT TIGHT: Both teams are used to playing close games. Seven of
The Citadels 10 games have been decided by 10 or fewer points, while the Tar
Heels have played four games decided by a total of 11 points. Their record is
3-1 in those games with the lone loss coming last week to Duke.---Follow Joedy

. -- Jaye Marie Green shot a 4-under 68 on Thursday to increase her lead to five
strokes after the second round of the LPGA Tours qualifying tournament.
PHILADELPHIA -- Chase Utley got curtain calls after each of his two home runs --
including a grand slam -- in his first game in Philadelphia since a trade last
season to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Those cheers came after fans greeted him with
a 1 1/2-minute ovation before he struck out leading off the game Tuesday
night.Utley was a six-time All-Star in 13 seasons as Philadelphias second
baseman, helping the team win five straight NL East titles and the 2008 World
Series. Fans showed their appreciation with a long cheer before he struck out in
the first inning at Citizens Bank Park.In the fifth, Utley hit a two-out solo
homer and raced around the bases in customary fashion. Fans clamored for a rare
curtain call by a visiting player, and Utley obliged to another standing
ovation. In the seventh, Utley hit a grand slam off Michael Mariot, and fans
again cheered him back out of the dugout. It was Utleys seventh career grand
slam. His first career hit was a grand slam at Veterans Stadium. We had a lot of
great times here at this stadium, Utley said prior to the game. I spent so much
time here, so many great memories. I cant really say enough about the support I
received. Obviously we had some great players and great coaches, but the fans
kind of took us to the next level.Utleys presence put a buzz in Philadelphias
ballpark during whats been a lackluster season. Fans applauded when he jogged to
the outfield for warmups, and he twice stopped to sign autographs between
conversations with fformer teammate Ryan Howard in center field.
Jeff Locke Jersey. There were signs
throughout the ballpark welcoming Utley back.As Utley hit leadoff wearing his
familiar No. 26, public address announcer Dan Baker introduced him to shouts and
applause, including from players on both teams. Utley doffed his helmet and
waved to the crowd, and when he tried to step to the plate, fans continued their
ovation. Plate umpire Ron Kulpa moved to clean home plate while Utley stepped
out again, touching his heart and raising his fist in appreciation.I truly
believe without their support and without them pushing us to be better, we would
not have had the team that we had, Utley said of the fans.Utley was traded last
Aug. 19 and never got a chance to acknowledge the fans because the trade wasnt
finalized until after the game that night.I didnt really have an opportunity to
say goodbye, Utley said. If I were to write up a script (last year), it would
have gone a bit differently. He departed the Phillies after playing 1,551 games,
compiling 1,623 hits, 142 homers and 916 RBI. Utley remains one of the most
beloved Philadelphia athletes ever for his talent, hustle and grit. There are so
many times Id meet a father with his son, or even a mother, who would praise the
way I played and would tell me they want their son to play that way, Utley said.
To me, thats a true compliment.
